A man has died from his injuries after being attacked by a great white shark in western Australia, authorities say.

Australia’s ABC News reported that the 38-year-old victim was taken by boat to Geordie Bay Jetty, where paramedics and police performed CPR. He died at the scene.
Images published by the outlet show ambulance and rescue crews gathered at the popular diving and fishing spot, Horseshoe Reef.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development told the AFP news agency that the shark measured four metres (13 feet) and confirmed it was a long great white.
The attack marked the first fatal shark attack in Western Australia since last March, when a man was mauled while surfing at Wharton Beach in a remote area.
A string of attacks along the country’s eastern coast earlier this year triggered the closure of several New South Wales beaches.
Last September, a rare fatal attack unfolded off a Sydney beach, killing an experienced surfer in his 50s.
The most recent deadly mauling in Sydney before that was in 2022, when a 35-year-old British diving instructor became the first person to be killed in an attack off the city in nearly 60 years.
The majority of shark attacks occur along the east and southeast seaboard of Australia, with an average of 20 such incidents a year, according to Australia’s Institute of Health and Welfare.

CBSE 12th Digital Evaluation: This year CBSE has implemented Digital Marking System (On-Screen Marking – OSM) for the evaluation of class 12th answer sheets, in which teachers scan the copies and evaluate them on the computer. There is a lot of resentment and debate being seen on social media between students and parents regarding this new system.
However, the board has given clarification considering the concerns of students regarding the on-screen marking (OSM) system. The board issued a notice on its official social media handle on May 15 saying that the OSM (On-Screen Marking) system is completely fair, transparent and gives marks in an uniform manner. CBSE has said that if students are not satisfied with the CBSE 12th Result 2026, they can apply for revaluation.
CBSE’s Commitment to Fair, Transparent and Equitable Evaluation

On February 25, 2022, just one day after Moscow’s troops launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the EBU banned Russia, stating that allowing it to be represented “would bring the competition into disrepute”.
Critics have decried what they see as a double standard given Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.
The EBU says it is a competition between broadcasters and argues that, unlike Russia’s state broadcasters, Israeli broadcaster Kan is resisting the government’s efforts to privatise or shut it down, thereby positioning it as somewhat independent of the state.
It is a position that Goracak disagrees with, pointing out that it was Netanyahu’s goverment that established Kan after shutting down its predecessor, the Israel Broadcasting Authority.
Eurovision Song Contest attendees can bring and display flags of all participating countries, including Israel, as well as rainbow and pride flags, but Palestinian flags and pro-Palestinian symbols are banned at the show.
It is these double standards that Palestinians, who have faced cultural genocide since the Nakba – the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948 – and subsequent decades of cultural appropriation by Israel, have grown used to, Eleni Mustaklem, public relations and fundraising officer at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, told Al Jazeera.
“It’s still OK for the state perpetrating this genocide to be represented … interviews with the singer [Noam Bettan] where he talks about the love of his family … while at the same time, whole families have been wiped out and the families that are still living inside Gaza with their traumatised loved ones barely making it through this catastrophe; it’s enraging, unfair and so unjust,” she said.
The hypocrisy of a genocide having been broadcast live on the news and social media platforms for more than two years and a sense that so much of the world turned its back on it, only to tune in to see Israel’s performance broadcast on those same screens is “painful” to witness, Mustaklem said.
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has warned Pakistan in a very strict tone. He said that if Pakistan continues to harbor terrorists and hatch conspiracies against India, it will have to take a big decision. Pakistan will have to decide whether it wants to remain on the world map (geography) in future or just remain a part of history.
What did the Army Chief say?
General Dwivedi said this during a dialogue session organized at Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi. He was asked the question that if situations like last year’s Operation Sindoor reoccur, what would be the reaction of the Indian Army. In response to this he gave this direct and strong message to Pakistan. The Army Chief simply said, ‘If Pakistan continues to harbor terrorists and work against India, then it will have to decide whether it wants to be a part of geography or history.’
Army Chief reiterated India’s tough stance
This statement has come at a time when the country and the Indian Army are celebrating the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor. This brief comment of General Dwivedi is a big warning for Pakistan. He has once again reiterated India’s strong stance against terrorism.
Let us tell you that Operation Sindoor was started on May 7 last year. This operation was started in response to the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam. During this period, the Indian Army had carried out precise attacks on terrorist targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). After this, Pakistan also tried to attack against India. Which failed. India gave a befitting reply to all those attacks.
This military conflict between the two nuclear-armed countries lasted for about 88 hours. The conflict stopped after a mutual understanding was reached between the two sides on the evening of 10 May. This latest statement by the Army Chief has made it clear that India is fully committed to its security.

