Trump claims hostilities have ended in Iran in letter to congressional leaders | US-Israel war on Iran

0

Donald Trump said in a letter sent to congressional leaders on Friday that hostilities with Iran have “terminated”, suggesting that the 60-day deadline to seek approval from the legislative branch no longer applied.

Friday marks 60 days since the US president notified members of Congress that the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on 28 February. Under the War Powers Act of 1973, the president can deploy troops to respond to an “imminent threat” but must receive congressional approval within 60 days to continue military operations.

In the letter, dated 1 May, Trump said he initiated Operation Epic Fury against Iran and notified Congress on 28 February “consistent with my responsibility to protect Americans and United States interests at home and abroad, and in furtherance of United States national security and foreign policy interests”.

“On April 7, 2026, I ordered a 2-week ceasefire,” the letter, addressed to Republican House speaker Mike Johnson and Republican senator Chuck Grassley, the president pro tempore of the Senate, continues. “The ceasefire has since been extended. There has been no exchange of fire between United States Forces and Iran since April 7, 2026. The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated.”

The letter effectively waves off the 1 May legal deadline, which was already expected to lapse without intervention from Republican lawmakers, most of whom have been reluctant to challenge the president’s unilateral use of force.

As he departed the White House on Friday, Trump told reporters that he had no intention of seeking congressional approval for the military campaign because “it’s never been sought before” and suggested the War Powers Act was “totally unconstitutional”.

“Nobody’s ever asked for it before. It’s never been used before. Why should we be different?” he said.

Trump’s letter underscores an interpretation of the War Powers Act that is fiercely contested by legal scholars and Democrats, who have argued for weeks that the president’s war in Iran tramples the separation of powers between the three branches of government.

“That’s bullshit” the Senator minority leader, Chuck Schumer, said on X. “This is an illegal war and every day Republicans remain complicit and allow it to continue is another day lives are endangered, chaos erupts, and prices increase, all while Americans foot the bill.”

Jeanne Shaheen, the ranking member of the Senate armed services committee, said Trump’s declaration “doesn’t reflect the reality that tens of thousands of US service members in the region are still in harm’s way, that the administration continually threatens to escalate hostilities or that the strait of Hormuz remains closed and prices are skyrocketing at home”.

“President Trump entered this war without a strategy and without legal authorization and today’s announcement doesn’t change either fact,” Shaheen wrote.

On Friday, the ACLU sent a letter to the White House, expressing “profound concern” that the president was “carrying out an illegal war”.

“Even a quick reading of the short and clearly written War Powers Resolution makes clear that there is no pause button – and certainly no reset button – under the statute,” the ACLU letter states.

The letter comes one day after Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defense, put forward a similar argument in his testimony before the Senate armed services committee, on Thursday. In an exchange with the Democratic senator Tim Kaine, who has forced a vote on several ultimately unsuccessful war powers resolutions on the Iran war, Hegseth claimed that “the 60-day clock pauses or stops in a ceasefire”.

“I do not believe the statute would support that,” Kaine said, adding that Trump’s prosecution of the war raised “serious constitutional concerns”.

On Thursday, Senate Republicans again blocked a war powers resolution brought by Democrats aimed at ending the conflict in Iran.

“Even if you accept the premise that Trump’s war in Iran was responding to an imminent threat, which I certainly don’t, under the War Powers Act he has no authority to continue this war past 60 days,” Adam Schiff, a California Democratic senator who brought the latest war powers resolution, said in a statement after the failed vote on Thursday.

Though Trump has previously claimed that the war would be over “very soon”, his letter made clear that the operation was very much ongoing.

“Despite the success of United States operations against the Iranian regime and continued efforts to secure a lasting peace, the threat posed by Iran to the United States and our Armed Forces remains significant,” Trump stated in the letter, adding that the Pentagon would continue to “update its force posture” across the region “as necessary and appropriate, to address Iranian and Iranian proxy forces’ threats”.

