Trump-Xi meeting: Could China, US form a ‘G2’? | International Trade News

0

US President Donald Trump is set to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday for a two-day summit with China’s President Xi Jinping, marking the two leaders’ first face-to-face talks six months after reaching a trade war truce.

The summit, which was delayed from March because of the US-Israeli war on Iran, comes as Trump needs a foreign policy win amid dissatisfaction at home over the latest Middle East quagmire.

US-China ties have also been strained by the war, which has damaged Beijing’s economy. Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Washington’s competing blockade of Iranian ports have left Chinese ships stranded and severely affected China’s crude oil imports, half of which are shipped from the Middle East.

Trump is likely to renew calls for China to join an “international operation” to open the Strait of Hormuz, which Beijing has so far resisted. Xi is expected to look for gains on pressing issues, including trade, rare-earth minerals and a US recognition of China’s rights over self-ruling Taiwan.

As Trump threatens to quite NATO over the alliance’s refusal to back the US-Israeli war on Iran, further distancing the US from its traditional allies, the Trump-Xi summit has revitalised the idea of a Group of Two (G2) – an informal grouping in which the world’s two largest superpowers could steer the world’s collective future.

What is a Group of Two – or ‘G2’?

The concept of a “G2” between China and the US – similar to the Group of Seven (G7) or Group of 20 (G20) forums gathering the world’s leading industrialised economies – was originally proposed by prominent US economist C Fred Bergsten in 2005.

In its original definition, it advocated for a shared responsibility for the world’s two top economies to stabilise global markets and tackle issues of global concern, rather than suggesting a hegemony over others.

The concept gained traction during the administration of former US President Barack Obama, who established the Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) with Chinese President Hu Jintao in 2009 to seek “positive, cooperative, and comprehensive” US-China relations, according to a White House communique at the time.

The Obama team believed that strategic engagement with China would be necessary to solve global challenges, including climate change and the transition to clean energy.

How likely is a G2 between the US and China?

Over the years, the idea that the US and China could be responsible stewards for the collective good has been met with significant scepticism. The idea of a G2 now triggers fears of a departure from a multilateral system towards one in which two superpowers assert their interests over those of other nations.

Jing Gu, director of the Centre for Rising Powers and Global Development at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) in the UK, said the meeting should not be seen as the beginning of a G2, but instead as “strategic reconnaissance”.

“Both sides are trying to read the other’s latest bottom line, clarify red lines and test how far pressure can go before stable tension turns into rupture,” Gu told Al Jazeera.

“The purpose is not necessarily to end the contest but to understand the terrain, manage the tempo and avoid fighting on unfavourable terms. In that sense, the visit is less about reconciliation than about preserving a controlled tension in which competition can continue without tipping into open collision.”

Negotiations on trade, technology, governance and security issues “all sit around this core question: how to keep competition intense but still bounded”, Gu added.

Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute in London, UK, said a trade deal of some sort is likely, “as both want to ensure the meeting [is] a success. But that’s not the same as working as G2, which is unlikely.”

“The basic tension is that Trump wants to reassert the US as the most powerful country, and Xi wants the same. They cannot both succeed, even if Xi only wants China to be recognised as pre-eminent rather than as the hegemon,” he added.

How friendly are the US and China right now?

When Trump and Xi met in South Korea on October 30 and agreed to roll back various trade restrictions after months of negotiations, both sides hailed the meeting as positive.

Trump went as far as giving it a “12-out-of-10” rating and touting it as a “G2” meeting, albeit it not resulting in a joint deal or statement that could suggest a formally united front. The characterisation, however, grabbed the headlines as it marked Trump’s recognition of China as a superpower Washington must contend with.

Following months of an escalating trade war, Xi also extended an olive branch to Trump when he opened the talks in Busan, describing China’s ambitions as “not incompatible with President Trump’s goal of ‘Making America Great Again’”.

As the meeting ended, the leaders shook hands and Xi said their countries should “be partners and friends”, hinting at a partnership reminiscent of the G2 concept. “China and the US can jointly shoulder our responsibility as major countries and work together to accomplish more great and concrete things for the good of our two countries and the whole world,” he said.

Below the veneer of cooperation, however, the underlying obstacle to a G2 is that “China is becoming more powerful relative to the US, fuelled in key respects by its rapid emergence as a global technology powerhouse,” John Minnich, a lecturer on US-China relations at the London School of Economics (LSE), told Al Jazeera.

