Bangladesh tightens security as it holds first election since 2024 uprising | Bangladesh Election 2026 News

Bangladesh is gearing up to hold its 13th general election, the first since the 2024 uprising that toppled longtime leader Sheikh Hasina’s “autocratic” regime and forced her into exile.

More than 157,000 police officers, backed by 100,000 soldiers and thousands of other security personnel deployed across the country, will guard Thursday’s vote, in which nearly 127 million people are entitled to cast their ballots.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by 60-year-old Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has emerged as the frontrunner in the polls.

Challenging the BNP and its allies is a broad 11-party coalition spearheaded by the Jamaat-e-Islami, which is seeking to expand its influence in national politics. The Islamist party was banned under Hasina but has gained influence since her ouster. The alliance also includes the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP), created by leaders of the 2024 uprising.

Along with the parliamentary election, a referendum on political reforms that include prime ministerial term limits, stronger checks on executive power, and other safeguards preventing parliamentary power consolidation is also being conducted.

Vulnerable to violence

Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Muhammad Sanaullah said in a news conference on Tuesday that security cameras have been installed in more than 90 percent of 299 constituencies. Voting in one of the 300 constituencies has been suspended due to the death of a candidate.

Separately, Bangladesh’s police chief, Baharul Alam, said on Tuesday that more than half of the country’s 42,000 polling stations were flagged as vulnerable to violence.

Alam said police had assessed that “more than 24,000 polling centres have been marked as either high-risk or moderately risky” for possible unrest, violence or ballot stuffing.

“The location of some centres is very remote, and there is intense competition and hostility among candidates and their supporters,” he said, adding that 1,300 police guns looted during the 2024 unrest have still not been recovered.

“In high-risk and moderately risky centres, police will carry out patrol duty with body-worn cameras for the first time.”

Police records show five people were killed and more than 600 were injured in political clashes during the campaign period from December 11 to February 9.

Rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra counted 158 people killed and more than 7,000 injured in political violence between August 2024 and December 2025.

Transparency International Bangladesh also raised concerns over the law-and-order situation, accusing parties of forming “mobs” and setting up roadblocks.

Alam said the police were determined to ensure the polls were peaceful, but said he accepted that distrust of his force remained.

“It is quite understandable why people do not trust the police,” he said. “Over the last 15 years, based on what we have delivered – in fact, for the last 150 years, our predecessors mostly beat people.”

Millions travel to hometowns

An interim administration, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has announced three days of public holidays, which started on Tuesday, for the election.

Thousands of people, including factory workers, were seen returning to their home constituencies, as there will be restrictions on public vehicles on the voting day.

Tabish Mahdi, a voter registered in a village in northern Rangpur district and working in the capital, Dhaka, said he could not manage a bus ticket despite several attempts.

“It seems people are so enthusiastic about this election as they couldn’t vote in the past election under the Sheikh Hasina regime, particularly like me,” he told the Anadolu news agency.

The election rush has caused traffic jams on some key highways connecting Dhaka and other parts of the country, local media reported.

Interactive_Bangladesh_elections_Feb_9_2026_First time voters

Of the nearly 127 million eligible voters, one-fourth are first-time voters who dominated the protests in July-August of 2024 and now want a change in the political and administrative culture.

Public expectation, therefore, is running high that the vote could help reset democratic norms after more than a decade of disputed elections and shrinking political space. The transition is being overseen by the Yunus-led administration, which has assured a fair vote.

In a televised address on Tuesday, Yunus urged citizens to cast their votes, aiming to break the 17-year “silence” of limited voting rights under the previous government led by Hasina.

“I am not merely requesting you. I am demanding it. Set fear aside and bring courage forward as you head to the polling stations. Your vote will not only elect a government. It will respond to 17 years of silence, challenge unrestrained fascism, reshape the nation, and prove that this country will never let the voices of its youth, women and resilient people be silenced again,” he said.