Major US city warns commuters about big crowds during specific summer events

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

If the daily commute to work this summer is already sparking dread, officials in a major metropolitan area have a blunt warning for folks in 2026: Stay home. Especially on certain days.

Leaders in both New York and New Jersey are warning commuters about serious travel congestion during World Cup matches this June and July. NJ Transit says only 40,000 round-trip tickets from Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will be sold per game, significantly limiting capacity.

Cost may also be a concern. NJ Transit is expected to charge $150 for a round-trip train trip between Penn Station and the Meadowlands during the matches — instead of the usual fare of $12.90 — amounting to a massive temporary increase.

“If you are not attending one of the events, please, if possible, work from home — because the city will be incredibly congested and so will New Jersey,” Kathryn Garcia, Port Authority’s executive director, said at a recent news conference.

“I would also discourage anyone from taking a ride share,” she said.

“We are going to do a lot of outreach to people coming through our airport to make sure they know about illegal taxis, but it also is for those in the city — we encourage you to use public transit if you can,” Garcia added.

The advisory comes as transit officials brace for massive crowds — with MetLife Stadium hosting multiple matches, including the final.

“The back and forth is just going to be tough,” Garcia said.

What did Rahul Gandhi say?
Rahul Gandhi wrote on Facebook that the news of death of many people in the tragic boat accident in Narmada river in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh is extremely painful.
My deepest condolences to all the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this accident. I am with the affected families in this hour of grief. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. This accident raises serious questions on the safety protocols implemented on the river. This incident should be investigated impartially and strict guidelines should be issued to prevent such tragedies in future and strict action should be taken against the culprits. Such negligence at the cost of innocent lives is not acceptable under any circumstances.

Jeetu Patwari hit the mark
While tweeting this message, State Congress President Jitu Patwari has attacked the Mohan government. He wrote on X that 36 people died due to contaminated water in Indore, 26 innocent people became victims of poisonous drugs in Chhindwara, HIV infected blood was given to children in Satna, a newborn was gnawed to death by rats in the hospital of Indore, 9 people lost their lives in a cruise accident in Jabalpur. Patwari further wrote that so many deaths… tragedies one after the other… but no responsibility is fixed in the Mohan government, nor does anyone answer. The arrogance of 20 years of power is so dominant that every carelessness is suppressed and every pain is forgotten by making it news. Now accidents are not happening in Madhya Pradesh, innocent people are being killed continuously by the government.

Federal government accused of watering down proposal to protect Australia’s threatened species and ecosystems | Australian politics

0

Green groups have accused the Albanese government of watering down a proposal to protect threatened species and ecosystems.

National environmental standards were the key plank of reforms to Australia’s nature laws, passed by the parliament in November.

The government has been consulting on a draft standard for projects of national environmental significance, including endangered wildlife, world heritage areas and the great barrier reef.

Environmentalists have criticised the latest draft which they say removes the requirement for developments to meet specific environmental objectives.

Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email

Changes to the draft standard, released Thursday, would mean developers would be considered to have met the objectives if they follow certain processes or “principles” in their environmental assessments – rather than directly demonstrating the required environmental outcomes can be met.

The Wilderness Society said the changes undermined the intent of national standards, which was to reverse the decline of plants, animals and ecosystems.

“The draft standard is a step backwards and will not protect wildlife from extinction or stop the destruction of forests,” biodiversity policy and campaign manager, Melanie Audrey, said.

Audrey said the draft standard for matters of national environmental significance was “riddled with weak language, loopholes and fails to set clear red lines to protect nature”.

WWF-Australia said the latest version of the standard was weaker than the first draft released last year and further removed from the clear, measurable standards proposed by Graeme Samuel.

The former competition watchdog chair’s 2020 review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act found Australia’s laws had failed nature in part because they were too process-focused. The review recommended national standards that mandated measurable outcomes for the environment to turn the decline around.

