Country singer Jo Dee Messina is sharing the harsh criticisms she faced early on in her career.

During a recent interview on “The Bobby Bones Show,” the 55-year-old “Bye Bye” singer shared that she was turned down by a record label when first starting out because of her weight.

“I remember I got turned down by a record label in Nashville. They said I was too fat,” she said. “They told my producer that, ‘Oh, if she was 10 pounds lighter, we’d have signed her.'”

She said she was “devastated” after hearing that, and when asked later if she was able to let go of the critique after making it big in the music industry, Messina said that she hadn’t, noting, “It’s 30 years later, I’m still talking about it. I didn’t let it go.”

While Messina recalled feeling discouraged, she said her sister, who she called her “greatest support,” encouraged her to “just keep going,” telling her, “They say you have to get passed on a thousand times before you get a deal.”

Messina went on to break through in the music world in 1996 with her debut self-titled album, which featured one of the biggest hits of her career, “Heads Carolina, Tails California.” Her success continued with her second album, “I’m Alright,” which went double platinum.

The singer is set to release her first studio album in 12 years, “Bridges,” in the summer, releasing the album’s first single, “Some Bridges,” on Friday. She celebrated the song’s release on Instagram, and her fans could not help but share in her excitement.

“I’m about to be playing this song nonstop because it’s so goooooooodđŸ”„đŸ”„đŸ”„đŸ”„đŸ”„,” one fan wrote in the comments section. Another added, “Ohh how I’ve missed your voice! The song is đŸ”„.”

Her last studio album, “Me,” was released in 2014 and featured songs such as “Peace Sign” and “A Woman’s Rant.”

Messina later announced in September 2017 that she was diagnosed with cancer in an open letter posted to her Facebook account, signed by Team JDM rather than the artist herself.

“As many of you know, Jo Dee is a believer who feels blessed to be surrounded by the love of God — a love that has brought her the inner peace,” the letter read. “On her lowest of low days, she has been able to see God’s hand at work and feel His love as she continues her walk.”

The post continued, “It is because of our Father’s love that she has been able to find the beauty in the days that could have brought her the most fear, gratitude in moments that most would call unfair, and companionship during times she might feel the loneliest.”

After undergoing treatment that fall, Messina announced she was in remission and was back to performing by March 2018.

“I’m to the point where it’s once a year I go in and get checked with the blood work and scans if needed or whatever,” she said on “The Bobby Bones Show.”

Duke and Duchess of Sussex hit back at ‘deranged’ author’s claims in new book | Prince Harry

0

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have launched a scathing attack on a “deranged” author whose new book claims Queen Camilla once told a friend: “Meghan’s brainwashed ‌Harry.”

The royal couple hit out at Tom Bower, the author of Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, criticising his “fixation” on the pair.

Extracts from the book, which is being released later this month, also claim the Prince and Princess of Wales considered Meghan “a threat” as tensions escalated before the Sussexes’ decision to quit Britain for the US.

On Saturday, the Sussexes issued a statement responding to the claims in the book, saying Bower’s “commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation”.

They added: “This is someone who has publicly stated, ‘the monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life,’ language that speaks for itself.

“He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met. Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.”

In extracts released on Friday, the book also appears to suggest Harry was “shocked” by the downfall of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor after revelations about his association with the American financier Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.

“The unpredicted and unimagined humiliation of Andrew shocked Harry,” Bower wrote. “Rightly, Harry fears that the future King William could remove all the Sussexes’ titles and effectively banish him from Britain.”

The book also alleges that Megan told William: “If you don’t mind, get your finger out of my face,” during a teatime reconciliation meeting that had “spun out of control”, held shortly after the Sussexes returned from their honeymoon in 2018.

Bower also writes about the pair’s Netflix deal and appearance at the 2025 Invictus Games, founded by Harry for wounded, injured and sick military personnel and veterans, calling them “the Meghan Games”. He claims that, after the perceived failure of the couple’s deal with the streaming company, “Harry agreed that [Meghan] could star” at the sports tournament.

In an extract, Bower cites two Canadian executives dismissed from the games, who “resented the pushy Sussexes”. They claimed that “Meghan was a distraction from the injured veterans”.

Harry has continued his battle against the media this year. In January, he accused the publisher of the Daily Mail of wanting to drive him “to drugs and drinking” by placing his life under surveillance, as he told the high court that it continued to “come after” him and his wife. Speaking in court on the verge of tears, he said Associated Newspapers Ltd (ANL) had continued to make Meghan’s life “an absolute misery” during his litigation against it.

Before the legal proceeding began, Meghan accused the Daily Mail in December of breaching “clear ethical boundaries” by reporting from the bedside of her estranged father, Thomas Markle, after his claims that he had not received his daughter’s messages. ANL denies all the allegations of wrongdoing.

Obama Foundation seeks 100 unpaid volunteers for $850M center opening

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Obama Foundation is looking for 100 unpaid volunteers to work alongside the former president’s highly paid cronies at the $850 million Obama Presidential Center in Chicago when it opens in June.

Officials are pitching the no-paycheck gigs as rooted in former President Barack Obama’s legacy of civic engagement. The recruitment campaign comes after Fox News Digital reported that the organization’s CEO, former top Obama aide Valerie Jarrett, earned $740,000 in 2024.