Ollie Watkins scored twice as Aston Villa eased to a 4-2 Premier League victory over Liverpool to seal Champions League qualification for next season and leave their visitors looking over their shoulder at the chasing pack.
The win on Friday moves Villa into fourth place with 62 points from their 37 games, leapfrogging their opponents, who have 59 points from the same number of matches.

Liverpool remain vulnerable to being caught by both Bournemouth and Brighton in the race for a Champions League place as they slipped to a 12th defeat of the season with a single point from the last nine available.
Morgan Rogers gave Villa a first-half lead before Virgil van Dijk equalised for Liverpool early in the second period and then got another in added time.
But Watkins’ double and a brilliant late fourth from John McGinn sealed the win for Unai Emery’s side, who head into Wednesday’s Europa League final against Freiburg in buoyant mood.
“We had to get over the line,” McGinn told Sky Sports. It allows us to be excited and enjoy Wednesday properly.
“[Watkins] was obviously disappointed in March [being left out of the England squad] but if it gave him a kick up the backside, he’s certainly responded in the best way.
“We’re so fortunate to have him, what he’s done for this club the past few seasons has been incredible. Hopefully, he can carry that into next week.”
Villa head to Istanbul to meet Freiburg with one of their major goals this season already achieved, and the chance to lift silverware to cap their campaign.
The hosts took the lead on 42 minutes against the run of play. Lucas Digne found Rogers in space on the left-hand side of the box and the forward curled it into the far corner.
Liverpool levelled on 52 minutes when Van Dijk headed home at the back post from Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick, before 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha struck the base of the post from the edge of the box.
But a slip from Szoboszlai presented Watkins with a second goal for the home side, and Emiliano Buendia struck the Liverpool post with a curling shot as Villa looked the more likely to score again.
And so it proved as Watkins netted his second via a rebound from close range.
McGinn curled in a beautiful shot to make it 4-1 on 89 minutes, before Van Dijk’s second headed goal brought some respectability to the scoreline.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he feels no added pressure after the defeat but admitted his side are conceding too many soft goals.
“It’s not about me, it’s about us being disappointed with the result,” Slot told the BBC. “I spoke yesterday on it [my future] and that’s enough.
“Our focus is on the Brentford game [next weekend] and making sure we earn the support of the fans by starting the game aggressive and well.”
Villa scored four times on Friday but might have had several more goals as they cut apart Liverpool’s defence.
“We have conceded a lot of goals this season, which you’d find hard to believe unless you live it and that’s what we did today,” he said.
“Villa were the better team and the game went away from us.”

The San Antonio Spurs have booked their ticket to the NBA Western Conference Finals with an emphatic 139-109 win over the Timberwolves, while the resilient Detroit Pistons stayed alive in the East by defeating Cleveland.
The Spurs arrived in Minnesota on Friday with a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven semifinals, and led throughout a victory that sets up a tantalising showdown series with the reigning champions and top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder.

It is the first time a revitalised San Antonio has reached the conference finals since 2017. While the Thunder are heavy favourites for another championship, the dangerous Spurs enjoyed a 4-1 record against Oklahoma City in the regular season.
Stephon Castle led Friday’s wire-to-wire win with 32 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 11-of-16 from the field, ably backed up by De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama, who added 21 and 19 apiece.
The win was vindication for French superstar Wembanyama, who was ejected from game four for smashing an elbow into the throat of Minnesota’s Naz Reid, and was predictably targeted by the Timberwolves for the rest of the series.
“I knew, obviously, what they were going to do … I felt like if I gave in to the physicality and the dirtiness, that would have helped them,” said Wembanyama.
“I knew I couldn’t go over the edge again. So, you know, I had to beat them by playing basketball.”

