Colorado governor commutes prison sentence for election denier Tina Peters

0

Colorado Governor Jared Polis has commuted the prison sentence of Tina Peters, the former Mesa County election clerk who was sentenced last year to serve nine years in state prison for carrying out one of the most serious election-related data breaches in U.S. history.

Peters was arrested in 2021, accused of abusing her position as clerk to break into Mesa County election facilities under false pretenses, steal election and voting machine data and share them with allies of President Donald Trump in a quixotic quest to prove he won the 2020 presidential election.

Peters has served less than a year and a half of a nine-year prison sentence handed down last year by a judge after she was convicted of using another Mesa County resident’s identity to enter county election facilities, where she stole voting data from the 2020 election and shared it with Trump allies online.

Peters hoped the data would show that Trump actually won the state in 2020. It did not. Election and cybersecurity experts have said Peters’ actions were a serious breach of election data, while Mesa County officials say it has cost them millions of dollars to deal with the legal fallout while Peters ran for higher office in 2022.

In handing down her nine-year prison sentence, Judge Matthew Barrett called Peters a “charlatan” and deserved a longer punishment because “I’m convinced you’d do it all over again.”

But for months, Colorado’s Democratic Governor Jared Polis has hinted at pardoning or commuting her sentence,  claiming that it was overly harsh for her crimes.

Trump has attempted to pressure state officials to pardon or commute Peters’ sentence. Because Peters was convicted of state crimes, she could be freed by a federal pardon alone, though Trump tried that as well.

In the past, Polis has claimed that he would only grant clemency to Peters if she showed remorse for her crimes. However, Peters’ own community and neighbors in Mesa County testified at her sentencing hearing last year that she has been largely unrepentant even after she was arrested and charged.

A review of dozens of Polis pardons and commutations as Colorado Governor by Denver news affiliate KUSA shows that Polis has never previously pardoned or commuted the sentence of a prisoner who did not openly express remorse for their crimes. Polis claimed in an interview with the outlet that Peters expressed regret.

Polis’ office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Where is Dela Rosa? Philippine senator outmanoeuvres president in evading arrest | Philippines

0

The wanted man outran security agents, rallied protesters and even serenaded the media with a military hymn. Then, after a sudden exchange of gunfire, the Philippines’ most controversial lawmaker slipped out of the heavily guarded senate building in the middle of the night.

Senator Ronald dela Rosa, who is wanted by the international criminal court for crimes against humanity, is now nowhere to be seen.

The week’s shambolic events have not only prompted criticism of the country’s senate, where Duterte’s allies controversially shielded Dela Rosa from arrest, but also of the president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who appears outmanoeuvred.

Dela Rosa is wanted by the international criminal court for his role as the enforcer of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs”, in which thousands of people were killed. But the saga over his arrest is also underlined by a fierce power struggle between Marcos and Duterte’s daughter, the vice-president, Sara Duterte. They once campaigned together but relations quickly soured, reaching an all-time low last year when Marcos allowed her father to be arrested and transferred to the ICC. The 81-year-old leader is now imprisoned at The Hague, facing charges of crimes against humanity.

Both Marcos and Dela Rosa deny wrongdoing.

Dela Rosa, a tough-talking former head of the Philippine national police, had been in hiding for months after reports emerged of his looming arrest in November. He made a surprise appearance at the senate on Monday, turning up to back a successful bid by another staunch Duterte ally to become senate president.

It proved a risky move for Dela Rosa, who found himself theatrically racing through hallways and clambering up senate stairways when security agents chased him through the building. He outran the agents, however. Along with his allies he has, perhaps, outmanoeuvred Marcos politically, too. When Dela Rosa reached the senate chamber he was granted protective custody by the new senate president, Alan Peter Cayetano.

The concept of senate protection is deemed dubious by some experts, but paved the way for a three-day standoff with the authorities.

For the first night, he hunkered down at the office of fellow senator Jinggoy Estrada, he told Super Radyo DZBB. “His room was better, it also has more food,” said Dela Rosa, who is known by the nickname Bato, which translates as “rock”. He admitted he did not have much of an appetite, however.

