Sensex, Nifty crash 3.26% in biggest fall since June 2024

The sell-off, triggered by the escalating Israel-Iran conflict that sent Brent crude surging past $114 per barrel, wiped out the gains of the past three sessions in a single day.

Markets suffered their worst single-day fall since June 2024 on Thursday, with the BSE Sensex and the Nifty50 closing 3.3 per cent lower, weighed down by HDFC Bank, spike in crude prices and the hawkish tone adopted by the US Federal Reserve, which kept interest rates unchanged.

The Sensex fell nearly 2500 points and Nifty tumbled over 775 points, with Shriram Finance, Eternal, and HDFC Bank leading the losses. HDFC Bank, which had fallen to a 52-week low of ₹770 in opening trade, recovered to end 5.1 per cent lower.

India VIX

The volatility indicator India VIX surged over 21 per cent to 22.80. The sell-off, triggered by the escalating Israel-Iran conflict that sent Brent crude surging past $114 per barrel, wiped out the gains of the past three sessions in a single day. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global oil transit corridor — pushed crude prices near four-year highs, rattling energy-import-dependent economies like India. Natural gas prices surged over 6 per cent following reports of damage to key LNG infrastructure.

The US Federal Reserve’s decision to hold benchmark rates steady at 3.50 per cent–3.75 per cent, while signaling a higher inflation outlook due to rising energy prices, compounded the negative sentiment.

“…the near-term outlook remains strongly bearish, and any pullback towards resistance levels is likely to be sold into unless sentiment improves materially,” said Hitesh Tailor, Technical Research Analyst at Choice Equity Broking.

The Nifty opened with a gap-down of 580 points, staged a brief 15-minute recovery attempt, then slid lower after 1 pm, closing near its one-year low. Bank Nifty fell 3.4 per cent. All sectoral indices closed in the red with auto, realty, financial services and private bank indices among the deepest losers. Downstream oil refiners, paint companies, tire manufacturers and aviation stocks bore additional pain from margin-compression fears. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 3.19 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 dropped 2.94 per cent.

Globally, Asian markets closed sharply lower: Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 3.38 per cent to 53,372.50; Hang Seng declined 2.02 per cent to 25,500.60; South Korea’s Kospi dropped 2.73 per cent to 5,763.22; Taiwan Weighted loss 1.92 per cent; Shanghai Composite shed 1.39 per cent to 4,006.55; and Australia’s ASX 200 fell 1.65 per cent to 8,497.80. Bangladesh’s DSE 30 bucked the trend, rising 0.37 per cent. Equities across Europe also down in the range of 1-4 per cent.

Gold falls over 3.4%

Contrary to expectations, safe-haven assets offered no refuge. Gold fell over 3.4 per cent on Comex, breaching $4,700, while silver dropped nearly 6 per cent, as the Fed’s hawkish posture strengthened the dollar. DII-buying provided only partial cushion. As against FPI selling of ₹7,207 crore, DIIs bought shares worth ₹3,410 crore.

Technically, the Nifty has breached its prior swing low of 22,955, slipping below all major moving averages. Immediate support lies at 22,700–22,500, while the 23,378–23,618 gap zone acts as stiff resistance.

“…any pullback is likely to attract selling pressure as long as the index trades below its 21-day EMA,” said Vishnu Kant Upadhyay, AVP Research Advisory, Master Capital Services.

Markets will track geopolitical developments, crude price trajectory, and policy decisions from the Bank of England and the European Central Bank in the coming sessions. Analysts say a clear de-escalation in West Asia tensions is the only near-term catalyst that could arrest the downtrend, failing which the index remains biased toward further weakness.

4chan website fined by Ofcom for failing to protect children from seeing pornography | UK News

0

Online forum 4Chan has been fined £450,000 by regulator Ofcom for failing to have age checks in place to stop children from seeing pornography on its site.

The controversial US website must now add an effective age check by 2 April or face a penalty of £500 a day, the online safety watchdog said.

