Blue Origin applies to launch 51,000 datacenter satellites • The Register

Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin has applied to launch up to 51,600 datacenter satellites.

A Thursday filing argues that the US Federal Communications Commission should approve Blue Origin’s plans because “insatiable demand for AI workloads” means orbiting servers represent “a complement to terrestrial infrastructure by introducing a new compute tier that operates independently of Earth-based constraints.”

Blue Origin also argues that datacenters in space will “enable U.S. companies developing and using AI to flourish, accelerating breakthroughs in machine learning, autonomous systems, and predictive analytics in support of broad societal benefit.”

But the company says it will be hard to build all the AI infrastructure we need on Earth.

“Space-based datacenters can help break this bottleneck,” the company claims. “The built-in efficiencies of solar-powered satellites, always-on solar energy, lack of land or displacement costs, and nonexistent grid infrastructure disparities, fundamentally lower the marginal cost of compute capacity compared to terrestrial alternatives.”

Those claims are hotly contested on grounds that the technology for orbiting datacenters doesn’t exist and will likely be unreliable and therefore impractical.

Blue Origin wants to build orbiting datacenters anyway and says its planned “Project Sunrise” will see it launch “up to 51,600 satellites operating in sun-synchronous orbits from 500–1,800 km, with inclinations between 97 degrees and 104 degrees, with each orbital plane containing approximately 300–1,000 satellites.”

The company says it will use optical links to connect satellites to each other and rely on another of its planned projects – the TeraWave space broadband service – to connect to terra firma.

Blue Origin has yet to launch a single TeraWave satellite and has only flown the New Glen rocket it plans to use for datacenter satellite launches twice. The filing says the company plans to launch the first of its planned 5,000-plus TeraWave orbiters before the end of 2027.

Much of the filing concerns the spectrum Project Sunrise will use to communicate, and how its plans won’t inconvenience any other stakeholders.

But it also points out that Blue Origin hasn’t filed documentation with the International Telecommunications Union, which also has a say in these matters.

Project Sunrise is therefore likely a long way over the horizon.

The Register suggests it may lose its name before it launches, as Australian airline Qantas uses the same moniker for its plan to fly non-stop from Sydney and Melbourne to New York and London, journeys that will take around 20 hours. ®

Iran women’s football team feted in Tehran after asylum battle at Asian Cup | Football News

Iran’s national football team returned to their war-torn nation after several of the players sought asylum in Australia.

Iranian authorities on Thursday gave the national women’s football team a hero’s welcome after their return from Australia, where some had made and then withdrawn asylum claims, amid accusations Iran had pressured their families.

Six players and one backroom staff member who travelled to Australia for the Women’s Asian Cup sought asylum earlier this month after they prompted criticism from hardliners in Iran for failing to sing the national anthem before their first match.

Five of them later changed their minds and returned home along with the rest of the team, including captain Zahra Ghanbari, with their fate prompting international concern amid the US-Israel war on Iran.

Activists have accused Iranian authorities of pressuring the women’s families, including summoning their parents for interrogation, while Tehran has alleged that Australia sought to force the athletes to defect.

Several thousand people, many holding Iranian flags, turned out for the welcome ceremony on Thursday evening in Valiasr Square in central Tehran, where other pro-government rallies have taken place in recent weeks, state TV images showed.

“My Choice. My Homeland,” read a slogan on a giant billboard on the square that showed the players in their national kit and mandatory hijabs saluting the Iranian flag.

Flanked by team members, Iranian football federation President Mehdi Taj said on stage, “What is certain is that these athletes are loyal to the homeland, flag, leader and revolution.”

Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani, one of the most high-profile women in Iranian politics, told the team members: “All Iranians were waiting for you; welcome to Iran.”

‘Threatening their families’

As onlookers cheered the players, giant AI-generated images of the women were projected on a screen showing them pledging loyalty to the Iranian flag against a background of Iranian national landmarks.

Two squad members have remained in Australia, but the remainder of the team, including the five other women who initially applied for asylum, arrived in Iran on Wednesday after a long journey home via Malaysia, Oman and Turkiye.

Activists have accused Iranian authorities of pressuring these five women into changing their minds through intelligence agents putting pressure on their families at home.

“The regime in Iran started threatening their families and basically took their families hostage. Because of that, they were forced to withdraw their asylum and go back to Iran,” Shiva Amini, a former Iranian national football player, who now lives in exile and campaigns on women’s rights, wrote on social media.

But Farideh Shojaei, an Iranian football official who travelled to Australia, said the players had been offered “houses, cars, money, promises of contracts with professional clubs, as well as humanitarian visas”.

“Fortunately, the members of our team valued their national identity above all else and turned these offers down,” she told Iranian media.

Before their opening game, the Iranian team fell silent as the national anthem played, although they later sang it in subsequent matches. An Iranian state TV presenter branded the players “wartime traitors”.

A central feature of the welcome ceremony in Tehran was singing the national anthem of the Islamic Republic, with players and officials joining in.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has made a big claim while conveying greetings to the people of Iran on Nowruz. According to him, Iran has achieved victory over America and Israel. According to him, the unity of the people despite different opinions within the country has weakened the enemy. America and Israel thought that they would topple the government by killing big leaders, but this did not happen.