Inside the senate, he kept himself busy – drumming up public support through Facebook live streams and media interviews.

He called on his “fellow men in uniform” to oppose his arrest, bellowing out the military hymn to awaiting media in front of a media scrum, and made an appeal to Marcos not to hand him over to the ICC, with tears in his eyes.

His announcement on Wednesday night that he faced imminent arrest led to a heavy security presence and protesters outside the senate. Inside the building, the media captured scenes of chaos as they tried to locate the senator. Some reporters gathered at a doorway, holding their mics up to the door to capture the sound of drilling, as passageways were apparently being sealed.

Gunshots fired at Philippine senate after senator’s two-day standoff with authorities – video

Then, gunshots were fired, forcing reporters to scramble for cover.

Dela Rosa fled hours later. GMA News reported he had told bodyguards he was nipping to the toilet, but instead fled through a fire exit and cruised off in an SUV with a fellow Duterte-aligned senator.

Some have questioned if the shooting and commotion were staged to allow Dela Rosa an escape. Cayetano has denied this. He claimed the senate was “under attack”, blaming the national bureau of investigations, which had originally tried to arrest Dela Rosa on Monday. However, it later emerged senate security fired first.

“I myself do not know what to make of it,” said the senator Vicente Sotto, who was ousted as senate president and replaced by Cayetano on Monday. “Some firearms shooting by the [senate security] at I don’t know what, when most of us should have been home. Then Bato escapes,” he said.

The Marcos government has said it will respect a supreme court decision on Wednesday, which gave the government 72 hours to comment on a petition filed by Dela Rosa challenging his arrest.

“I sense that Marcos Jr wants to be more careful at this point compared to when Duterte was arrested,” said Jean Encinas-Franco, a political science professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman. When Duterte was arrested, Marcos’s “approval and trust ratings suffered”, she said. He doesn’t want to risk the same happening again.

“However, what is coming out is that the government is weak and incompetent, given the bungled attempts to arrest Bato,” she added.

In contrast, Sara Duterte is performing well in surveys. Her allies’ grip on the senate has been tightened this week with Cayetano’s appointment – a helpful development given that she faces a looming impeachment trial.

Dela Rosa will no doubt be keeping an eye on its proceedings. He is relatively young and may not be able to elude justice for ever, said Sol Iglesias, an associate professor of political science at the University of the Philippines.

“However, if Sara Duterte is not convicted and wins the presidency in 2028, he can expect to be shielded for as long as his allies remain in power,” she added.

For now, his whereabouts remain a mystery.

Detroit Tigers broadcasters rip MLB replay after calls are overturned: ‘This is gonna get ugly in a hurry’

Tigers broadcaster Jason Benetti can’t believe what he’s witnessing from MLB‘s replay office.

Is someone drunk? Are the replay officials even looking at the footage that fans at home are watching? Benetti and Tigers color analyst Andy Dirks worked a game Thursday that featured two calls that ended up in the hands of officials that went in favor of the Mets, who won the game 9-4 for a three-game sweep.

“This is going to get ugly in a hurry,” Dirks said seconds after the home-plate umpire announced that the New York office overturned a 5th inning call. To be fair, the game got ugly in the top of the 4th when Tigers manager A.J. Hinch was kicked out of the game after getting into a screaming match with the ump over a call at third base.

The very next inning, Benetti and Dirks had seen enough. “I’ll tell you what, the Tigers have a good right to believe that something isn’t on their side right now, whether it’s the baseball gods or whatever,” Benetti added after Dirks’ comment. “The first one was ridiculous. The first one should have been safe. This one, I just don’t know that we’ve seen clear proof of anything.”

“If that one wasn’t clear proof at third, how do you have clear proof at first? I’m just beside myself with trying to understand what these rules mean and who’s got discretion of what,” Dirks fired back.

MLB maintains a page on its website where it shows multiple angles of replay challenges. Here’s the play in the 4th inning. Even the Mets booth says the Tigers runner was safe. New York replay officials didn’t see it that way. You make the call. Based on the extra footage provided by MLB, the 5th inning overturn appears to be the right call.

