Polls show 83% of Republicans back Trump on Iran despite split narrative

To read the mainstream news today, or to dip into the, shall we say, eccentric world of alt-right social media, one would think that the war in Iran has created a major fissure within the MAGA movement. Both the polling and the word on the street put the lie to this notion.

Take a Washington Post headline from this week that blared, “Vance Is in a Bind, Supporting a War That Could Cost Him Politically.” Pretty stern stuff, except that the very same day, a new poll from L&V showed that 83% of Republicans support the war, only 9% oppose.

President Trump in Oval Office

The same poll asked whom GOP voters trusted more on the Iran conflict, President Donald Trump or the podcasters Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly, who have been leading the isolationist charge. This was even more decisive: 83% to 6% in favor of the president.

Another poll, from Politico, focused directly on MAGA Republicans, the ones we are given to understand are starting to revolt. The result was that 81% support the Iran strikes, only 2%, presumably mostly podcasters, oppose them.

MIKE PENCE: TRUMP AND OUR INCREDIBLE MILITARY ARE ENDING 47 YEARS OF IRANIAN TERROR

It is easy to see why the liberals in legacy media and the relatively few anti-war conservative podcasters are licking their chops here. It does feel like Trump has broken a promise, and he can no longer claim to have started new wars. But Iraq this is not.

Let’s all catch a breath here, three weeks does not a “forever war” make.

If, six months from now, we are in an unpopular boots-on-the-ground quagmire in Iran, such as George W. Bush found himself in 20 years ago, then things might change. But right now, every indication is that Republicans are lined up behind their president.

AL JAZEERA OP-ED PRAISES US-ISRAEL OPERATION AGAINST IRAN, SAYS DEMS, MEDIA CRITICS ARE WRONG

In part, this is because, unlike in Iraq, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who learned the lessons of that mess personally, has laid out four clear goals for this operation, all of them achievable in relatively short order.

These are:

To deny Iran a nuclear capability

To debilitate Iran’s long-range missile capability

To destroy Iran’s navy

To disrupt its ability to fund proxy terror groups.

ROGAN SAYS VOTERS FEEL ‘BETRAYED’ BY TRUMP’S IRAN CAMPAIGN AFTER HE PLEDGED ‘NO MORE WARS’ FOR YEARS

Even though these goals have been repeated again and again by almost every official in the administration, the liberal media and alt-right podcasters simply refuse to hear them, insisting this is a war with no clear goal.

Further gas was poured on the false flames of widespread MAGA discontent last week with the resignation of Joe Kent as director of the National Counterterrorism Center, where he worked for Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who is famously anti-war.

It was telling that no sooner had Kent resigned than he was making the rounds of the right-wing anti-war podcasts, and perhaps more telling that he was immediately included in the lineup for a Steve Bannon-backed anti-Israel Catholic Conference in Washington, mostly made up of recent converts.

AMERICANS KNOW IRAN IS OUR ENEMY. IT’S TIME ESTABLISHMENT POLITICIANS AGREED

The anti-Israel, pro-isolationist wing of MAGA isn’t new. I saw all of these people, from Kent to Bannon to the podcasters, hanging out at CPAC parties four or five years ago. The point is that, at least on this issue, they have little sway among actual MAGA voters.

But, you ask, how can this be? All of these podcasts have millions and millions of clicks, but nobody actually knows what a click is, or if they are coming in their hundreds of thousands from foreign information operation bot farms.

Here is a question: If there are so many conservatives furious over the Iran conflict, where are they in real life? Why aren’t they marching in the streets? Why aren’t they filling convention halls? Why don’t I meet them in diners?

I posit, as do the polls, that it’s because very few of them actually exist.

My conversations with voters on the ground don’t always match up with polling, but in this case, they do. MAGA voters, even those who were opposed to an attack prior to Operation Epic Fury, trust not only Trump’s motives, but his ability to contain and end this conflict.

