After the first arrest related to the British royal family in the Epstein case, the British police has taken the second major action. British police have arrested former British ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson on suspicion of misconduct following the Epstein file revelations. The arrest was made by British police after revelations of his links to convicted sex offender Epstein.
London’s Metropolitan Police Force said: ‘Officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office at an address in north London.’
Mandelson, 72, was dismissed from the most prestigious post in Britain’s diplomatic service in September 2025. Earlier, searches were also conducted at many places associated with him.
Mendelson was not named, in line with British police practice, but the suspect in this case had already been identified as Mendelson. Police are questioning Mandelson over documents that show he passed sensitive government information to Epstein a decade and a half ago. There are no allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
Accused of sharing sensitive government information
According to reports, the investigation began this month when the US Justice Department released additional documents related to Epstein. The files are claimed to contain emails that indicate Mandelson shared market-sensitive government information with Epstein while he was trade minister during the global financial crisis in 2009. The Prime Minister of Britain at that time was Gordon Brown.
Mandelson has been a Commissioner in the European Commission and was later appointed Britain’s Ambassador to the United States. Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed him to the post in December 2024, although he was already facing allegations of having contacts with Epstein. He was removed from office by Starmer in September 2025. Recently the Prime Minister also publicly apologized to Epstein’s victims and said that he made a mistake in trusting Mandelson and appointing him.
Second arrest after former Prince Andrew
Police are now investigating whether Mandelson passed sensitive government information to Epstein about 15 years ago. Investigation is ongoing. The arrest comes at a time when Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was also detained for questioning in another case involving Epstein. The former prince was released after 11 hours, while the investigation is still ongoing.