While the two superpowers could maintain channels of communication on issues including artificial intelligence (AI) safety, Minnich said the US was unlikely “to quietly accept China as a true technological, economic and military peer”, making “significant cooperation difficult to sustain”.

Zhiqun Zhu, director of the China Institute at Bucknell University in the US, said Trump did a “remarkable job” in reversing the previous confrontational approach towards China.

“Yet, he is transactional and likes to make deals in the short term. He is not interested in institutionalising his moderate approach to China, which would help create long-term stability and could be a turning point for US-China relations,” Zhu told Al Jazeera.

China is also unlikely to be interested in forming a G2 with the US, Zhu said, “because China has always emphasised the authority of the United Nations and has become a defender of the UN-centred international regime in this turbulent world”.

China has established itself as a leading proponent of a multipolar world order, Zhu continued, advocating for global affairs to be handled by the international community, rather than a single superpower – or two.

How does the rest of the world view all this?

According to Gu, at IDS, the formation of a G2 would imply that the rest of the world would accept US–China co-management. “That is doubtful,” the analyst said. “Europe, India, Japan, Brazil, South Africa, the Middle East, ASEAN countries and many developing economies do not want global order to be negotiated over their heads.”

Tsang, at the SOAS China Institute, said that if a G2 were to materialise, “the world would be dominated by two self-centred powers only interested in themselves”, while global institutions like the World Trade Organization would be “even less relevant”.

The prospect of a G2 raises concerns for allies of the US, who fear that Washington and Beijing could cut them out of important decisions and make deals that work against their interests.

Europe is especially worried about a trade deal that cuts it out and accelerates its declining position of strength on the world stage. Transatlantic relations between the EU and the US have been marked by rising tensions on a flurry of issues, including NATO membership, Trump’s claims on Greenland and military assistance to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022.

EU leaders agreed in February on wide-ranging commitments to improve the bloc’s border-free internal market, in a bid to curb its dependency on the US for liquified natural gas (LNG) and on China for critical rare-earth minerals, on which China has a stranglehold and which are vital for the development of technology, defence and a plethora of manufactured goods.

French President Emmanuel Macron said at the time that EU leaders shared a sense of “urgency” on this matter due to the superpowers’ attitudes. “We have to accelerate. We are shaken by competition, sometimes by unfair competition and tariffs,” he said.

India, Brazil and other major emerging economies within the BRICS grouping of economies also view growing US-China relations as a challenge to their own global superpower aspirations. Recently, New Delhi and Brasilia have been deepening their strategic alliance, agreeing in February to double existing bilateral trade to $30bn by 2030, especially of critical minerals and rare-earth metals.

“Any deal involving Chinese investment in the US would direct scarce capital and technology from Global South countries, where Chinese firms have invested heavily in building out clean energy-related manufacturing capacity in recent years, toward the US,” Minnich, at LSE, said.

“US-China collusion could also be bad news for Europe, which is caught between and highly vulnerable to coercion from both powers.”

While many countries want a stable US-China relationship, ISD senior research fellow Gu said, Europe does not want to “become a rule-taker in a world where Washington and Beijing set the terms of trade, technology, climate finance, AI governance and industrial policy”.

“Europe’s anxiety is not only about rivalry; it is also about exclusion,” she said.

As for the Global South, “they do not want a world divided into spheres of influence or governed through a bilateral bargain”.

“They want options, finance, technology, markets and policy space,” Gu added. “They do not want to be reduced to terrain on which great powers compete.”

CBP deports 27 cruise ship workers alleged to possess CSEM material

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) deported 27 cruise ship workers alleged to have been involved in the receipt or production of child pornography, the agency said in a Monday statement.

CBP boarded eight cruise liners ported in San Diego from April 23-27 as part of an ongoing investigation into child sexual exploitation material (CSEM), CBP told Fox News Digital.

The agency detained 28 employees and determined 27 of them “were involved in either the receipt, possession, transportation, distribution, or viewing of CSEM or child pornography,” an agency spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

CBP canceled visas for 27 of the individuals, 26 of whom were from the Philippines, and deported them back to their home countries.

At least 10 of the detained subjects were employees of Disney Cruise Line, according to NewsNation.

A spokesperson for Disney Cruise Line told NBC News they have a “zero-tolerance policy for this type of behavior” and that the company cooperated with the investigation fully.