To Dirks’ point, how is the fifth-inning call any different from the fourth? Watch the videos and you tell me. What’s clear is that baseball now needs to find a way to determine a definitive angle. And show fans in real time. They shouldn’t have to visit MLB’s replay archive on a nightly basis.

Golden Knights, head coach John Torotella hit with major punishment after advancing to the conference final

The Vegas Golden Knights are on to the Western Conference Final, where they will face the Colorado Avalanche, but some news that broke on Friday is going to put quite the damper on the celebrations.

The NHL is taking away a draft pick at the upcoming draft, and head coach John Tortorella is going to have to cut one heck of a check.

The reason? Tortorella refused to talk to the media after Vegas’ 5-1 Game 6 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

John Tortorella

However, after the game, Tortorella did not take part in the post-series handshake line and refused to speak to the media. Only players Brett Howden and Mitch Marner appeared at the podium.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS REPORTEDLY BLOCK OILERS FROM INTERVIEWING THEIR FORMER HEAD COACH BRUCE CASSIDY

On Friday, the league levied some serious punishments.

“The National Hockey League announced today that, as a result of flagrant violations of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs Media Regulations following Game 6 of their Second Round series against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday, May 14, the Vegas Golden Knights will forfeit a second-round pick in the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft,” the league said in a statement. “In addition, Golden Knights head coach John Tortorella has been fined $100,000.”

The statement also notes that “these penalties come after previous warnings were issued to the Club regarding their compliance with the Media Regulations and other associated policies,” and the team has the option to appeal.

That doesn’t make the situation any less crazy, though.

Losing a draft pick and the coach having to cut a $100,000 check for not talking to the media? That seems virtually unprecedented.

Vegas declined to comment on the penalties after they were announced.

As for Tortorella’s reason for skipping the handshake and media obligations, he hasn’t given one.

However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the veteran bench boss who took over in Vegas with just eight games left in the regular season was mad about the suspension of defenseman Brayden McNabb.

McNabb was assessed a one-game suspension — which he served during Game 6 — after a controversial hit on Anaheim forward Ryan Poehling in Game 5.

We should hear from Tortorella before the Western Conference Final gets underway, so hopefully he’ll explain.

He’s not exactly the kind of coach who is afraid to speak his mind.

Hantavirus outbreak: Six passengers of the cruise ship quarantined in Australia for three weeks, how many deaths so far? – Hantavirus Outbreak Cruise Ship Passengers Quarantine In Australia How Many Deaths So Far Who Advisory News

0

A decision has been taken to quarantine six passengers of a cruise ship affected by Hantavirus. They were sent to Australia on Friday. These infected people, who will be kept in quarantine for at least three weeks, will not be allowed to meet anyone. The cruise ship on which the Hantavirus cases have been reported has been identified as the MV Hondius.

What did Australia’s Health Minister say?
Passengers quarantined due to Hantavirus were flown to Australia from the Netherlands on a Gulfstream business jet. The aircraft landed at RAAF Base Pearce outside Perth, Western Australia. Passengers, crew and a doctor were taken by bus to the Bullsbrook quarantine facility. Australian Health Minister Mark Butler said the government would implement one of the strongest quarantine responses in the world. He said that passengers returning from America and European countries will be kept in quarantine for a few days.

Five Australians and one New Zealand citizen are among the infected.
It is noteworthy that in view of the dangers associated with Hantavirus, Australia has taken a strict stance to prevent the risk of any spread of the virus. Five Australians and one New Zealand citizen will be kept in the quarantine center for three weeks. This center was constructed in the year 2022 during the Covid-19 pandemic.

What did WHO say on investigation and prevention?
What precautions should be taken to prevent Hantavirus? Regarding this, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the period of 42 days after the infection is confirmed is the most sensitive. No decision has been taken yet on what precautions need to be taken for the remaining period.

How is the situation in America?
The initial test reports of the six passengers who have been quarantined in Australia were negative. The results of the test for virus infection before leaving the Netherlands were negative. The doctor had assessed him during the flight itself. On the instructions of health officials in the US, two travelers have been sent to the National Quarantine Center in Omaha.