The “future structure and direction” of the state will be determined through the elections and the referendum on constitutional reforms, he said, warning of a tough response to attempts to disrupt voting or any election violence.

After Canada, indiscriminate firing in Thailand’s school, many people injured, shooters took teachers and students hostage

0

Shooters opened fire at a school in Thailand’s southern province of Songkhla this evening and took several students and teachers hostage. The local administration has confirmed this on social media. According to Reuters report, an unknown number of students and teachers are hostage in a school in Songkhla province. The incident took place at Patong Prathan Khiriwit School in Patong sub-district of Hat Yai district.

Many people injured in firing, trapped in school

According to local media in Thailand, the gunman entered the school and opened fire, injuring a teacher and taking him to the hospital. In some reports, many people including children are said to be injured, but the exact number of injured is not yet clear. Many students and teachers are still trapped inside the school and are unable to get out. Thung Lung police station has surrounded the school. Special Operations Unit and rescue team have reached the spot and are trying to control the situation.

According to Thairath News, the suspect has been identified as 18-year-old ‘Khem’. He has taken a female staff member hostage in the Public Relations Room on the first floor of the school. Some reports say that a Mathyom 5 (Grade 11) student has also been taken hostage. Police have sealed the area around the school and are trying to negotiate.

Firing during school holidays

The incident happened near school dismissal time, when students were going home. Main Taptim Yala Foundation was the first to give this information on Facebook. The local administration and police are keeping an eye on the situation. There is no news of any death yet, but the number of injured may increase. The rescue operation is ongoing and more updates may come in the coming hours. The Thai government and police have appealed to the people to remain calm and not believe in rumours.

There have been cases of gun violence in Thailand before, such as in 2022 when a former policeman killed 37 people, mostly children, at a day-care center. But this incident of hostage taking in school is very serious.

Butcher who cut her girlfriend in half and buried her in their Derby garden jailed for life | UK News

0

A butcher who murdered her girlfriend, cut her in half and buried her body under concrete in their garden has been jailed for life with a minimum of 21 years.

Anna Podedworna, from Poland, killed Izabela Zablocka with a horse figurine before wrapping her remains in bin bags in a “filthy, makeshift grave” in Normanton, Derby.

Ms Zablocka, 30, was reported missing after losing contact with family in 2010, Derby Crown Court heard.

Prosecutors said her killer finally “cracked” last year when a Polish journalist flew to the UK to interview her.

The mother-of-one’s remains were found in June under concrete in the garden of the house the couple shared after they moved from Poland together.

Jurors were told “considerable force” would have been needed to cut Ms Zablocka’s body in half and that electrical tape had been used to bind her legs together “like a chicken”.

At the time, Podedworna worked as a butcher at a factory in Scropton, Derbyshire, where she skinned, deboned and cut up turkey.

She told her trial she had killed her partner in self-defence.

“I was just terrified, I felt fear. I thought I will bury her. I took the decision I would bury her in the garden,” said 40-year-old Podedworna.

“I wanted to pick her up whole. I just did not have the strength to pick her up. I had an idea to cut her down. It seemed the only way… to cut her into two.”

The jury rejected her story and yesterday found her guilty of murder, preventing a lawful burial and perverting the course of justice.

Prince William refuses to protect ex-Prince Andrew amid Epstein scandal: experts

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Prince William refuses to protect his “despicable” uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, choosing instead to support the victims of Jeffrey Epstein with his wife by his side.

British royals expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital the future king of England sees silence as a serious threat to the monarchy and is ready to shatter the “never complain, never explain” tradition.

“Prince William, with the major influence of Princess Catherine, is modernizing the monarchy by clarifying their position — which is with the victims,” said Fordwich. “This demonstrates William’s moral authority. We can expect that he will not do anything to defend his despicable uncle.”

“Despite issuing a statement supporting victims before departing for Saudi Arabia, Prince William was still heckled,” Fordwich said.