“While the majority of these individuals were not from our cruise line, those who were are no longer with the company,” the spokesperson told NBC.

Another cruise liner, Holland America, also confirmed to NBC that some of its employees were involved in the investigation. The company called the allegations “deeply disturbing” and told NBC the employees had been “terminated.”

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California told KPBS that there are no pending charges for the individuals in the district.

A source with knowledge of CBP operations told Fox News Digital that the bar for deportations is lower than it would be to prosecute the alleged offenders criminally.

“A criminal charge is not required for an individual to be found inadmissible or for their visa to be revoked; administrative thresholds for visa cancellations are distinct from criminal prosecution standards,” the source told Fox News Digital.

“Visa revocations may occur when information surfaces after the initial visa issuance that would preclude admission to the United States. CBP retains the authority to cancel visas and refuse admission at any time should new information arise,” the source concluded.

Fox News Digital contacted the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, Disney Cruise Line and Holland America but did not immediately receive a response.

Synergy Marine criminally charged in Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Federal officials announced Tuesday that criminal charges have been brought against the Singaporean operator and an employee of the container ship that downed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge more than two years ago.

The indictment, filed on April 8, accuses Synergy Marine Private Limited, Synergy Maritime Private Limited and technical superintendent Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair, an Indian national, of conspiracy to defraud the United States, misconduct resulting in death and obstruction, among other charges.

Federal officials allege the company improperly “altered” flushing pumps on the Dali container ship to supply fuel to two of the ship’s generators, ultimately causing a second blackout after the ship lost power initially due to a loose wire

“The indictment alleges that if the Dali had been using the proper fuel supply pumps, then the vessel would have regained power in time to safely navigate under the Key Bridge,” U.S. Attorney Kelly Hayes said in a press conference.

The utilization of such flushing pumps is considered a violation of international law, with authorities alleging the company’s operators – including Nair – “knew about the improper use of the flushing pump and the risks that it presented,” Hayes said.

“The indictment further alleges that after the crash, Nair falsely told the National Transportation Safety Board that he was unaware that the Dali was using the flushing pump,” Hayes added.

Investigators found evidence of the pumps being used on three ships – including the Dali – that are operated by the company, officials said.

The development comes after Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Private Limited reached a settlement with the federal government over damages stemming from the ship’s collapse, including disruption to the port and environmental damage. A civil trial is set for the summer.

On March 26, 2024, the Dali was navigating out of Baltimore Harbor when it lost power and struck a support pier, causing it to collapse into the Patapsco River

The collision killed six construction workers who were on the bridge at the time.

“The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge was a preventable tragedy of enormous consequence,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said. “This indictment is a critical step toward holding accountable those whose reckless disregard for maritime safety regulations caused this disaster.”

Rana stars as Bangladesh win first home Test against Pakistan | Cricket News

Five second-innings wickets by Nahid ‌Rana allow Bangladesh to claim a maiden home Test victory against Pakistan in Dhaka.

Pace bowler Nahid Rana has claimed five wickets as Bangladesh have trumped Pakistan by 104 runs in a rain-hit first Test after a thrilling fifth day of batting collapses.

Chasing 268 for victory in Dhaka, Pakistan were 119-3 before they fell to 163 all-out in the final session on Tuesday with debutant Abdullah Fazal scoring a valiant 66.

Bangladesh now hold a 1-0 lead in the two-match home series.

The Test win was Bangladesh’s first against Pakistan on home soil and their third overall.

The 23-year-old Fazal put on 51 runs with Salman Agha, who made 26, to raise Pakistan’s hopes of victory before Rana rattled the opposition with career-best figures of 5-40.

Rana, 23, made an impact with his pace and reverse swing, and his final spell of 4.5 overs got him four wickets for just 10 runs to turn the match on its head.

“Very happy – proud of all the guys, the way we played,” Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said.

“We have been working hard the last few months, and slowly, we are getting better at Test cricket. That’s one thing we have always wanted to do.”

The victory also saw Shanto equal Mushfiqur Rahim’s record of seven Test wins as Bangladesh captain, achieving the milestone in just 17 matches compared with Mushfiqur’s 34.

Shanto’s batting brilliance

Bangladesh came into the final day with a lead of 179 runs at 152-3, but a clutch of wickets made them falter despite Shanto’s 87.