Virus outbreak on ship and three deaths
Kayla Thomas, spokeswoman for the US Department of Medicine in Nebraska, said the passengers brought to Omaha had been medically cleared to travel. Initially only one passenger on the ship was found positive, but his test report later came back negative. The cruise ship – MV Hondius was on a voyage from Argentina to the Antarctic and islands of the South Atlantic. The hantavirus outbreak came to light when 11 cases were reported on the ship. Three of these people also died. The ship is returning to the Netherlands after all passengers and crew were sent to quarantine in Australia.

Google reimburses Register sources who were victims of API fraud

0

Two of the Google Cloud developers who were hit with bills for thousands of dollars following unauthorized API calls to Gemini models have had their bills reversed, the users told The Register  in recent days. But Google plans to continue automatically expanding users’ spending limits, leaving them and countless other customers vulnerable to bills they cannot afford, whether from fraud or a sudden traffic surge.

Australia-based developer Isuru Fonseka – whose usage bill skyrocketed to $17,000 in minutes after Google automatically upgraded his $250 spending tier when a hacker took control of his account – told us that he was happy to put this behind him.

“It’s so good. It felt like they were just giving me the run around until your article. I just hope they fix it properly for everyone,” he said. “It’s great that the article was able to get the refund but it’s sad that it had to go to that level for them to process it urgently.”

Despite refunding his money, Google seems to have lost a customer. Fonseka said that he has since ensured his API cannot be used with Google’s stable of AI products, and will likely try one of the independent foundation models if he needs those features.

“I’ve disabled Gemini on everything – if I ever plan to use AI on my projects, I’m better off using it via a different service such as OpenRouter or going directly to one of the other LLM providers – just as a way to keep Gemini out of my account and the risk as low as possible,” he said.

Fonseka said he was blindsided by a Google policy that allowed the company to automatically upgrade a user’s billing tier without permission or adequate warning. He had thought by signing up for a user tier with a $250 spending cap that his bills would be restricted to that amount. It was only after attackers exploited his API key that he learned Google would upgrade the cap automatically based on his history of spending.

While Google acknowledged that the automatic tier upgrades allowed credential hijackers to rack up thousands of dollars in bills in cases like the one Fonseka described to The Register, it said it has not reconsidered the policy.

In a statement to The Register, Google said that it wants to prioritize access to Google Cloud services without interruption, preferring to prevent service outages over respecting users’ budget preferences.

“With our automated growth tiers, we helped businesses scale as usage increased, built on their historic reputation of payments and usage,” a Google spokesperson told us in a statement. “This prevents their business having a hard service outage once they pass an artificial system quota.”

Tiers vs spending caps

There is some confusion between Google’s usage tiers and its newly introduced spending caps, and Google’s documentation hasn’t helped much.

Google says its users can set their usage tiers not to exceed a certain spending level. For example the maximum spending allowed by a Tier 1 user like Fonseka is $250. However, if the account is older than 30 days and if, over the lifetime of their work with Google, they have spent at least $1,000, then Google will automatically allow that account to spend up to $100,000. So good customers have the most to fear from fraud or from an unexpected spike in usage.

In several cases shared on social media, Google users were only aware of this after their credit cards were billed thousands of dollars.

On April 22, Google introduced a trial of hard caps on spending within Google Cloud, but those are in a preview and are approved on a case-by-case basis.

“We’re excited to announce that Spend Caps are coming soon to Google Cloud. Designed to work with Google Cloud Budgets, FinOps and DevOps can set budgets that enforce automated cost boundaries (caps) at the project level for AIS, Agent Platform, Cloud Run, Cloud Run Functions, and Maps,” Google wrote. “These caps alert and ultimately pause API traffic once your set budget is reached, but leave your resources intact. If you need the traffic to resume, simply suspend the Spend Cap.”

Spend caps can only be set per project for a single, eligible service, Google said. Eligible services for this preview include Gemini API, Agent Platform (previously known as VertexAI), Cloud Run, Cloud Run Functions, Maps, Google said.

Users who apply for a spending cap will have their submissions reviewed on a “one to two week basis” and customers are added in the order they submitted.

