Bharatiya Janata Party has released its fifth list of candidates for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The names of new candidates are included in this list. The party has also announced changes in some of the previously announced candidates. This announcement has come amid intensification of election campaign.

Who was given the ticket from where?

As per the list approved by the Central Election Committee, Taraknath Chatterjee will contest from Krishnanagar North. Anupam Biswas will be the candidate from Kalyani (SC). Saurav Sikdar has been fielded from Dumdum North. Anindya Raju Banerjee will contest from Madhyamgram and Rudraprasad Banerjee from Uluberia Purba.

Changes made in previously announced candidates also

BJP has also made significant changes in the previously announced candidates. Kaushik Siddharth will now contest from Basirhat North instead of Narayan Chandra Mandal. Abhijeet Sardar has replaced Vishwajeet Khan in Bishnupur (SC). Shankar Sikdar will contest from Behala Purba in place of Sunil Maharaj. The elections are scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.

Nomination and Shah’s address

BJP leader Subhendu Adhikari filed nomination from Bhawanipur assembly constituency on April 2. He was accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya. Adhikari is contesting from both Bhawanipur and Nandigram seats, in Bhawanipur he will face Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. At the nomination rally, Amit Shah criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress, alleging corruption, lack of law and order and unemployment. Shah reiterated the vision of “Sonar Bangla” while emphasizing on forming a BJP government under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

Previous elections and upcoming contests

In the 2021 assembly elections, Trinamool Congress won a decisive victory with 213 seats. BJP had emerged as the main opposition party with 77 seats. A tough contest is expected between the two parties in the upcoming elections. This election will decide the political direction of the state.