Bangladesh declared their second innings on 240-9 to hand Pakistan a competitive target and a chance for their bowlers to make use of the deteriorating pitch.

Taskin Ahmed took down opener Imam-ul-Haq for two, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled debutant and first-innings centurion Azan Awais for 15.

Rana removed Pakistan captain Shan Masood for two before Fazal and Agha counterattacked in their fourth-wicket partnership, but Bangladesh bowlers proved their mettle on home turf to secure victory in the final session of the day.

Rana delivered the decisive blows. He had Saud Shakeel caught behind before producing the ball of the match – a thunderous 147-kilometre-per-hour (91.3-mile-per-hour) in-swinging yorker that bowled Mohammad Rizwan for 15.

Rana was on a roll as he trapped Noman Ali LBW and then bounced out Shaheen Shah Afridi with Mahmudul Hasan Joy taking a simple catch to complete a famous victory.

Pakistan captain Masood proffered no excuses for his side’s failure to seize key moments in the match.

“In the first innings, with bat and ball, we needed to do better,” he said. “When you have the game in your hands, you have to push the opposition away, but we failed to do that.”

Shanto stood out for his batting brilliance as he made 101 in the first innings to guide Bangladesh to 413.

Pakistan responded with 386 in their first innings but conceded a slender lead after off-spinner Mehidy returned figures of 5-102.

Rain played spoilsport on the third and fourth days of the Test with a few overs lost due to interruptions.

The second match will begin on Saturday in Sylhet.

USMNT captain Tyler Adams says World Cup will unite amid global tensions

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A global spotlight will be shining down on the 2026 FIFA World Cup one month from today, as teams from all over will converge on the United States, Mexico and Canada to begin the highly anticipated tournament on the pitch.

But while the World Cup brings about positivity and friendly competition for billions around the world, real-life problems still exist.

One of those situations is found in the Middle East, as the U.S. and Iran, who also qualified for the World Cup, remain an open conflict. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said Iran “for sure” will play in the World Cup despite the conflict.

Tyler Adams, the U.S. men’s national team’s midfielder and captain, didn’t comment directly about the Middle East conflict, but he knows that despite “crazy” things happening around the world, the game of soccer and the World Cup can be a unifying time for everyone.

“Soccer brings everybody together no matter the situation,” he told Fox News Digital in a recent interview, while also highlighting his partnership and work with Scotts. “That’s something I gravitated towards when I wanted to play the sport. The diversity in it. How whatever country you go to, there’s soccer fields no matter where you are in the world. It’s that one sport that you find everywhere.

FIFA PRESIDENT GIANNI INFANTINO SAYS IRAN WILL ‘FOR SURE’ PLAY IN WORLD CUP DESPITE CONFLICT INVOLVING US

“I think this event is really going to bring people together, and I really hope it brings the American people together as well.”

Adams’ first World Cup came in 2022 when he represented the U.S. alongside his teammates at a very controversial host site of Qatar. From criticism of the country’s human rights violations to death of migrant workers during stadium construction, many accused Qatar of sports washing throughout the tournament.

But Adams believes four years later, no matter what is happening around the world, the World Cup can provide positivity, camaraderie and unity.

“I think that times in the world are obviously crazy right now. When there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world, there’s nothing like a World Cup where people can close their eyes for a second and really experience something special,” he said. “So, again, I think that success we have can really move the needle in how the sport grows in our country and I’m hoping we can do that.”

While the U.S. has never won a World Cup, Adams knows this group is a special one, especially after the experience they had in 2022. They were green in Qatar but now, with a home crowd behind them, Adams is confident his group has what it takes to not just make it out of Group D, but make a run at the trophy.

“I think the balance we have within our squad is so good,” he said. “So many of these guys I grew up with for such a long time now. They’re some of my closest friends, guys I talk to every day. So, at the bare minimum, we’re just going to be excited to hang out together, have the banter in the changing room that we have with one another, and really just enjoy the whole process.”

TRUMP ENVOY ASKS FIFA TO REPLACE IRAN WITH ITALY IN 2026 WORLD CUP: REPORT

The U.S. will kick off its group stage in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium against Paraguay on June 12. Meanwhile, Iran will be playing at the same host site three days later.

“We hope that, by then, of course, the situation will be a peaceful situation,” Infantino said during the CNBC Invest in America Forum last month in Washington, D.C. about the Middle East conflict. “That would definitely help. But Iran has to come, of course. They represent their people. They have qualified. The players want to play.”