“He is clearly the hardliner on reputational risk, viewing silence as both damning and dangerous for the monarchy. Notably, the statement he and Princess Catherine released was brief, direct, and avoided any mention of his despicable uncle’s name.”

On Feb. 9, a spokesperson for the Prince and Princess of Wales said the couple weredeeply concerned” by recent revelations in the newly released Epstein files.

“I can confirm the Prince and Princess have been deeply concerned by the continuing revelations, and their thoughts remain focused on the victims,” the spokesperson said.

The public statement comes amid renewed scrutiny surrounding Andrew, the former prince and Duke of York, who was stripped of his royal titles by King Charles III in October, and his relationship with Epstein.

The Department of Justice recently released more than 3 million records related to Epstein, including his personal emails. Andrew, 65, has claimed that he cut off all contact with the late convicted sex offender in 2010. However, documents indicate that the friendship continued.

“There is no way to completely shut down this nightmare,” Fordwich admitted. “They have already shifted Andrew out of the public spotlight, stripped him of his titles and patronages — all of which William wanted from the outset.

“He and Princess Catherine are aligned with the public disgust towards [his] behavior. Catherine’s background — not being born into the royal family — gives her a clear outsider’s perspective. She has been a strong moral force by William’s side, and the couple are completely united.”

“The isolation they have dealt Andrew is both physical and reputational,” Fordwich continued. “William is determined to lead from a moral perspective, not bound by loyalty to anything or anyone of a lower standard.”

“We are witnessing the early framework of his future reign,” Fordwich added.

British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox News Digital that Andrew’s damaging behavior has left the monarchy vulnerable and fueled public mistrust. William’s “worst nightmare” has become a reality, she claimed.

“If it were up to Prince William, he would have dealt with the Andrew fallout a long time ago,” said Chard. “He is furious with the negative impact on the royal family’s standing due to his uncle Andrew’s despicable behavior. He has no allegiance to his uncle.”

Sources previously told the Daily Mail that the decision to evict Andrew from his 30-room mansion sooner than the Easter deadline was made by William and King Charles on Feb. 1 after an “urgent discussion.” In the dead of night, Andrew was moved to temporary housing at Sandringham.

Public anger in Britain has been building for weeks, driven by a widespread belief that there was a deeper institutional failure, if not an outright cover-up,” Kinsey Schofield, host of YouTube’s “Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered,” explained to Fox News Digital. “That frustration has reached a tipping point.”

“William’s decision to speak now, and to do so squarely in defense of the victims, was both deliberate and necessary. It signaled leadership at a moment when continued silence risked being interpreted as indifference.

“There is very little appetite left within the royal family for Andrew. William is asserting himself as the architect of a stricter, more disciplined royal model.”

Still, Schofield emphasized that with William still waiting in the wings, he and his wife operate with limited authority.

“Constitutionally and hierarchically, William and Catherine cannot take direct action against Andrew,” she said. “What they can do, and are now clearly doing, is establish a firm distance and make it unmistakable that he no longer represents the values or future of the monarchy.”

But the stronger signal didn’t come from the couple, Schofield noted — it came from King Charles III, who issued “a more forceful statement” hours later.

“The king indicated that he would cooperate with law enforcement, if necessary,” said Schofield. “That escalation suggests the shift is being driven from the top, not solely by the next generation.”

The Thames Valley Police confirmed to Fox News Digital on Monday that an investigation was underway into claims Andrew shared confidential information about his trade envoy role with Epstein. Hours later, the monarch expressed “profound concern” about the latest allegations.

“The King has made clear, in words and through unprecedented actions, his profound concern at allegations which continue to come to light in respect of Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor’s conduct,” the palace said in a statement.

“While the specific claims in question are for Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor to address, if we are approached by Thames Valley Police, we stand ready to support them as you would expect.”