As the great social commentator Chuck D of Public Enemy once famously put it, “Don’t believe the hype.” The MAGA movement is squarely in Trump’s corner on the Iran conflict, and Trump has plenty of runway to achieve his war goals, end the conflict and prove his doubters, yet again, to be wrong.

Amidst war with Iran, Sri Lanka shows eye to Trump, American fighter jet not allowed to land

0

Amidst the ongoing war in the Middle East, Sri Lanka has given a big blow to Donald Trump by not allowing American fighter planes to land on its land. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake told Parliament that the government had in early March refused to allow two US fighter jets to land at Mattala International Airport in the country’s south-east.

We will not bow down: Sri Lanka bluntly tells US

Dissanayake said that two warplanes from the US military base in Djibouti had sought permission to visit Sri Lanka on March 4 and 8, but both requests were rejected. He said, ‘We want to maintain our neutrality despite various pressures. We will not bow down. The war in West Asia is creating challenges, but we will make every effort to remain neutral.

Fighter jet was equipped with anti-ship missile

The President said, ‘The Americans wanted to bring two fighter jets equipped with eight anti-ship missiles from the base in Djibouti to Mattala International Airport and we refused.’

Dissanayake’s statement came a day after his meeting with US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gore. According to the statement, the two leaders discussed efforts to secure vital sea lanes, secure ports, strengthen mutually beneficial trade relations, and advance a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

US targets Iranian ship near Sri Lanka

On March 4, 2026, the US targeted Iran’s ‘IRIS DENA’ ship near Galle, the southern coastal city of Sri Lanka, in which 84 sailors died, while 32 were saved. The ship was returning home after participating in the naval fleet review held in Visakhapatnam, India.

Two days later, another Iranian ship ‘IRIS Bushehr’ with 219 sailors wanted permission to enter Colombo port. Sri Lanka asked it to head towards the eastern port of Trincomalee after anchoring off the Colombo coast. The ship’s 204 sailors are currently stationed at the naval establishment near Colombo.

‘Cowards’: Trump slams NATO over lack of support in US–Israel war on Iran | News

0

Trump has been calling for major US allies to help secure the safety of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz which Tehran has effectively blocked.

President Donald Trump slammed NATO allies over their lack of support for the US-Israel war on Iran as the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed, with no end to the conflict in sight.

NATO countries are “COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER!” he posted on his Truth Social platform on Friday.

The US president complained NATO countries did not want to join the fight against Iran, yet still complain about high oil prices.

“Now that fight is militarily WON, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military maneuver that is the single reason for the high oil prices. So easy for them to do, with so little risk,” he wrote.

Trump has been calling for major US allies and others, none of whom were consulted or advised on the war, to help secure the safety of shipping through the Iran-controlled Strait of Hormuz. The conflict has roiled global markets, killed thousands and displaced millions ‌since US -Israeli strikes began on February 28.

Trump’s assailing of Europe comes as NATO announced on Friday it was “adjusting” its mission in Iraq, after officials in the country said the non-combat force had been temporarily withdrawn due to the Iran war.

“We can confirm that we are adjusting our posture in the context of NATO Mission Iraq,” alliance spokesperson Allison Hart told the AFP news agency in a statement.

Meanwhile, US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s supreme allied commander Europe, confirmed the relocation of all NATO Iraq mission personnel to Europe in a statement.

“I would like to thank the Republic of Iraq and all the Allies who assisted in the safe relocation of NATO personnel from Iraq,” the statement reads.

French President Emmanuel ‌Macron said after a two-day European Union summit in Brussels that defending international law and promoting de-escalation was “the best we can do”.

“I have ‌not heard anyone here express a willingness to enter this conflict – quite the opposite.”

‘No consensus’ on oil prices

The European government’s meeting in Brussels was dominated by the fallout from the war on Iran, particularly in the energy market.

Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen, reporting from Brussels, said the EU has not really “reached any consensus on measures that are going to be taken by the body as a whole”.

