The first solar eclipse of this year is going to occur on 17th February. You must have read many articles regarding what humans should and should not do during a solar eclipse. But have you ever wondered what animals do during this time?

The rules of the animal world are very different (image- file photo)
The first solar eclipse of the year is going to occur on 17 February 2026, which will be of annular (ring of fire) type and will be mainly visible in Antarctica. There are many religious and scientific rules for humans during the eclipse, such as staying at home, not eating, chanting mantras, etc. But have you ever wondered what animals do during this time?
There are no rules in the animal world. Just a sign of nature. Scientific studies show that animals behave strangely and unique during a solar eclipse, as the day suddenly becomes dark, the temperature drops and the wind changes. It seems like an ‘unusual night’ for them. Scientists have observed the behavior of animals during many eclipses (such as the total solar eclipse of 2017, 2024). Based on this, many shocking facts have come to light.
Revealed in research
Riverbanks Zoo (South Carolina) studied 17 species (mammals, birds, reptiles) during the 2017 eclipse, with 75% of the animals showing a reaction. Most of them behaved like they did at night – like roasting, sleeping or starting their night routine. Some animals got scared and some behaved differently. The behavior of birds is most affected. Diurnal birds become silent, stop flying and sit on trees. During the eclipse of 2024, birds in many areas of America sang ‘dawn chorus’ (dawn chirping), as if a new morning had come after the eclipse is over. At the same time, nocturnal species like owls and nighthawks become active and start making sounds.
let’s understand the night
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology observed from eBird data in 2017 that black vultures came to roost but flew away as soon as the sun came up. Changes also occur in insects. Crickets start chirping in the evening, fireflies start glowing. In 2017, there were 10 reports of fireflies from Missouri to North Carolina. Bees return to the hive, spiders start taking down their webs. During the 1991 eclipse, orb-weaving spiders in Mexico plucked webs as if it were night. Spiders with artificial light did not do this, which means the effect of light is clear. Mammals also did strange things. Giraffes start running in panic, horses shake their heads and form clusters. Cows return to the barn. Gorillas become aggressive in the zoo, chimpanzees climb to high places and look at the sky. Some animals like warthog, zebra, lion do not react at all. In a 2024 Fort Worth Zoo study, bonobos, owls, coyotes, etc. began evening routines. The same situation was seen in wildlife also.