The ex-prince may have shared confidential information with Epstein between 2010 and 2011, according to the BBC.

Emails included in the files show Andrew sent details of his official trade envoy trips in Singapore, Vietnam, Shenzhen in China and Hong Kong to Epstein in 2010. Andrew forwarded reports sent by his then-assistant to Epstein after the trip, five minutes after receiving them, the outlet reported.

Fox News Digital reached out to Andrew’s attorney for comment. A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace previously told Fox News Digital they don’t answer for Andrew as he’s no longer a working royal.

Chard believes there’s no doubt William, like his father, would cooperate with law enforcement.

“Prince William can try and force his views, but he is not yet king,” said Chard. “What has been noted is that William undoubtedly takes a harder line than his father. He realizes that a zero-tolerance monarchy is essential and will preside during his reign. It is no good acting slowly to mounting pressure, as by then, the damage is done.”

Royal experts previously told Fox News Digital that when the king decided to strip his disgraced brother of his royal titles, he had a key ally — the Princess of Wales.

“Kate Middleton is obviously a power behind the throne, supporting King Charles and Prince William in saving and securing the future of the royal family and her own determined destiny to become queen,” said royal expert Ian Pelham Turner.

“She is determined to create the right image constantly. I believe there was not much love lost between her and Andrew, who allegedly spoke shamelessly about her to William, creating an angry confrontation between uncle and nephew to a point where Andrew’s fate was sealed.”

IT stocks drag as Nifty posts fourth consecutive gain amid choppy trade

0

Benchmark indices concluded a lackluster Wednesday session with marginal gains, as selling pressure in information technology stocks offset strong buying in the banking, auto and healthcare counters, with the Nifty extending its winning streak to a fourth consecutive session despite trading in a narrow range.

The Nifty rose 18.70 points or 0.07 per cent to close at 25,953.85, while the BSE Sensex slipped 40.28 points or 0.05 per cent to settle at 84,233.64. The session was marked by choppy price action, with the Nifty oscillating within the 25,870-26,010 band and the 26,000 level continuing to act as a supply zone.

Eicher Motors emerged as the top gainer on the Nifty, surging 6.45 per cent to ₹7,766.50, followed by Apollo Hospitals which jumped 3.98 per cent to ₹7,506 and Max Healthcare which climbed 3.33 per cent to ₹1,055.50. State Bank of India advanced 3.23 per cent to ₹1,181.10, while Maruti Suzuki gained 1.89 per cent to ₹15,432.

On the losing side, TCS declined 2.53 per cent to ₹2,909, while Infosys fell 1.79 per cent to ₹1,471. Coal India shed 1.67 per cent to ₹423.75, HCL Technologies dropped 1.53 per cent to ₹1,549 and Tech Mahindra slipped 1.19 per cent to ₹1,625.10.

“Indian benchmark indices traded in a narrow and choppy range after opening on a positive note. Volatility remained contained, and the broader undertone continued to stay constructive,” said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money. “Steady domestic institutional participation, selective earnings-driven buying, and signs of stabilizing FII flows are providing structural support to the market.”

Sectoral trends were mixed, with Nifty Auto gaining 1.3 per cent, Nifty PSU Bank rising 1 per cent and Nifty Pharma advancing about 1 per cent. However, Nifty IT declined 1.8 per cent, emerging as the key drag on benchmark indices, while Nifty Private Bank slipped 0.2 per cent.

The broader market remained subdued, with the Nifty Midcap 100 inching up just 0.03 per cent to 60,754.55 and the Nifty Smallcap 100 rising 0.02 per cent to 17,455. Market breadth was slightly negative, with 1,971 stocks advancing against 2,248 declines on the BSE, where 4,383 stocks were traded.

Sudeep Shah, Head – Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, said, “Despite the muted move, the index showed resilience as bulls strongly defended the previous day’s low zone of 25910-25900. On the daily chart, Nifty formed a small-bodied candle with a lower wick, highlighting buying interest at lower levels.”