“This comes amid the announcement by the European Central Bank that it will cut growth forecasts and has raised inflation predictions in the coming months. So what we can expect, especially here in the European Union, is very high energy costs,” she said.

“Leaders discussed at length reforming a so-called energy trading system … but the general consensus was that there is no consensus.”

Unclear whether Ricky Hatton meant to take own life, coroner rules | UK News

0

It was unclear whether boxer Ricky Hatton intended to take his own life, a coroner ruled today.

The inquest in Stockport was told that the former world champion was more than twice the alcohol drink drive limit at the time of his death.

Alison Mutch, senior coroner for South Manchester recorded hanging as the cause of death but did not record a conclusion of suicide.

The coroner said that while he was the person who caused his own death, it was not clear that the 46 year-old intended to take his life.

She said police found no notes or anything that gave any suggestion of an intent to take his life.

He had been under the influence of alcohol and there were also brain changes identified by the pathologist at his post mortem as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) – a brain disease caused by repeated head trauma in contact sports like boxing.

The condition can cause mood swings, confusion and forgetfulness, things his family said they had noticed.

The coroner said it was not possible to determine how much of an impact this had had on his death, so she recorded a narrative verdict.

The inquest opened with some statements from several of Hatton’s family members who painted a picture of a man who was deeply loved and appreciated by them – and for whom his death came as a shock.

His son Campbell said he was “fearless” inside the ring, but had struggled outside, having been open about his issues with mental health, drugs and alcohol.

But said before his death his father “was in the best place he’d been in years”.

His former partner Jennifer, the mother of his two daughters, echoed this. She called him an “active present and loving father – seeing the girls multiple times a week”.

And she said when they went for dinner as a family on 12 September – the last time anyone saw him alive – he was making positive and detailed plans with the girls. He wanted the whole family to come and watch his upcoming fight in Dubai

The dinner was “fun” and he seemed “completely normal”. After dropping his family off he told them he would see them in a couple of days.

DS Helen Grigolis from Greater Manchester Police then described the hours leading up to the boxer’s death.

She said Ricky Hatton had not come out to meet his driver for an event as expected on 13 September.

His manager, Paul Speak, then arrived at his house around 6.30 in the morning the next day to pick him up for a flight to Dubai.

He tried calling him and opened the gate, and eventually used his own key.

He heard music coming from the games room – went in and found Mr Hatton already dead.

A post mortem had found evidence of alcohol being consumed in the hours before his death – when he died he was well over twice the drink drive limit – and of previous cocaine and cannabis use, but not as recently.

The inquest heard the pathologist had examined a brain sample and found changes unusual for someone his age – mostly commonly found in older adults with Alzheimers.

In 2023, the boxer spoke about his personal life and continuing mental health battles in a Sky documentary.

Hatton was the most popular British fighter of his era and tens of thousands of fans followed him to Las Vegas for his biggest fights.

“The Hitman” won the world title with a stunning win over favourite Kostya Tszyu in 2005 and went on to fight all-time greats such as Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao – ultimately losing.

In July, he announced he was coming out of retirement for a December bout in Dubai, 13 years on from his last pro fight. Hatton was meant to be flying there on the day he was found.

Thousands turned out on the streets of Greater Manchester for Hatton’s funeral procession in October to pay their respects. The likes of Liam Gallagher, Andrew Flintoff, Wayne Rooney and Tyson Fury also attended.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Manchester on Saturday to bid farewell to Ricky Hatton.

His son, Campbell, 24, told the service: “I can’t explain how much I’m going to miss you dad, and that we won’t be making any new memories – but the ones we did I will cherish forever.”

His daughters, Fearne, 12, and Millie, 13, also gave emotional tributes.

Daytona Beach declares state of emergency amid spring break chaos

A popular Florida spring break destination has declared a state of emergency stemming from several days of chaos leading to over 100 arrests. Additionally, five shootings were reported throughout Volusia County over the same timeframe.