Release of the draft standard comes in the same week that Anthony Albanese used a mining conference in Western Australia to announce $45m for state and territory governments to advance plans to allow them to make decisions on federal environmental assessments.

That change would in theory streamline environmental approvals by allowing states to decide whether projects meet the requirements of national nature laws, and they would assess those projects against the new national standards.

The federal environment minister, Murray Watt, said on Thursday the government would release more proposed standards in coming weeks and hoped to have the first set finalised by mid-year. He said the draft for matters of national environmental significance “set clear and enforceable expectations around impacts to our most precious species, habitats and heritage places”.

But the Australian Conservation Foundation said their early concerns that the standard did not “raise the bar for nature” were heightened with the latest iteration.

“As now proposed, the legal test for consistency with the standard will be met if a developer merely confirms they complied with some principles and followed certain processes,” national biodiversity policy officer Brendan Sydes said.

“There’s no requirement for these processes to actually deliver the outcomes and objectives expressed in the standard.”

Policy and innovation lead at the Biodiversity Council, Lis Ashby, said Australia’s populations of threatened species had declined, on average, by 50% over the past two decades.

“This isn’t going to address that at all,” she said.

“Watt said his government’s commitment to addressing extinctions requires law reform that shifts the dial in favour of the environment – this is not doing that.

“It’s giving people a gold star for effort even if the outcomes are terrible.”

Watt told Sky News on Friday the standards would lead to “more clarity about what kind of requirements there will be in order to get an environmental approval, rather than sort of choose-your-own-adventure approach that we have at the moment”.

Ethanol Export: India will soon export ethanol to neighboring countries, talks started with Nepal – India-ethanol-export-nepal-talks-energy-cooperation-saarc-foreign-policy

0

India is now preparing to expand its energy power to South Asian countries (SAARC). Grains Ethanol Manufacturers Association (GEMA) President CK Jain said that India is discussing to export ethanol to Nepal. Recently a delegation visited Nepal, where it has been suggested to introduce 10% ethanol blending.

Jain said that at present there is a ban on export of 1G ethanol, but considering the demand of neighboring countries, the government can consider it. This will not only strengthen the rural economy but will also increase the income of farmers. According to him, the current E20 target is resulting in savings of Rs 40,000 crore, which can be taken up to Rs 1 lakh crore by moving to higher blending levels like E85 and E100.

On flex-fuel engines, he said talks were ongoing between the government and SIAM. These vehicles may be seen on the roads in the next 2-3 years. However, he acknowledged that there is consumer confusion about mileage, while the environmental and foreign exchange benefits are far greater.

College baseball game delayed after umpire takes a scary foul ball straight to the mask

There was a scary moment during Friday’s college baseball game between Vanderbilt and Alabama when the umpire took a blistering foul tip straight to the head.

This was the second game of the two SEC teams’ series at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa, and in the bottom of the second inning, Alabama was already up 3-0.

Alabama’s Brennan Holt took a swing at the 1-0 offering and got a piece of it, but that sent it straight into the face of umpire Scott Kennedy, and he went down hard.

According to The Tennessean, trainers from both teams rushed out to assist Kennedy, and that caused a 15-minute delay in the game.

Fortunately, he was eventually able to walk off the field under his own power and was replaced by one of the other umpires behind the plate.

After the game — which the Crimson Tide won handily, 5-0 — Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn sent his best to Kennedy and said that he had heard from his team’s trainers that he was going to be all right.

Man, this is just one of those reminders that being a home plate umpire is no joke.

Believe me, I like goofing on them when they mess up as much as the next guy, especially in MLB’s ABS era, but it takes some serious stones to get behind the plate.

Most of us would have no problem getting behind the plate for a Little League game, but once you get to the high school, college and pro ranks, the number of volunteers would likely start to shrink.

I don’t think I’d want to stand back there, not with how hard pitchers can throw and how hard batters can swing.

So hopefully things are going to be OK for Scott Kennedy because, man, that was scary.

