President Donald Trump slams Supreme Court after tariff ruling

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Donald Trump grudgingly praised the trio of liberal justices on the U.S. Supreme Court who helped block his use of an emergency law to impose sweeping tariffs on trading partners, pointing to their “loyalty” to Democrats.

“The Democrats on the court are thrilled, but they will automatically vote no,” Trump said Friday during a press conference. “They’re no automatic no. Just like in Congress, they’re an automatic no. They’re against anything that makes America strong, healthy and great again. They also are frankly a disgrace to our nation. Those justices, they’re an automatic no. No matter how good a case you have. It’s a no.”

“You can’t knock their loyalty. It’s one thing you can do with some of our people,” he said.

Trump held a press conference at the White House Friday, just hours after the Supreme Court ruled that Trump exceeded his authority by imposing sweeping tariffs using emergency powers. The decision was a 6-3 ruling, with conservative Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissenting.

Trump praised the three conservatives who dissented.

“I’d like to thank and congratulate Justices Thomas, Alito and Kavanaugh for their strength and wisdom and love of our country, which is right now very proud of those justices,” he said. “When you read the dissenting opinions, there’s no way that anyone can argue against them.”

Trump had promoted tariffs under emergency orders as a key piece of his policy related to the economy, arguing tariffs would usher in a flood of revenue from foreign nations that had been “ripping off” the U.S. for decades.

Tariffs also were leveraged to attract foreign businesses, as well as U.S. companies, to open up shop on U.S. soil to avoid the taxes, while simultaneously bolstering U.S. jobs and manufacturing.

Trump continued that the ruling “did not overrule tariffs, but “merely overruled a particular use of IEEPA tariffs.”

The International Emergency Economic Powers Act is a 1977 emergency powers law that lets a president, after declaring a national emergency tied to a foreign threat, restrict or regulate certain international economic transactions — most commonly to impose sanctions.

Amidst the news of Reena Paswan being sent to Rajya Sabha, Chirag bluntly said, ‘My mother is in politics…’

0

The political atmosphere is tight regarding the elections to be held on five Rajya Sabha seats of Bihar. If we look at the numerical strength in the Assembly, NDA’s victory is certain on four out of five seats. Out of these five seats, two are in the hands of Nitish Kumar’s party JDU and two in the hands of BJP. Meanwhile, discussions started that Union Minister Chirag Paswan will stake claim on one seat and his mother Reena Paswan will go to Rajya Sabha. However, now Chirag Paswan himself has put an end to such reports.

While talking to the media on Friday (February 20, 2026), Chirag Paswan said, “Lord, let me make it clear that my mother is not coming into politics. You people should not make this a part of the debate at all. She (Reena Paswan) keeps herself away from active politics. She wants to keep herself away.”

No claim for mother out of five seats

Union Minister Chirag Paswan further said, “Being a mother, it is certain that she is seen with me on the public stage or being my better half, she must be seen with my father, but she does not want to enter active politics at all. My mother has no claim on the five Rajya Sabha seats. I definitely believe that our NDA alliance will win five of the five seats. There is no doubt about it.” Will Upendra Kushwaha get a seat? Chirag Paswan looked calm on this question.

Chirag Paswan attacked the opposition

Earlier, while talking to the media in Hajipur, Chirag Paswan fiercely attacked the opposition. Budget On the opposition’s protest outside the Bihar Assembly during the session, Union Minister Chirag Paswan said, “If any incident happens, it is a matter of concern. The opposition may do politics on it, but it is a serious matter for our government. Even if one incident happens, it is a matter of concern for us… The Home Minister of Bihar has also ordered the local administration to be more alert… Such incidents should not happen for which our government is trying to take all possible steps… The family should get justice for that too.” We are equally committed.”

At least two killed in Israeli attack on Palestinian camp in Lebanon | Israel attacks Lebanon News

Lebanon’s official news agency NNA says ‘Israeli drone’ targeted the Hittin neighbourhood of the Ein el-Hilweh camp.

At least two people have been killed in an Israeli attack on Lebanon’s largest Palestinian refugee camp, the latest breach of a 2024 ceasefire deal with the armed group, Hezbollah.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reported on Friday that an “Israeli drone” targeted the Hittin neighbourhood of the Ein el-Hilweh camp, located on the outskirts of the southern city of Sidon.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health said two people were killed in the attack. The NNA had reported earlier that the strike killed a man from the al-Khatib family and wounded several others.