On the institutional front, foreign institutional investors remained marginal buyers with inflows of ₹69 crore, while domestic institutional investors provided strong support with net purchases of ₹1,174 crore. FIIs have now been buyers for three consecutive sessions, with cumulative purchases of over ₹4,250 crore.

The rupee declined 12 paise to close at 90.70 against the US dollar amid rising crude and precious metal prices. Gold traded firm with gains of ₹1,700 at ₹1,58,500 as participants positioned ahead of key US data on unemployment and non-farm payrolls this week.

Ajit Mishra, SVP Research at Religare Broking, noted, “Sentiment remained cautiously positive amid mixed cues. Investors reacted to favorable earnings announcements from select companies, but muted global signals capped momentum and prevented follow-through buying.”

Looking ahead, analysts expect the index to witness gradual consolidation with a positive bias. “A sustained breakout above 26,000 is essential to revive the bullish momentum. Such a move could open the path towards 26,100-26,300,” Ponmudi R said. Key global and domestic macro data due include US non-farm payrolls and the unemployment rate, followed by India CPI inflation, which is expected to set the tone for near-term market direction.

Microsoft Patches 59 Vulnerabilities Including Six Actively Exploited Zero-Days

0

Microsoft on Tuesday released security updates to address a set of 59 flaws across its software, including six vulnerabilities that it said have been exploited in the wild.

Of the 59 flaws, five are rated Critical, 52 are rated Important, and two are rated Moderate in severity. Twenty-five of the patched vulnerabilities have been classified as privilege escalation, followed by remote code execution (12), spoofing (7), information disclosure (6), security feature bypass (5), denial-of-service (3), and cross-site scripting (1).

It’s worth noting that the patches are in addition to three security flaws that Microsoft has addressed in its Edge browser since the release of the January 2026 Patch Tuesday update, including a Moderate vulnerability impacting the Edge browser for Android (CVE-2026-0391, CVSS score: 6.5) that could allow an unauthorized attacker to perform spoofing over a network by taking advantage of a “user interface misrepresentation of critical information.”

Topping the list of this month’s updates are six vulnerabilities that have been flagged as actively exploited –

  • CVE-2026-21510 (CVSS score: 8.8) – A protection mechanism failure in Windows Shell that allows an unauthorized attacker to bypass a security feature over a network.
  • CVE-2026-21513 (CVSS score: 8.8) – A protection mechanism failure in MSHTML Framework that allows an unauthorized attacker to bypass a security feature over a network.
  • CVE-2026-21514 (CVSS score: 7.8) – A reliance on untrusted inputs in a security decision in Microsoft Office Word that allows an unauthorized attacker to bypass a security feature locally.
  • CVE-2026-21519 (CVSS score: 7.8) – An access of resource using incompatible type (‘type confusion’) in the Desktop Window Manager that allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.
  • CVE-2026-21525 (CVSS score: 6.2) – A null pointer dereference in Windows Remote Access Connection Manager that allows an unauthorized attacker to deny service locally.
  • CVE-2026-21533 (CVSS score: 7.8) – An improper privilege management in Windows Remote Desktop that allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.

Microsoft’s own security teams and Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) have been credited with discovering and reporting the first three flaws, which have been listed as publicly known at the time of release. There are currently no details on how the vulnerabilities are being exploited, and if they were weaponized as part of the same campaign.

“CVE-2026-21513 is a security feature bypass vulnerability in the Microsoft MSHTML Framework, a core component used by Windows and multiple applications to render HTML content,” Jack Bicer, director of vulnerability research at Action1, said. “It is caused by a protection mechanism failure that allows attackers to bypass execution prompts when users interact with malicious files. A crafted file can silently bypass Windows security prompts and trigger dangerous actions with a single click.”