‘Attacks in Turkey-Oman are an attempt to create division in the region’
Khamenei also alleged that the attacks in Turkey and Oman were a conspiracy by Zionist forces (Israel) to create divisions in the region. He said that Iran has common religious and strategic interests with neighboring countries and everyone should come together to counter the ‘big powers’ (America etc.).

We do not want to make nuclear weapons- Pezheshikayan
Iran’s President Masoud Pejeshikeyan gave a message to the country and the world on the occasion of Nowruz (Persian New Year). During this, he clearly said that Iran has no intention of making nuclear weapons, it does not want war with its neighboring countries. The President said that our problems are due to the interference of external enemies. Our neighbors are like our brothers, we want to end our differences.

‘Making nuclear weapons is prohibited in Islam’
During this time he also made a big proposal. According to Pejeshikayan, to maintain peace in West Asia, a joint security system of Islamic countries should be created and there should be no need for outside countries (like America) in it. He also reiterated that according to Mojtaba Khamenei, making nuclear weapons is haram (wrong) in Islam, so Iran will not do so.

Apple Warns Older iPhones Vulnerable to Coruna, DarkSword Exploit Kit Attacks

Coruna, DarkSword Exploit Kit Attacks

Apple is urging users who are still running an outdated version of iOS to update their iPhones to secure against web-based attacks carried out via powerful exploit kits like Coruna and DarkSword.

These attacks employ malicious web content to target out-of-date versions of iOS, triggering an infection chain that leads to the theft of sensitive data.

“For example, if you’re using an older version of iOS and were to click a malicious link or visit a compromised website, the data on your iPhone might be at risk of being stolen,” Apple said in a support document.

“We thoroughly investigated these issues as they were found and released software updates as quickly as possible for the most recent operating system versions to address vulnerabilities and disrupt such attacks.”

Users who are already on the latest version of the iPhone software do not need to take any action. This includes iOS versions 15 through 26, which come with fixes for the various security flaws weaponized by the exploit kits. For others, Apple is recommending the following course of action –

  • Update to iOS 15.8.7, iPadOS 15.8.7, iOS 16.7.15, and iPadOS 16.7.15 for older devices that cannot update to the latest version of iOS
  • Update to iOS 15 for devices with iOS 13 or iOS 14 to receive the latest protections along with a Critical Security Update that’s expected to be pushed in the “next few days.”
  • Consider enabling Lockdown Mode, if available, in scenarios where updating the device is not an option to reduce the attack surface and protect against malicious web content and other threats.

“Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products, and devices with updated software were not at risk from these reported attacks,” Cupertino noted.

Apple’s advisory comes in the wake of recent reports about two iOS exploits that have been put to use by multiple threat actors of varied motivations to steal sensitive data from compromised devices. These kits are delivered through a watering hole attack via compromised websites.

iVerify said the discoveries show that iOS vulnerabilities, which were once being abused to selectively target individuals in state-sponsored mobile spyware attacks, are being exploited on a mass-scale by other threat actors.

“The exploit’s relative simplicity to deploy, along with its quick adoption by multiple threat actors in multiple countries, signals that these powerful tools are now readily available on the secondary market for less-sophisticated actors,” Spencer Parker, chief product officer at iVerify, said, adding, “nation-state-grade mobile exploitation is now available for mass attack.”

“This represents a new level of scale, making widespread mobile attacks a critical and unavoidable concern for all enterprises. The evidence confirms that these exploits are easy to repurpose and redeploy, making it highly likely that modified deployments are actively infecting unpatched users.”

West Asia Conflict: Two Indian tankers ready to sail through Strait of Hormuz, know where both gas carriers are standing now – West Asia Conflict: Indian Gas Tankers Prepare To Sail Through Strait Of Hormuz: Report

0

An important news has come to light amidst the ongoing tension in West Asia. According to the report, two gas tankers (ships carrying LPG) of India are preparing to pass through the Strait of Hormuz soon. Both these ships are currently standing in the Gulf waters and the situation is being monitored. Let us tell you that India imports oil and gas in large quantities, and a large part of it comes through this route. In such a situation, if this route becomes unsafe, the supply of oil and gas may be affected. Due to this, the prices of petrol, diesel and gas in India may increase, along with this, trade and shipping may also be affected.

Why did the movement of ships stop?
No ship carrying crude oil has passed through this route in the last 24 hours. According to the information, an empty oil tanker, which has been banned by America, has returned back to Iran. It is clear that due to tension and danger in the area, shipping companies are currently taking precautions.

Why is the whole world worried?
Because, 20% of the world’s oil passes through here (Strait of Hormuz). If there is any major dispute or attack here, there can be a huge jump in global oil prices. The situation is currently tense in the Strait of Hormuz, but Indian ships are preparing to pass through this route again. This means that India is succeeding in maintaining its energy transport through diplomatic means.

What is the Strait of Hormuz?
The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important sea route, connecting the Gulf with the Indian Ocean. About 20% of the world’s oil passes through this route, so every movement here affects the entire world.

Conflict and military activity in West Asia
The conflict began on February 28 when the US and Israel jointly launched a massive attack on Iran, in which Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was also killed. Iran’s new supreme leader and Ali Khamenei’s son Mojtaba Khamenei has said in his first public message that Iran will definitely take revenge for its killed people. He also warned that the policy of keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed would continue and that neighboring countries should stop hosting US military bases.
