While a potential ban on the tush push was debated last offseason, this year the Cleveland Browns have floated the most notable rule change.
The proposal seeks to allow NFL teams to agree to deals that would involve draft picks as far as five years in advance. Current league policy only permits teams to trade picks as far as three years into the future.
The NFL owners will consider the Browns’ proposal and a separate proposal from the Pittsburgh Steelers when they gather for league meetings before the end of the month.
The Steelers’ suggestion centers on how players are contacted once the free agent negotiating period opens.

Troy Vincent, the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations, said at last month’s scouting combine that no submitted proposals this year were about the tush push. However, the NFL’s competition committee will unveil its proposed rule changes next week.

The California State Legislature is taking steps to rename Cesar Chavez Day after a controversial report exposed sexual abuse allegations against the labor union activist.
Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas took to the Assembly floor on Thursday to recognize the “disturbing” and “painful” stories told by the women in Wednesday’s New York Times article.
“As someone who grew up in the farmworker movement, as a son and grandson of farmworkers who raised my brother and I, as a father and as a Latino, I am shocked, I am angry, and I am deeply, deeply disappointed,” Rivas said.

In solidarity with labor unions, Rivas announced that he was working with Senate President pro Tempore Monique Limón to introduce legislation to rename Cesar Chavez Day to Farmworkers Day.
“This moment calls for honesty, it calls for reflection, and it calls for a renewed commitment to the values that the farmworker movement was built on,” Rivas said. “This morning, today, we stand with survivors, and we must recommit ourselves to justice, to dignity and to the people who built the farmworker movement.”
Fox News Digital reached out to the California State Legislature for further comment.
22 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH, CESAR CHAVEZ TO GET NAVY FUNERAL HONORS
Cesar Chavez Day has been recognized as a formal holiday in California since 2000 to commemorate Chavez’s birthday on March 31. It is unclear at this time if the legislature will be able to pass legislation to rename the holiday before the end of the month.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., who has supported legislation in response to the New York Times report, encouraged Rivas’ proposal.
“The farmworkers’ movement was always bigger than just one man or one person. Given the horrendous allegations that were made public for the first time yesterday, this is a welcomed change. Thank you, @CASpeakerRivas and Senate President @MoniqueLimonCA, for your leadership,” Newsom wrote on X.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also announced during a press conference on Thursday that she has signed a proclamation recognizing Cesar Chavez Day as Farmworkers Day in her city.
“On behalf of the city of Los Angeles, I’m proud to introduce and sign a proclamation today to rename the last Monday of March as Farmworkers Day,” Bass said. “I also want to share that I’ve been in touch with the Chavez family, and they support our decision to rename this holiday. This March 30, and every last Monday of March moving forward will provide an opportunity for Angelenos to reflect on how the struggle of farmworkers has elevated working people everywhere.”

Several California Democratic politicians have released statements attempting to distance themselves from Chavez despite the party’s longtime support for the labor union activist.
The United States Commission of Fine Arts, a federal agency, has approved plans for a commemorative gold coin that features one of Donald Trump’s recent presidential portraits.
The commission, made up of Trump appointees, voted unanimously in favour of minting the coin on Thursday. But the legality of such efforts has been repeatedly questioned.
Federal law prohibits the depiction of living presidents on US currency. Thursday’s coin, however, may sidestep the rule, as it is intended as a commemorative item, not for circulation as currency.
Still, the Trump administration has advanced other plans to put the president’s face on a $1 coin, in addition to the commemorative gold coin.
Critics denounced both initiatives as unlawful and inappropriate for a sitting leader.
“Monarchs and dictators put their faces on coins, not leaders of a democracy,” Senator Jeff Merkley told the news agency Reuters.
The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, a bipartisan federal panel, has previously pushed back against efforts to mint Trump-themed coins.
One of its members, Donald Scarinci, said that the panel and the Commission of Fine Arts are both supposed to approve such designs.
“But we still fully expect them to plough ahead and mint both coins,” Scarinci said of the commission.
The gold coin is set to feature a bald eagle on one side, and Trump on the other, leaning with both fists on the table and staring straight ahead.
The image is a facsimile of a black-and-white image of Trump taken by photographer Daniel Torok and featured in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.
“I know it’s a very strong and a very tough image of him,” said Chamberlain Harris, a Trump aide who was appointed to arts commission earlier this year.