Satnam Narang, senior staff research engineer at Tenable, said CVE-2026-21513 and CVE-2026-21514 bear a “lot of similarities” to CVE-2026-21510, the main difference being that CVE-2026-21513 can also be exploited using an HTML file, while CVE-2026-21514 can only be exploited using a Microsoft Office file.

As for CVE-2026-21525, it’s linked to a zero-day that ACROS Security’s 0patch service said it discovered in December 2025 while investigating another related flaw in the same component (CVE-2025-59230).

“These [CVE-2026-21519 and CVE-2026-21533] are local privilege escalation vulnerabilities, which means an attacker must have already gained access to a vulnerable host,” Kev Breen, senior director of cyber threat research at Immersive, told The Hacker News via email. “This could occur through a malicious attachment, a remote code execution vulnerability, or lateral movement from another compromised system.”

“Once on the host, the attacker can use these escalation vulnerabilities to elevate privileges to SYSTEM. With this level of access, a threat actor could disable security tooling, deploy additional malware, or, in worst-case scenarios, access secrets or credentials that could lead to full domain compromise.”

The development has prompted the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to add all six vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, requiring Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies to apply the fixes by March 3, 2026.

The update also coincides with Microsoft rolling out updated Secure Boot certificates to replace the original 2011 certificates that will expire in late June 2026. The new certificates will be installed through the regular monthly Windows update process without any additional action.

“If a device does not receive the new Secure Boot certificates before the 2011 certificates expire, the PC will continue to function normally, and existing software will keep running,” the tech giant said. “However, the device will enter a degraded security state that limits its ability to receive future boot-level protections.”

“As new boot‑level vulnerabilities are discovered, affected systems become increasingly exposed because they can no longer install new mitigations. Over time, this may also lead to compatibility issues, as newer operating systems, firmware, hardware, or Secure Boot–dependent software may fail to load.”

In tandem, the company said it’s also strengthening default protections in Windows through two security initiatives, Windows Baseline Security Mode and User Transparency and Consent. The updates come under the purview of the Secure Future Initiative and Windows Resiliency Initiative.

“With Windows Baseline Security Mode, Windows will move toward operating with runtime integrity safeguards enabled by default,” it noted. “These safeguards ensure that only properly signed apps, services, and drivers are allowed to run, helping to protect the system from tampering or unauthorized changes.”

User Transparency and Consent, analogous to Apple macOS Transparency, Consent, and Control (TCC) framework, aims to introduce a consistent approach to handling security decisions. The operating system will prompt users when apps try to access sensitive resources, such as files, the camera, or the microphone, or when they attempt to install other unintended software.

“These prompts are designed to be clear and actionable, and you’ll always have the ability to review and change your choices later,” Logan Iyer, Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft, said. “Apps and AI agents will also be expected to meet higher transparency standards, giving both users and IT administrators better visibility into their behaviors.”

Iranians mark 47th Islamic revolution anniversary with nationwide rallies | Gallery News

Iranians have commemorated the 47th anniversary of the Islamic revolution with mass rallies nationwide.

Crowds flooded Tehran and other cities on Wednesday to celebrate the Islamic Republic’s establishment and show solidarity with the government during one of the most tumultuous periods in Iran’s recent history.

Demonstrators packed the streets carrying portraits of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Islamic Republic’s founder, along with Iranian and Palestinian flags. Many in attendance chanted, “Death to America!” and “Death to Israel!”

The commemorations prominently featured anti-American and anti-Israeli imagery, including the burning and trampling of both countries’ flags.

Iranian media showcased mock coffins draped with US flags bearing American military commanders’ names and photographs while also displaying Iranian missiles and fragments of downed Israeli drones from June’s 12-day conflict.

While the rallies were organised to show public support for the government, that backing is hardly unanimous. Demonstrations broke out at the end of December over the plummeting value of Iran’s currency, the rial, and high inflation. The protests spread across the country and evolved into antigovernment demonstrations before a deadly crackdown by security forces.
