Amid the long-running controversy over the construction of a new ballroom in US President Donald Trump’s White House, the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) on Thursday gave its final approval. This project is considered to be the biggest structural change in the White House in 70 years. This approval has come at a time when recently a federal judge Richard Lyon had ordered the construction work to be stopped. The judge had said that construction would not take place until Congress gives its permission.
Since then, Trump’s project has remained the center of debate in the country amid questions of design, security and historical preservation. The reason is that in this new construction, Trump has increased the size of the ballroom and its price is now about 400 million dollars. He removed the grand staircase on the south side of the White House and added an open veranda on the west side. According to the Trump administration, the purpose of this change was that invited guests could now hold ceremonies in a permanent ballroom instead of a tent.
Now understand what is the legal dispute?
Let us tell you that while banning this construction, Judge Lyon said that the President is not the owner of the White House, but its custodian. The National Trust for Historic Preservation filed a lawsuit against Trump after demolition of the former East Wing in October 2025. The judge ordered a temporary halt to Trump’s construction, but allowed security-related work to continue.

Why is there discussion about this project of Trump?
Experts believe that this project of Trump can be considered a part of Trump’s succession policy. Trying to leave a mark on his name in the White House. But legal complications and objections from the public/organizations are challenging the project. In such a situation, the judge made it clear that the President cannot take decisions like a private owner, due to which Trump will have to follow the law and regulatory process. Overall, it is believed that this ballroom of the White House is not just a matter of construction, it has also become a symbol of the conflict between power, transparency and historical preservation.