The Israeli army said in a statement that its forces had “struck a Hamas command centre from which terrorists operated” in response to “repeated violations of the ceasefire understandings”.

NNA reported that the strike caused “significant damage” to a building that had previously been used by the joint Palestinian force responsible for the camp’s security, but was now being rented by an individual to “operate a kitchen distributing food aid”.

Last November, Israel conducted a major raid on Ein el-Helweh that killed 13 people, including 11 children, according to the UN rights office.

The military said it was targeting Hamas, which called the claim a “fabrication”, stressing the group does not have training facilities in Lebanon’s refugee camps.

More than 10,000 attacks since truce

Israel has kept up regular strikes on Lebanon despite a November 2024 ceasefire that sought to halt more than a year of hostilities with armed group Hezbollah.

According to the United Nations, the Israeli military launched more than 10,000 air and ground attacks in the year since it agreed to halt hostilities.

The UN’s rights office said in November last year that it verified at least 108 civilian casualties from Israeli attacks since the ceasefire, including at least 21 women and 16 children.

Lebanon filed a complaint with the UN last month about the repeated Israeli violations, urging the UN Security Council to push Israel to end its attacks and fully withdraw from the country.

Israel continues to occupy five areas in Lebanese territory, blocking the reconstruction of destroyed border villages and preventing tens of thousands of displaced people from returning to their homes.

On Sunday, Lebanon said an Israeli strike near the Syrian border in the country’s east killed four people, as Israel said it targeted operatives from Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) armed group in Lebanon.

‘The most kind-hearted boy’: Families pay tribute after teen couple found dead at holiday park | UK News

The families of a teenage couple who died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at a holiday park in east Yorkshire have paid tribute.

The couple have been named by police, as a second man was arrested.

Cherish Bean, 15, and Ethan Slater, 17, were discovered at a rental property at Little Eden Holiday Park in Bridlington on Wednesday.

A 42-year-old man has become the second person to be arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter over their deaths, Humberside Police said.

An extension has been granted in relation to a 33-year-old man who was arrested on Thursday, allowing police to detain him for a further 12 hours.

An online fundraising page set up for Ethan’s family has so far raised more than £16,000.

The page says: “It is with unimaginable heartbreak that I write this. Our son Ethan tragically and unexpectedly passed away at just 17 years old, alongside his beautiful girlfriend.

“No parent should ever have to write these words. No family should ever have to face this pain.

“Ethan had his whole life ahead of him. He’ll never get to pass his driving test. He’ll never celebrate his 18th birthday. He’ll never reach the milestones we all assumed were waiting for him.”

Two charged with murder following death of three-year-old boy

The post continues: “He was the most kind hearted boy. With a natural warmth. He was funny, he was protective and he carried himself with a quiet strength and loyalty that made us so proud to call him our son.

“He was loved beyond measure. A son, a brother, a grandson, a friend. His smile lit up a room, and his absence has left a silence that feels impossible to fill. Our lives will never be the same without him.”

In a separate statement, Cherish’s mum paid tribute to her daughter, saying: “My perfect girl, my angel, has left this world and we are broken as a family. I am broken as a mother, and I will never ever be the same again.”

She added: “Ethan, bless you darling, such a good boy with a kind heart and I loved you like my own.

“I am broken please respect us whilst we grieve.”

Chief Superintendent Matt Peach from Humberside Police said a cordon remains in place at the holiday park and police “continue to work in co-ordination with the Health and Safety Executive alongside our partners from Humberside Fire & Rescue, and East Riding of Yorkshire Council”.

He said: “Our thoughts remain with the loved ones of both teenagers, who have been named by their families as 15-year-old Cherish Bean, and 17-year-old Ethan Slater, who tragically lost their lives.

“Specialist trained officers are providing ongoing support through this incredibly distressing time and I would ask again for people to refrain from speculation in respect of their privacy.

“Since we received the call of concern for safety on Wednesday morning, a dedicated team of detectives and specialist officers have continued to carry out detailed inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deaths, which are thought to be connected to carbon monoxide poisoning.”

Trump illegally used executive power to impose global tariffs, supreme court rules | US supreme court

0

The US supreme court declared many of Donald Trump’s tariffs illegal on Friday, in a sharp rebuke that topples a key pillar of the president’s aggressive economic agenda.

