Whether you are a coffee lover or not, if you have ever seen the paper or plastic coffee cups available in cafes, you must have noticed that the lid on them has a small hole in it. This type of coffee cups are called takeout coffee cups because they are taken by those people who have to buy coffee while walking or go out, they do not drink coffee while sitting in the cafe. Have you ever wondered why there is a hole on the lid of these cups?

There are coffee lovers all over the world. Many people drink dozens of cups of coffee in a day. In big cities, when people leave for office or are returning from office, or take a break in between, they go out with coffee in a takeout cup. They do not need to sit and drink in cafes. There are two holes in these cups. One is the one from which people drink coffee and the other is a smaller hole than that. Today we will tell you the reason for making this small hole. Many people consider it just design.

The hole is used to release steam
This hole is of great use. When you drink coffee in a takeout coffee cup, there is no room for the heat and steam to escape. Normal cups, which are used to drink coffee while sitting in cafes, are completely open. Due to this, the heat starts reducing quickly and the steam also starts getting removed easily. But due to the lid on the takeout cup, there is no room for steam and heat to escape. For this reason, this hole is made, with the help of which steam can come out. In this way steam also comes out and the coffee does not cool down quickly.

The hole has another very important function!
This small hole has another important function. When you drink coffee by placing your mouth over the coffee-drinking hole, your mouth forms a tight seal around the hole. When you start drinking and the coffee comes out of the cup, an empty space i.e. vacuum is created behind it. When a vacuum is created, something is needed to replace the fluid that has escaped. This thing is air. Now if there is no air, the cup may deflate and the coffee may spill. Air enters through that small hole and replaces the coffee. For this reason, this small hole is also called pressure equalization port through which air goes inside. In this way the balance of air is maintained. When air easily goes in through this hole, coffee also comes out easily. If there is a blockage in the hole, the coffee will come out slowly or will not come out in a straight stream, due to which it may spill and cause discomfort to the drinker.