The City of Daytona Beach issued the declaration, along with a 7-day overnight curfew for minors, in response to several recent incidents involving spring breakers wreaking havoc on the area, according to FOX 35.

“Daytona Beach should no longer position itself as a Spring Break destination,” Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said.

“It is not a decision against tourism, but a decision against unsanctioned high-risk activity that strains resources, disrupts our community and places unnecessary demands on public safety personnel.”

The move is reportedly in response to thousands of college-aged beachgoers descending on the sandy shores for unauthorized beach “takeover events” organized on social media, FOX 35 reported.

“We’re focusing in that core area with the kids that are out there under-age drinking, smoking weed, all that stuff, so that we have tools to be able to get them off the street,” Young added.

Last weekend, countless spring breakers arrived to partake in the unsanctioned event, draining resources and putting strain on local authorities attempting to maintain order.

In response to the chaos, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood declared various special event zones throughout Daytona Beach, FOX 35 reported. The move gives authorities the ability to double fines and citations, impound vehicles for up to 72 hours and issue occupancy limits on the beach.

Authorities made more than 130 arrests last weekend, including 84 in Daytona Beach and 49 in New Smyrna Beach.

Chitwood is also looking to prosecute organizers of the unsanctioned events promoted on social media after video of thousands of spring breakers frantically running from the beach went viral, with initial reports indicating the crowd was responding to the sound of gunshots in the area.

“We’re going to be the first county – and my attorneys are working on it now – we are coming after you financially,” Chitwood said in a news conference earlier this week, according to FOX 35.

“And if I could come after you criminally, I would. So, don’t sit behind a keyboard in Georgia or Orlando or wherever and think you’re going to do these truck events and these takeover events because it’s not going to happen. There is a way to do business. Get permits and do things the right way.”

GOT A TIP?

Chitwood later added there were no reports of gunshots on the beach and the source of the crowd’s panic was due to the sound of individuals smashing water bottles.

Officials have also noted that while they were aware of last Saturday’s takeover being promoted on social media, the department lacked the resources to adequately calm the chaos.

“It’s not like these folks RSVP,” Young reportedly said. “So it’s somewhat of a guessing game as to how many people are actually showing up, and we do our best to make sure we have resources out there, but truth be told, with the amount of people that were in town this weekend, I literally have, have about 222 sworn officers.”

Mexican teen youngest to die in ICE custody since start of Trump’s second term | US News

0

A 19-year-old Mexican has become the youngest person to die in ICE custody since the start of Donald Trump’s second term.

Royer Perez-Jimenez “died of presumed suicide” on Monday at the Glades County Detention Centre in south Florida, ICE said in a statement, although his official cause of death is still being investigated.

He was also the 46th person to die in ICE custody since the start of US President Donald Trump’s second term in January 2025, the 13th immigrant to die in ICE custody this year and the second this week.

ICE said an officer found Mr Perez-Jimenez “unconscious and unresponsive” just after 2.30am on Monday.

Staff began performing CPR in a bid to revive him, but he was declared dead soon after.

The teenager, who had been in ICE custody for around a month, was arrested on 22 January by sheriff’s officers in Volusia County in east-central Florida and charged with impersonating and resisting an officer, ICE said.

Such deaths in immigration were “unacceptable”, Mexican officials said in a statement, while calling for a prompt and thorough investigation.

Officials from the Mexican consulate in Miami visited the facility and asked authorities for documentation about the case.

Carly Pérez Fernández, from Detention Watch Network, a national coalition advocating against immigrant detention, said immigration detention “deprives people of freedom, isolates people away from loved ones, and subjects people to abysmal conditions”.

Some detainees have reported finding worms in their food, nonfunctioning toilets and overflowing sewage.

ICE has been an integral part of the administration’s crackdown on immigration since Mr Trump returned to the White House in January 2025.

Its deployment has led to protests in major cities, such as in Minneapolis, where mother-of-three Renee Good and ICU nurse Alex Pretti were fatally shot by ICE officers.
