Nepal had come very close to creating history by causing an upset in this match. He scored 180 runs for six wickets in reply to England’s 184 runs for seven wickets. Lokesh Bam (39 not out in 20 balls) performed brilliantly and kept Nepal’s hopes of an upset victory alive, but could not win in the last over.
In the last over, Nepal needed 10 runs to win, but the boundary could not be reached for Nepal. In this way his brilliant performance with the bat ended with a close defeat. Sam Curran bowled continuous yorkers in the last over and Nepal’s team could score only five runs. But still more than 17,000 fans were present at Wankhede Stadium and they saw Nepal perform much better than their potential. Captain Rohit Paudel (39), Deependra Singh Airi (39), Kushal Bhurtel (29) and Lokesh Basam (four fours, two sixes) showed great spirit but they could not lead their team to victory.
When Nepal needed 46 runs in the last three overs, Bam batted brilliantly. He hit two sixes in the 18th over of Joffra Archer and two consecutive fours in the 19th over of Luke Wood. Bhurtel scored quickly in the beginning while a strong partnership of 82 runs for the third wicket between Paudel and Airi gave strength to Nepal. Nepal had lost the initial wicket in the form of Asif Shaikh (07) but Bhurtel created the momentum by scoring 29 runs in 17 balls with the help of four fours and a six.
But he was out in the sixth over. In the 14th over, Paudel increased the run rate and took Nepal towards the target. He hit a six and a four in the over of England’s most senior bowler Rashid Khan. However, after the drinks break, the rhythm of Aari and Paudel broke. Airi was out on the ball of Sam Curran in the 15th over. Soon after, Paudel also got caught out by Phil Salt at deep midwicket while trying to play a sweep shot off Liam Dawson.