“Once onboarded, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access the feature as well as details on how to submit feedback,” Google writes in its sign up page.

Rod Danan, CEO of Prentus, a company that helps job applicants with interview preparation and tracks job placements for universities, told The Register earlier this week that he saw his bill skyrocket to $10,000 in just 30 minutes of usage by attackers who exploited his public API key.

Google forgave the charges on Thursday, he said.

“They got back to me today agreeing to a refund,” he told us. “It’s definitely relieving. You want to focus on the business. You don’t want to have to focus on going and getting refunds from some crazy charges.”

He said the stress of running a startup is hard enough without the addition of fighting one of the largest companies in the world imposing erroneous five-figure charges.

“I’m happy that it’s behind me. I wish it was easier,” he said. “I’ve learned, yeah, definitely don’t give up. Be annoying whenever something is wrong and just keep pushing. Again, try to make it as public as possible, get louder and louder until the people you need to hear you actually hear you.”

Google said any unauthorized use of API keys will be investigated and it historically has treated customers compassionately when there is clear evidence of fraud or error.

“We take reports of credential abuse and the financial security of our customers extremely seriously; and as you know are investigating these specific cases you have pointed to and we will work directly with any impacted users to resolve charges resulting from fraudulent activity,” Google said. ®

Flex Fuel: Ethanol blending promoted in India, Tata Motors may soon launch Tata Punch flex fuel car – Tata Motors To Expand Punch Lineup With New E85 Flex Fuel Engine Soon As India Promotes Ethanol Blending

0

Cars running on flex fuel may soon become a reality in India. Tata Motors is set to become the first major carmakers to introduce a production-ready model compatible with high ethanol-blend fuel. According to industry reports, Tata Motors may launch a flex fuel version of Tata Punch by the end of this year. This compact SUV has also been showcased earlier in flex fuel form. Which reflects the company’s intention to enter this emerging alternative fuel segment.

What type of fuel will the new Tata Punch model support?

This upcoming model is being designed in line with the government policy of reducing the country’s fuel import bill:

  • E85 fuel support: This new Punch Flex Fuel model is expected to run on up to 85 percent ethanol-blended petrol, commonly known as E85.

  • Strategic Objective: The government is intensifying efforts to reduce India’s dependence on traditional fossil fuels and cut fuel import costs. In which this technology will be helpful.

What changes will there be in Punch’s flex fuel strategy and engine?

Tata Punch currently comes with several powertrain options. In which now a new option is going to be added:

  • Powertrain details: Tata Punch is already available in petrol and CNG options. The introduction of the flex fuel variant will further expand the fuel efficiency of this model.

  • Major changes in the engine: According to sources, significant changes will be made to the SUV’s 1.2-litre petrol engine to support the higher ethanol blend. These changes include updating the engine control unit (ECU) and other critical engine parts.

  • Special Engineering: Flex fuel vehicles are specifically designed to handle fuels with significantly higher ethanol concentrations. Whereas standard petrol cars are generally not designed to run on a mixture such as E85.

Why are flex fuel vehicles important for India?

This technology has several implications for the country’s energy and environmental goals:

  • Reduction in import bill: The government is strongly promoting ethanol blending as part of its strategy to reduce crude oil imports and cut the country’s fuel bill.

  • Clean Mobility: It is also being seen as a way to support clean mobility solutions using domestically produced biofuel.

  • Energy transition: Industry experts say flex fuel technology could play an important role in India’s long-term energy transition. Especially at a time when the country is balancing the growth of electric mobility with conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

What is the position among automakers regarding the flex fuel segment?

Competition is increasing in the market regarding this new technology:

  • Many companies in the race: Tata Motors is not the only company exploring flex fuel technology. Several carmakers have already showcased their flex fuel prototypes. And they are investing in research and development (R&D) in this segment.

  • Technical Barrier: Experts caution that widespread adoption of flex fuel will not be easy due to infrastructure requirements and the need for compatible engines. Normal gasoline vehicles cannot operate efficiently on higher ethanol blends such as E85 or E100 without major engineering changes. Which necessitates the development of dedicated flex fuel vehicles.