In a 6-3 ruling, the court decided that a 1977 law designed to address national emergencies did not provide the legal justification for most of the Trump administration’s tariffs on countries across the world. It is the first time the court has overruled one of Trump’s second-term policies.

Trump blasted the justices who ruled against him at a press conference, calling them “a disgrace to the nation” and said the ruling has emboldened him to enact “very powerful alternatives” to the tariffs declared illegal.

The president promptly announced he will enact a new 10% global baseline tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to impose tariffs for 150 days. Trump said that the administration would initiate investigations into unfair trading practices that could lead to permanent tariffs.

“While I am sure that they did not mean to do so, the Supreme Court’s decision today made a President’s ability to both regulate trade and impose tariffs, more powerful and more crystal clear, rather than less,” he said. “There will no longer be any doubt that the income coming in and the protection of our companies and country will actually increase because of this decision.”

The ruling was a significant blow for one of Trump’s boldest assertions of executive power since his return to the White House. Trump has used tariffs to aggressively reshape US trade policy, upending decades of agreements and collecting tens of billions of dollars from companies importing foreign goods.

Tariffs typically need to be approved by Congress, which has sole authority under the constitution to levy taxes. Trump argued that he had the right to impose tariffs on trading partners under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, which in some circumstances grants the president authority to regulate or prohibit international transactions during a national emergency.

But in its majority opinion, the court said the ability to enact tariffs during peacetime does in fact belong to Congress.

The court cited the creators of the constitution, who “recognized the unique importance of this taxing power – a power which ‘very clear[ly]’ includes the power to impose tariffs”.

“And they gave Congress ‘alone … access to the pockets of the people,” the opinion reads. “The Framers did not vest any part of the taxing power in the executive branch.”

The court also cited what’s known as the “major questions doctrine”, a principle under which the executive branch cannot rely on ambiguous language in laws passed by Congress to justify consequential action.

“These considerations apply with particular force where, as here, the purported delegation involves the core congressional power of the purse,” the court said. “When Congress has delegated its tariff powers, it has done so in explicit terms and subject to strict limits.”

Because of this, the president “must ‘point to clear congressional authorization’ to justify his extraordinary assertion of that power”, the court said. “He cannot.”

The court also pointed out that the White House conceded that the president “enjoys no inherent authority to impose tariffs during peacetime”, which is why it used the IEEPA to pass its tariffs.

Voting to strike down the tariffs were the court’s liberal bloc – Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Joining them were Chief Justice John Roberts, along with Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, who were both appointed by Trump during his first term.

In a dissenting opinion, Justice Brett Kavanaugh argued that the court’s opinion “is not likely to greatly restrict presidential tariff authority going forward” because the court essentially ruled that Trump just “checked the wrong statutory box by relying on IEEPA” instead of other laws to pass his tariffs.

Instead, the ruling will “likely generate other serious practice consequences in the near term”, including whether refunds will be issued on the tariffs.

“Refunds of billions of dollars would have significant consequences for the US Treasury. The Court says nothing today about whether, and if so how, the government should go about returning the billions of dollars that it has collected from importers,” Kavanaugh wrote. “That process is likely to be a ‘mess’, as was acknowledged at oral argument.”

While the president has claimed that tariffs would fill US federal coffers, revitalize the country’s industrial heartlands and make the world economy more “fair” to the US, economists have repeatedly warned they risk raising prices further for Americans after years of heightened inflation.

In a post on X, Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, called the decision a “victory for the wallets of every American consumer. Trump’s illegal tariff tax just collapsed – He tried to govern by decree and stuck families with the bill. Enough chaos. End the trade war.”

The US’s major trading partners reacted cautiously to the news. William Bain, head of trade policy at the British Chamber of Commerce, said: “While this decision gives clarity on the president’s executive powers to raise tariffs it does little to clear the murky waters for business.”

The ruling relates to Trump’s use of the IEEPA, said Bain. “Different legislation has been used for other US tariffs, such as for steel and aluminium, and the president also has other options at his disposal to retain his current regime … For the UK, the priority remains bringing tariffs down wherever possible.”

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said her administration was reviewing the decision. “Not only are we the largest exporter to the United States, but we are also the largest buyer of US products,” she said at her daily morning conference. “What that shows is that beyond a particular policy of greater protectionism, it is very important for both countries to maintain the trade agreement.”