The Spurs got off to a fantastic start, tearing ahead in the first quarter, dominant in the paint and led by a rampant Castle.
Just when it was looking ugly for the Timberwolves, they fought back, their aggression spearheaded by Anthony Edwards.
But from a 74-61 halftime lead, the Spurs roared clear in the third quarter, successfully double-teaming Edwards to shut down Minnesota’s most potent threat.
By the end of the third quarter, San Antonio enjoyed an insurmountable 26-point lead, their 56 percent shooting accuracy far outstripping the opposition.
At a timeout with eight minutes remaining, a 25-point deficit on the board, and both teams preparing to send out their benches for the remaining minutes, Edwards walked over to pre-emptively congratulate the Spurs on their resounding win.
“The words ‘Conference Finals’ just seem surreal right now,” said Wembanyama, 22.
“It’s something I heard my whole life, and now we’re in it, it’s kind of unreal.”
Pistons take Cavs to game seven
Meanwhile, Cade Cunningham scored 21 points as Detroit staved off elimination with a 115-94 victory over the Cavaliers in their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
The top-seeded Pistons – trailing 3-2 in the best-of-seven series before Friday’s must-win game in Cleveland – produced a dazzling early onslaught to build a double-digit lead that proved the difference between the two sides.
Cleveland, who had been unbeaten at their Rocket Arena home this postseason, will now have to win on the road in Sunday’s decisive game seven in Detroit to advance.
Cunningham’s 21 points included five three-pointers, while at the defensive end, Detroit centre Jalen Duren delivered a dominant performance that included 11 rebounds, three blocks and a steal.

Cunningham was one of six Pistons players to finish in double figures, with Paul Reed adding 17 off the bench, and Duren and Daniss Jenkins scoring 15 points apiece.
“We’re just playing our brand of basketball, coming out competing, trying to execute our system to the best of our ability, and we’re together,” Cunningham said afterwards.
“We stick together through everything, so it’s a great win for us.”
James Harden led Cleveland’s scoring with 23 points while Donovan Mitchell was restricted to 18 points.
The Cavs started Friday’s game brightly, opening up a six-point lead in the first quarter before the Pistons started firing to take a grip on the contest.
A devastating 22-4 run by Detroit saw the visitors accelerate into a commanding 39-27 lead in the second quarter, and although Cleveland closed the gap to 54-51 at halftime, the Pistons regrouped impressively to snuff out the Cavs’ threat with a 30-19 third quarter.
That left Detroit leading by 14 points heading into the fourth, and the result was never in doubt, with the Pistons maintaining a double-digit lead to close out victory.

US and Nigerian forces carry out a joint operation against the commander, who was deemed a ‘global terrorist’ in 2023.
Published On 16 May 202616 May 2026
Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, alleged to be the second-in-command of ISIL (ISIS) globally, has been killed in an operation conducted by United States and Nigerian forces, President Donald Trump said.
“Brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Friday.

“Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, second in command of ISIS globally, thought he could hide in Africa, but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on what he was doing.”
Trump also thanked the Nigerian government for its partnership in the operation, but did not provide further details.
Al-Minuki had been under US sanctions since 2023 for his links to ISIL.
When announcing al-Minuki’s designation on the list of “global terrorists”, the US State Department described him as a Sahel-based ISIL senior leader and part of its General Directorate of Provinces, the group’s administrative body that provides “operational guidance and funding around the world”.
“With his removal, ISIS’s global operation is greatly diminished,” Trump said.
Previous strike
For months, Trump has accused Nigeria of not doing enough to stop armed groups from targeting Christians in the country’s northwest.
Abuja has denied the charge and said that fighters target both Muslim and Christian communities in the country.
On Christmas Day last year, US forces carried out an air strike in Sokoto State that targeted ISIL fighters operating in the region.
The US has since deployed hundreds of troops to Nigeria to provide technical support and intelligence sharing in the fight against armed groups.
The US forces are playing a strictly noncombat role, Nigeria has said.