Ofcom has also fined 4Chan a further £50,000 for not assessing the risk of people seeing illegal material on its platform.

‘We’ve got to act more quickly’

It has fined the website an additional £20,000 for failing to set out in its terms of service how it protects users from illegal content.

It must also address these failings by 2 April or face extra daily penalties of £200 and £100 respectively.

Suzanne Cater, director of enforcement at Ofcom, said: “Companies – wherever they’re based – are not allowed to sell unsafe toys to children in the UK.

“And society has long protected youngsters from things like alcohol, smoking and gambling. The digital world should be no different.

“The UK is setting new standards for online safety.

“Age checks and risk assessments are cornerstones of our laws, and we’ll take robust enforcement action against firms that fall short.”

The online community harming teens

The fine is the latest one issued to 4Chan by Ofcom as it increases pressure on the US firm to meet its online safety rules.

Last October, Ofcom issued a £20,000 penalty to the group for ignoring requests to share information about the risk of illegal content on its platform.

4Chan was not immediately available for comment.

‘I was six when I was exposed to pornography’

New online safety protections for children and adults came into force on 25 July last year under the UK’s Online Safety Act, which sees new duties placed on platforms to take down illegal and harmful content.

In August last year, 4Chan launched a legal case against Ofcom in the US over claims it tried to “censor” the website.

Ex-Duke star Jay Bilas shares Coach K’s micro-bracket strategy for March Madness

Looking at 68 teams in a March Madness bracket can be pretty overwhelming, especially for those playing in the tournament.

However, former Duke player Jay Bilas said his legendary former head coach, Mike Krzyzewski, had a brilliant way of dumbing it down to take the pressure off the Blue Devils.

“I played for Coach K at Duke and in 1986, my senior year, that was the second year of the 64-team bracket,” Bilas told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. “And he broke the tournament down to basically a four-team tournament the first weekend. He talked about the opposite side of our bracket, the 32 teams opposite our side and said, ‘Look at all those teams in there,’ and started talking about how good some of them were. And then he goes, ‘Who cares? Only one team is coming out of there. Only one team comes out of there. Whatever happens, fine. We’ll play that one team on Monday night for the championship.’

“And so he gave us a bracket. It was a four-team bracket, and we were playing at Greensboro in the first and second rounds. I think he called it the Greensboro Invitational and said, ‘This is all we got to worry about.’ And we’re like, ‘Geez, we can process that.’ He made it easier. And then the second week, same thing. We played at the Meadowlands – Meadowlands Invitational. We played DePaul, and then David Robinson and Navy was on the other side of that. So we only had to deal with a four-team tournament. Then we get to the Final Four, four-team tournament. And it really made it a lot easier.”

Now, like the rest of us, Bilas watches the tournament as a fan. And this year, he will be enjoying it with some ice-cold Garage Beer, founded by Travis and Jason Kelce.

“I like beer, and I like garages,” Bilas joked, adding that the Kelce brothers are a key reason why he wanted to be a spokesperson for the beverage this March Madness. “I probably shouldn’t be talking about how much I like beer, but I like beer and I like Garage Beer. And there’s nothing better than tournament time, and those two things go together really well. I try to avoid it when I’m on the air, but I’m just like everybody else — when there’s a good game on, I like to crack one open.”

And despite likely being several Garage Beers deep throughout the tournament, there is a good chance that Bilas, a self-proclaimed March Madness “nerd,” will be able to remember just about everything from this tournament.

However, because of Coach K’s bracket practice, that encyclopedia in Bilas’ brain doesn’t have many pages on 1986.

“I can talk to you about games that happened at just about any tournament and remember it. I don’t remember what happened in that 1986 tournament,” Bilas said. “Because all I cared about was what we did. I mean, it’s really kind of remarkable. I don’t really remember anything else because of the way Coach K presented it to us and the way we approached it. And I know a lot of teams do that now, and I, at least speaking for me, I thought that was extraordinarily helpful to us.”