Speaking of growing the game, Scotts, North America’s leading lawn care products brand, partnered with Adams with it’s “Keep It Real” initiative, which is aimed at expanding access to youth sports and green space, funding over $432,000 while partnering with “Every Kid Sports to aid over 2,000 kids across 48 states.

As part of the effort, Scotts and Adams, who are spotlighting the value of natural grass in terms of safer play, helped restore natural grass fields where the next generation can grow the game. One of those was even his hometown field.

“When they came to me with this idea and this initiative, it was quite simple. I think one of the biggest things I need to do as a professional athlete now is give back to my community. That being said, I am giving back to my community with the partnership where we did a field day last summer and we’re restoring the field I played on as a kid. It was pretty cool to go back home and see that a brand I’m working with supports the ideas I have and give back to that community. Really, really grateful for that and the partnership. We’re starting to do really good things.”

Plaid Cymru’s Rhun ap Iorwerth voted first minister of Wales | Welsh politics

0

Rhun ap Iorwerth has been voted first minister of Wales after Plaid Cymru’s Senedd electoral victory ended 100 years of Labour hegemony and held off Reform UK.

Ap Iorwerth was confirmed after a plenary vote on Tuesday with the support of the 43 Senedd members of his party and two Greens.

Plaid Cymru ended Labour’s century-long electoral dominance in Wales in last week’s elections, winning the most seats in the newly expanded 96-seat parliament. Reform, which had hoped to be the biggest party, won 34 seats, and Labour came third with just nine seats, marking a definitive end to the party’s grip on its birthplace.

The former Labour first minister Eluned Morgan lost her seat, triggering a leadership contest. Ken Skates, the Senedd member for Fflint Wrecsam and former cabinet secretary for transport, has taken over as interim leader.

Under Wales’s new and more representative electoral system, at least 49 seats are needed for a majority. No party was likely to win that, but Friday’s results put Plaid Cymru in a comfortable position to form a minority government.

Ap Iorwerth previously told the Guardian he would seek out mature cooperation from all opposition parties on a case-by-case basis, and that his administration would press the UK government for extra powers over policy areas such as policing and justice, rather than engaging in political rows with Westminster.

Plaid Cymru has ruled out an independence referendum in the next Senedd term, but the party has repeatedly said it will use its time in government to make the case for an independent Wales.

The Senedd also voted Labour’s deputy leader, Huw Irranca-Davies, as the new Llywydd, or presiding officer, before the first minister vote. Ap Iorwerth is expected to begin appointing cabinet secretaries on Tuesday afternoon.

However, the former Los Angeles Lakers star faced criticism for chiming in on the Los Angeles mayoral race as he lives in Beverly Hills. The town is not one of the 114 neighborhoods who are able to cast votes in the LA mayoral race.

“She’s doing a tremendous job. Mayor Bass has to have a second term and I’m excited to say that,” Johnson said in the video. “Listen, you took on a tough job here and you’ve done a fabulous job and all of us appreciate your effort and what you’re doing and we look forward to helping you continue your mission and the things that you have in store – your vision for the city.”

Bass welcomed the endorsement.

“Magic Johnson has been my friend for over 30 years. His belief in how I’m changing Los Angeles means everything to me,” Bass wrote on X.

“Magic has poured his heart into this city long before anyone asked him to — through investment, through community, through showing up. I am deeply honored to have his endorsement.”

Johnson didn’t mention one of the sticking points that has allowed challenger Spencer Pratt to gain support in the race – Bass’ handling of the 2025 wildfires that led to at least a dozen deaths and billions in damage.

Pratt has continued to needle Bass over her response to the wildfires.

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss appeared to show support for Pratt last month when she donated $1,800 to his mayoral campaign, according to FOX 11 in Los Angeles. It’s the maximum donation allowed by law.

Jeffrey Epstein survivors to return to Palm Beach, Florida, for House hearing | Jeffrey Epstein

0

Survivors of r Jeffrey Epstein will return to the “scene of the crime” in Palm Beach, Florida, on Tuesday for a shadow congressional hearing into abuses committed by the late sex offender.

Several members of the Democratic House oversight caucus are scheduled to join the victims and several expert witnesses at the hearing close to Epstein’s former waterfront mansion where he procured girls as young as 14 to perform sexual services for wealthy guests.

