Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the successful test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile, further strengthening the country’s strategic nuclear power. Putin said the new Sarmat missile would be deployed for combat service by the end of this year. This missile will replace the old Voyevoda of the Soviet era.
Four times more strength than western countries
Putin has described this missile as the most powerful weapon in the world. He claimed that the power of the Sarmat’s warheads was four times greater than that of any Western missile. Putin has been continuously demonstrating his nuclear capability since sending troops to Ukraine in February 2022. Experts believe that this test is a big attempt to stop the help given to Ukraine by Western countries.
Shaitan-II capable of penetrating missile defense system
Known as Shaitan II in the West, this missile has a range of more than 35,000 kilometers. According to Putin, it is capable of sub-orbital flight. Its accuracy and firepower are much better than the old missiles. Russia has claimed that this missile can easily dodge any existing defense system of America. This missile is also capable of carrying hypersonic missiles like Avangard, which travel 27 times faster than the speed of sound.
New and dangerous nuclear arms race
The last nuclear weapons agreement between Russia and America expired in February this year. In such a situation, both the countries now have no legal restriction on the number of nuclear weapons. Apart from this, Putin has also announced that the Poseidon underwater drone and the Burevestnik cruise missile are in the final stages. Putin says that these steps have been taken in response to the American missile shield, so that the balance of strategic power is maintained in the world.
