Yogi government is working towards ensuring zero loss of life and minimum damage to agricultural land during monsoon this year. To achieve this goal, Uttar Pradesh Irrigation and Water Resources Department is making preparations on a war footing. All the measures including establishment of flood control room, cleaning of drains, protection of embankments, formation of flood protection committees will prove to be a big relief during the upcoming monsoon. Instructions have been given to set up integrated flood control rooms in all 18 divisions of the state by May 31 so that they can be operated from June 1.
According to the Irrigation and Water Resources Department, working at a record pace this year, embankments of approximately 4 thousand kilometers length have been protected so far. At the same time, work is going on on 300 projects to save the villages situated on the banks of rivers and drains and agricultural land from erosion. These will be completed by June 15, 2026. Erosion prevention works are being completed at sensitive and ultra-sensitive places. The security cordon is also being strengthened by using stone pitching and geo-bags on the river banks.
According to the department, special attention is being paid to the drainage system to deal with the problem of waterlogging in urban and rural areas. By March 2026, the work of silt cleaning of drains in more than 16 thousand kilometers length has been completed. Cleaning work at all remaining sensitive areas will be completed before the rains start. Through this, crops and villages will be saved from drowning due to uninterrupted drainage of water during heavy rains.
