Trinamool Congress remained in power for 15 years. This power was the biggest reason for covering up its organizational contradictions. Both the attraction of power and the fear of power kept the leaders in the party. It is not hidden from anyone how the administration and police behaved with the leaders who left the party. Many leaders, from Subhendu Adhikari to Arjun Singh, alleged that they were politically targeted and implicated in various cases.
If we look at the prominent leaders who separated from the party, Mukul Roy in 2017, Arjun Singh in 2019, Subhendu Adhikari, Shishir Adhikari, Divyendu Adhikari, Sabyasachi Dutta and Jitendra Tiwari in 2020, Dinesh Trivedi, Sonali Guha and Rajiv Banerjee in 2021, and Tapas Roy left Trinamool Congress in 2024. Some of these leaders later returned due to circumstances.
There has been a long standing complaint about Mamata Banerjee’s old and trusted allies that their role became limited during the era of Abhishek Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee herself has publicly said that many people advised her to keep Abhishek away from politics. On the other hand, Abhishek Banerjee had his own team, which was considered influential both in organization and power. But today the same team appears almost invisible.
During and even after the attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Diamond Harbor, many leaders close to him were not seen active. One reason behind this can also be considered that these leaders had linked their political future with the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee. He hoped that after Mamata Banerjee, he would lead the party and the government. With the change of government this possibility also weakened.
