Benchmark equity indices traded in a narrow range after witnessing sharp intraday swings on Tuesday, as uncertainty over the next round of US-Iran negotiations in Doha kept investors cautious. However, broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with buying interest in consumer durables, realty and chemicals.

IT stocks drag; consumer durables, realty gain

Sectoral performance remained mixed during the session. The IT index came under the most pressure as rate hikes in the US could weigh on client spending and economic growth in the country’s market, a key revenue source for the sector.

Media, FMCG, metal and banking indices also traded lower, while consumer durables, realty and chemicals advanced around 1 per cent.

Among the Nifty 50 stocks, Maruti, Titan, Bajaj Finance and Adani Ports were the top gainers. Eicher Motors, Tata Consumer, TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCL Tech were among the biggest laggards.

Market breadth remained positive on the NSE. Of the 3,219 stocks traded, 1,855 advanced, 1,247 declined and 117 remained unchanged. A total of 104 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 55 hit 52-week lows. As many as 77 stocks were locked in the upper circuit, while 58 hit the lower circuit.

In the midcap segment, Coromandel International, Cochin Shipyard, Bharat Dynamics and GMR Airports gained 3-4 per cent, while KPIT Technologies, National Aluminium, Yes Bank and Tata Elxsi declined 2-4 per cent.

Among smallcap stocks, Ola Electric, CGCL, Ather Energy and Gland Pharma surged 5-11 per cent. In contrast, GE Ship, Tata Technologies, Aegis Logistics and FSL fell 2-3 per cent.