Harris indicated that the Trump gold coin would be as large as possible. The US Mint currently produces coins as large as 7.6 centimetres, or three inches, which is what Harris said the Trump administration would aim for.
“I think the larger the better. The largest of that circulation, I think, would be his preference,” Harris said, referencing her discussions with the president.
Megan Sullivan, the acting chief at the Office of Design Management at the US Mint, also indicated that Trump had given the design his approval.
“It is my understanding that the secretary of the Treasury presented this design, as well as others, to the president, and these were his selection,” Sullivan said.
Since taking office for a second term, Trump has pushed to leave his mark on the federal government.
In addition to the gold coin and $1 coin that are slated to bear his image, he has placed his name on the US Institute of Peace and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Both efforts are the subject of ongoing lawsuits. An act of Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, designating it as a living memorial to the late John F Kennedy, a president who was assassinated in office in 1963.
Likewise, the US Institute of Peace was established by Congress as an independent think tank dedicated to conflict resolution.
It was the subject of a standoff between its leadership and members of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last March, culminating in its employees being forcibly evicted.
Trump has also placed his face on government buildings around Washington, DC, in the form of long banners.
Even the architecture of the city is changing to reflect his tastes: Last October, he tore down the White House’s East Wing in order to build a massive ballroom, and he has plans to build a triumphal arch in the capital, similar to the one in Paris, France.
Trump has pitched many of the changes as part of the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations, which culminate this July.
At Thursday’s meeting to discuss the gold coin, his officials repeated the argument that celebrating Trump was a good way to mark the anniversary.
“I think it’s fitting to have a current sitting president who’s presiding over the country over the 250th year on a commemorative coin for said year,” said Harris.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Thursday he will sign an executive order to create an Office of Community Safety (OCS), a step toward his vision of public safety that prioritizes support and prevention rather than policing and penalization.
The office, housed within the mayor’s office, will oversee multiple existing public safety programs and signify a major step in building out Mamdani’s $1.1 billion Department of Community Safety.
The announcement comes after Mamdani pledged to revise the city’s police response in non-criminal emergencies, including mental health crises.
“For too long, we have approached crime and safety by placing only ever-expanding expectations on the police department, as we have asked them to address every failure of our social safety net,” Mamdani said during a news conference.
“Crime is one of the most complex issues we face, and yet our city’s approach for far too long has been to rely on a patchwork of programs to deal with interconnected problems.

“We must instead pursue a whole-of-government model, one where our strategies are centralized and implemented with coordination and at scale, and one which a deputy mayor oversees,” he continued. “This will demand a multifaceted approach to a wide array of challenges across the city.”
Mamdani said the OCS will centralize agencies, including the Office of Crime Victim Services, Office of Gun Violence Prevention, Office to End Domestic and Gender-based Violence, Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes and Office of Community Mental Health.
Mamdani announced that Renita Francois, who served in the Office of Criminal Justice during the de Blasio administration, will serve as deputy mayor for community safety and oversee the initiative.

“Renita’s commitment to justice began in her childhood in South Central LA, continued in her early career working in Brooklyn Family Court and has been guided by the many years she has spent trying to transform both the way that government approaches public safety and the outcomes it can deliver,” Mamdani said.
“Our deputy mayor will oversee policy implementation, reform and expansion of B-HEARD to ensure that when New Yorkers are in a mental health crisis, they will actually receive the care that they need and that their only option is not simply a police response.”
The Behavioral Health Emergency Assistance Response Division (B-HEARD), a pilot program that launched in 2021, consists of a team of health professionals, including paramedics from the New York City Fire Department and mental health professionals from NYC Health + Hospitals that respond to 911 mental health calls.

Mamdani said there are “a number” of calls that come in each day that are deemed eligible for a B-HEARD response, but the city is limited in its capacity.
“[The executive order] imbues our deputy mayor with the policymaking expertise and power to ensure that B-HEARD is actually living up to the spirit of its intention,” he said. “
Our deputy mayor for community safety is not just going to be working within this portfolio. She’s also going to be in every single room where we are making the most critical decisions about the future of this city, ensuring that the lens of community safety is also being applied.”
Speaking on potential issues with the new public safety plan, New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said “there will be some mistakes.”
MAMDANI TAPS EX-CON TO LEAD NYC JAILS AS RIKERS REMAINS UNDER FEDERAL OVERSIGHT
“That happens everywhere. It happens in the police department,” Williams said. “Most of y’all are not saying, ‘Let’s dismantle the police department.’ As we move to this journey, which is the correct journey, and the nation is watching us, let’s work together.
“So, when we get to those bumps in the road, we can pave them out and make them smooth. Because this is about finding a way to allow our police officers to do the job that is best suited for them. Stop asking them to do the job of everyone.”
After the announcement, New York City Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch issued a statement saying she is looking forward to working with the team to “ensure New Yorkers get the support they need” while NYPD “officers remain focused on the work they are trained to do.”

“Keeping New Yorkers safe requires more than one approach,” Tisch said. “It means making sure people have access to the resources and services they need, whether that’s career training, an after-school program or a police response.”