They hope to bring more exposure to a “sweetheart deal” between Florida prosecutors and Epstein in 2008 that allowed him to escape federal charges. They also hope to look into the recruitment of the girls, some allegedly from Donald Trump’s nearby Mar-a-Lago residence.

The scandal, and the release of millions of government documents that have come to be known as the Epstein files, have dogged Trump’s second presidency. One Epstein email released in November stated “of course [Trump] knew about the girls” procured for his sex-trafficking ring, and another that said Trump “spent hours” with one victim at Epstein’s house.

The president has consistently denied any wrongdoing or knowledge of the activities of Epstein, who he said he dropped as a friend years earlier.

Authorities say Epstein took his own life in federal custody in New York in July 2019 awaiting trial of sex trafficking charges.

Tuesday’s gathering is a shadow hearing, and witnesses are not compelled to testify under oath. Democrats have no subpoena power, and there will be no input from Republicans.

But California Democrat Robert Garcia, ranking member of the House oversight committee, said the field hearing was an important step in bringing attention to Epstein’s crimes and supporting his victims.

“Palm Beach is where Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes first came to light, and where prosecutors offered Epstein a sweetheart deal that allowed him to continue his crimes,” a statement by Garcia announcing the hearing said.

“Palm Beach is also home to Mar-a-Lago, president Donald Trump’s primary residence and private club. During the many years of friendship between Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, multiple women were recruited for Epstein from Mar-a-Lago.”

They included Virginia Giuffre, who worked as a spa attendant at Trump’s club at the age of 16 in 2000, when she said she was recruited by Epstein’s associate and “fixer” Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking.

Giuffre was one of the most prominent voices in exposing Epstein, and appeared in an infamous March 2001 photograph with Maxwell and the discredited British former royal Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, whose arm is around the then 17-year-old’s waist.

Giuffre died by suicide in Australia in April 2025, with her family saying at the time: “In the end, the toll of abuse is so heavy that it became unbearable for Virginia to handle its weight.”

Several survivors are expected to speak about their own experiences on Tuesday, at the hearing and a press conference that will follow it.

Democrat Ayanna Pressley, the Massachusetts congress member, arrived in Palm Beach for the hearing on Monday evening, and she posted on Facebook her expectation of the proceedings.

“Just touching down in Palm Beach for a committee field hearing to return to the scene of the crime, where so many young girls were first victims of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell,” she said.

“Of course, this is a fight for the Epstein survivors, but for all survivors. We’re looking to create a blueprint for accountability, to call out the systemic harms and abuses that not only occurred for the Epstein survivors, but are happening right now in communities all across this country.

“A reckoning is on the way.”

The hearing is set to begin at 10am ET and will be streamed live on the YouTube page of the oversight committee Democrats.

The panel has previously been critical of the committee’s Republican majority for refusing to hold formal hearings. It has accused its chair, Kentucky congressman James Comer, of helping the White House to cover up the Epstein scandal.

Comer denies the allegation.

Meanwhile, attorney Jack Scarola, who is representing several of Epstein’s victims, told local media on Monday he was not sure if he would attend.

“If those legislators who are here are really motivated to do something productive, holding another press conference with Epstein victims lined up behind them for another photo opportunity is not going to advance the interests of those survivors,” he told Palm Beach ABC News affiliate WPBF.

“File a bill, work on that legislation, get it passed, and do something substantive that will help avoid a recurrence of the Jeffrey Epstein-Ghislaine Maxwell fiasco.”

Progressive prosecutors blamed for fueling teen takeover chaos in US cities

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

For some time now, we have watched chaos roll through our streets in various forms. Authorities call it “teen takeovers.” Hundreds of young people, rallied by a social media post, flood an area — whether it be the Loop in Chicago or a gas station in Atlanta — and jump on cars, loot stores and attack police. They film it all on their phones as if it were a video game with no real-life consequences.

We all know the obvious: It is a sign that something deep in our culture has broken. That is true, but how? What strikes me is the lack of fear these youths show. That, for me, is the first sign.

When I was a young boy living in the country town of Kenton, Tenn., I feared God. I feared my elders. This was a good fear. It was the fear that kept me on the straight path.