Bob Odenkirk slams ‘manosphere comedy’ as shallow and on the decline

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Bob Odenkirk criticized what he described as “manosphere comedy” as shallow and declining during a Saturday interview, where the actor addressed trends in modern stand-up, performance and cultural commentary.

“It’s definitely about low-hanging fruit — big time,” Odenkirk said on “The Interview” podcast for The New York Times. “It’s like literally on the ground. It’s fruit that’s on the ground rotting.”

The “Better Call Saul” star made the remarks when asked what today’s comedy landscape is reacting against, pointing to a wave of internet-driven, male-focused humor that gained traction in recent years.

“Manosphere comedy was the reactionary comedy movement of the last five years,” Odenkirk said.

“I don’t think it has a lot of depth to it,” Odenkirk said. “It’s a movement that I’m happy to see transforming into something else and disappearing or dissipating.”

He went further, suggesting that the style relies heavily on shock value rather than thoughtful material.

“It’s like literally on the ground rotting. Pick that s— up and eat it. Throw it at people,” Odenkirk said.

“It’s just going to be boring after a while,” he added. “It’s like, what? Let’s use the stage to be as crude as we can be.”

Odenkirk framed the issue as part of a broader misunderstanding about comedy itself, arguing that audiences often mistake performance for sincerity.

“If you want to say something honest, then you should get off a comedy stage,” Odenkirk said. “Everything you say is of construct. Everything.”

He added that part of the appeal comes from audiences reacting to blunt or abrasive delivery rather than deeper insight.

“Let’s use the stage to be as crude as we can be and as clumsy and oafish as we can be,” Odenkirk said.

He argued that comedians are often incorrectly treated as if they are speaking directly and sincerely when they are performing a role.

“You are not you. You are pretending to be a person named you,” Odenkirk said.

He added that the shift blurred the line between entertainment and genuine expression.

“That’s not right,” Odenkirk said. “If you really want people to understand it directly, you should get off that comedy stage and say it somewhere else.”

Odenkirk rose to prominence in the 1990s alternative comedy scene alongside David Cross before gaining mainstream recognition through “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.” In recent years, he transitioned into action roles, including the “Nobody” franchise and his upcoming film “Normal.”

Edu tech firm Instructure discloses cyber incident, probes impact

Instructure

Instructure, the company behind the widely used Canvas learning platform, has disclosed that it recently suffered a cybersecurity incident and is now investigating its impact.

The U.S.-based education technology company is best known for developing Canvas, a widely used learning management system that helps schools, universities, and organizations manage coursework, assignments, and online learning.

“Instructure recently experienced a cybersecurity incident perpetrated by a criminal threat actor. We are actively investigating this incident with the help of outside forensics experts,” reads a statement from Steve Proud, Chief Security Officer.

“We are working quickly to understand the extent of the incident and actively taking steps to minimize its impact. Maintaining your trust is our highest priority, and we are committed to transparency throughout this process.”

Instructure says that it will provide new information regarding its investigation as it becomes available.

Since May 1, some services, including Canvas Data 2 and Canvas Beta, have been under maintenance, with customers warned they may experience issues with tools that rely on API keys.

The company has not stated whether this maintenance is related to the security incident.

BleepingComputer contacted Instructure earlier today with questions about the incident, but has not received a response.

BleepingComputer previously published and retracted an earlier report about this incident after determining it was based on incorrect information from a prior disclosure.

Targeting education technology firms

Threat actors have increasingly targeted education technology firms due to the large amounts of personal information they hold on students and teachers.

In January 2025, educational software provider PowerSchool disclosed a breach in which a threat actor claimed to have stolen data belonging to 62 million students.

In September 2025, Instructure disclosed a separate breach resulting from a social engineering attack that allowed attackers to access data in its Salesforce instance. At the time, a threat actor known as ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the incident and listed the company on a data leak site.

Threat actors have also targeted Infinite Campus in similar campaigns, with claims of data theft from the company’s Salesforce environment.