‘NOBODY’S IN CONTROL’ AS CHAOTIC STREET TAKEOVERS TERRORIZE CITIES ACROSS US: CRIME EXPERT

There is none of this fear in these kids and their teen takeovers. It is anarchic, free-for-all chaos. These young people surround police cruisers, throw objects at officers, tackle them, terrorize bystanders and then laugh about it online. That isn’t just bad behavior. That is a generation acting as if there is no God above them, no authority over them and no justice waiting for them.

How do you get to a place where teenagers can look a police officer in the face, attack him and feel nothing? You don’t get there overnight. You get there one broken boundary at a time. You get there when parents stop being parents, when schools stop enforcing discipline, when churches stop preaching about sin and judgment, and when the justice system stops delivering consequences.

Let’s talk about that last one, because that is the least our government can do. Over the last decade, we have seen the rise of a new kind of prosecutor: the so-called progressive prosecutor. They run on platforms promising to decarcerate, go soft on so-called “low-level” offenses and “reimagine” prosecution. They tell us we live in a systemically racist nation and that we must reduce racial disparities in our prison system. They act as if we locked up people only because of their race. White-guilt progressives elect these people into office.

NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR MURDER VICTIMS REMINDS US OF ‘SOFT-ON-CRIME’ POLICIES’ DEADLY CONSEQUENCES

The consequences have been damning. From Chicago to St. Louis, and outward to New York and Los Angeles, there have been fewer prosecutions, fewer charges and fewer juveniles held to account, even for serious crimes. These prosecutors have simply refused to uphold the law and have gone to great lengths to undermine police.

Young people are not stupid. They are watching. They see viral videos of mobs overrunning downtowns and hear that “no serious charges will be filed.” They see repeat juvenile offenders picked up for robberies, carjackings or violent attacks and then released right back onto the street. What message does that send? It says, “You can do this and still sleep in your own bed.”

This laxness, along with a lack of structured discipline in the home and a lack of belief in God, is how you kill fear in a teen. It is how you take a healthy fear of consequences and replace it with a cocky confidence that nothing really happens.

PASTOR SOUNDS ALARM ON ‘GODLESS GENERATION’ AFTER FIGHTING BACK AGAINST TEEN CARJACKER

At the same time, we’ve created what feels like a two-tiered justice system. The ordinary citizen who defends his business may face the full weight of the law, while a mob of teenagers that turns a city block into a war zone is described as “just kids blowing off steam.” The shop owner is treated like the villain; the mob is treated like a sociology project. People may not use legal language, but they feel that imbalance in their bones.

As a pastor, I cannot talk about this without talking about the soul. Law alone cannot fix what is broken here. But when I see young Black teens laughing as they jump on cars, beat strangers or taunt officers, I see hearts that have not been taught to fear anything higher than themselves. No fear of God. No fear of dishonoring their families. No fear of a judge. No fear of wasting their lives.

We have taken away the guardrails and then acted shocked when the car goes off the cliff. We’ve preached entitlement instead of responsibility, therapy instead of repentance, and “root causes” instead of consequences.

OUR LEADERS ABANDONED CHICAGO. TRUMP IS RIGHT: IT’S TIME TO CALL IN THE GUARD

So what needs to change?

First, we must restore the link between crime and consequence. That means electing prosecutors who believe their job is to enforce the law, not erase it from behind a desk, and ending policies that treat violent mob activity as a minor disturbance.

Second, we must stand behind police who act lawfully to restore order. No officer should have to wonder if stopping an out-of-control crowd will cost him his career the next day. When we undermine officers for doing their jobs, we weaken the thin line between our neighborhoods and chaos.

Third, adults — parents, pastors, teachers and coaches — must recover the courage to say, “This is wrong,” and mean it. Teen takeovers are not protests. They are not a phase. They are a moral breakdown. We need to say that plainly, in our homes, our pulpits and our politics. And when parents refuse to intervene, they too should face legal consequences.

The fear I grew up with — fear of God, fear of dishonoring my elders, fear of real consequences — was not a curse. It was a gift. It kept me alive. It got me through college and seminary school. It kept me focused on a future I could be proud of. These kids running wild in teen takeovers have been robbed of that gift.

If we want our streets back, if we want our children back, we have to rebuild a culture where there are lines you do not cross and laws you do not ignore — because if you do, there will be a reckoning. A society without fear of consequences is a society without peace. And if we don’t change course, we are going to learn that the hard way one day, and by then it may be too late.