Foundation officials told Fox News Digital the volunteers will complement about 300 full- and part-time employees at the long-delayed center, which the organization is promoting as a $3.1 billion economic catalyst for the Windy City’s South Side.

The new program will see 75 to 100 volunteers, known as “ambassadors,” greet and direct visitors around the campus and share information about exhibits at the 22-story museum tower, athletic center and Chicago Public Library branch, among other amenities. It is expected to expand in the future.

The foundation describes the volunteer program as a key component of its mission, saying volunteers represent its values both onsite and in the community.

It is unclear what the salary range for those paid workers will be. However, the foundation’s most recent tax filings provide insight into compensation at the organization’s senior levels.

Federal filings viewed by Fox News Digital show Jarrett earned $740,000 in 2024, 2023 and 2022, while several former Obama White House officials have collected six-figure salaries as foundation executives.

Total salaries and benefits at the foundation climbed from $18.5 million in 2018 to $43.7 million in 2024 as staffing expanded to 337 employees and annual revenue reached nearly $210 million, according to the filings. The foundation’s main office is located in Chicago’s Hyde Park, where it runs leadership and community programs in the U.S. and abroad.

Still, the foundation is looking to have a cohort of unpaid volunteers help out at the new presidential center. It’s common for presidential libraries, museums and nonprofit cultural institutions to employ unpaid volunteers.

“Volunteerism has been central to President Obama’s vision of civic life since his earliest days as a community organizer on Chicago’s South Side,” the foundation said in a press release.

Jarrett, one of the Obamas’ closest advisors, said in a statement that the center will be “a place where the world meets the best of the city of Chicago, and our volunteers will help bring that vision to life every day.”

She became CEO in 2021 and is overseeing development of the 19.3-acre campus in Jackson Park.

The foundation has promoted the center as a catalyst for economic revitalization on Chicago’s South Side, citing $3.1 billion in projected economic activity over 10 years and 5,000 construction jobs tied to the $850 million campus. Those figures come from an economic assessment conducted by Deloitte Consulting LLP.

According to the foundation, more than 50% of construction contracts have been awarded to diverse firms, 33% of the construction workforce has come from South and West Side communities, and 798 residents have enrolled in construction pre-apprenticeship programs.

The center is scheduled to open on Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Other former Obama administration officials have also earned substantial compensation at the foundation in past years, including former White House political director David Simas, who earned more than $600,000 annually while leading the organization from 2017 to 2020, and Adewale Adeyemo, who later became Biden’s deputy Treasury secretary and earned roughly $540,000 during his tenure.

Several other senior leaders with Obama administration ties have earned between roughly $300,000 and $400,000 annually, according to tax filings.

New York lawyer linked to Trump pardon charged with attempted extortion | Brooklyn

0

A New York lobbyist and attorney connected to a presidential pardon issued by Donald Trump in November has been charged with attempting to extort a former client and the client’s son over an alleged $500,000 debt.

Joshua Nass, 34, was arrested on Friday after being charged in federal court in Brooklyn with attempted Hobbs Act extortion. US justice department prosecutors contend that Nass threatened a client for payment that he claimed he was owed for his services.

Nass is alleged to have provided an unnamed individual with a phone number as well as addresses while instructing the individual to visit the client at his home. It was an effort to intimidate the client into paying up, as prosecutors put it.

According to prosecutors, Nass told the individual in question to “do anything and everything” to force to the payment, including “physically assaulting” the client’s son or “forcing him into a car with masked men and threatening him to make someone in [the son’s] family pay Nass”.

It is also alleged that Nass told the individual that he could not be a “human being” with the client’s son if the son rebuffed paying. Nass is alleged to have agreed to pay the individual “at least $15,000 for his continued efforts”.

“As alleged, Nass plotted the violent extortion of one of his own clients and hired an individual to ‘do anything and everything’ to force the client’s son to pay for services,” said a statement from US attorney Joseph Nocella Jr of the eastern district of New York.

FBI assistant director James Barnacle said that “rather than honestly representing his client, Joshua Nass allegedly chose to shake him down by hiring an enforcer to extort payment”.

Nass faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted as charged. He was scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Saturday.

Nass had a role in Trump’s 14 November 2025 pardon of Joseph Schwartz, who had been convicted in Arkansas over his ownership of a nursing-home empire that had failed to pay nearly $40m in employment and payroll taxes – and had been charged with Medicaid fraud.

Neither Schwartz nor his son are mentioned in the government’s press release.

But Nass conspicuously reported in a public filing that he was paid $100,000 toward the end of 2025 “for advocacy concerning executive clemency and post-conviction relief, including federal presidential pardon advocacy and subsequent efforts to obtain expedited parole and state-level relief in Arkansas”.

Separately, in documents pertaining to the extortion case against the attorney, prosecutors allege that the son of Nass’s client facilitated a $100,000 payment out of $600,000 owed for lobbying services.

Earlier in March, the New York Times reported that Schwartz had connected with Trump through Nass and his connections to pro-Israel evangelicals.

Nass told the outlet that “clemency reflects the belief that people are capable of redemption”. Referring to the numerous pardons Trump has issued during his second presidency, Nass added that Trump “has shown a willingness to give deserving individuals a second chance – and he should be commended for such”.

The case against Nass comes amid allegations that Trump’s system of clemency is one shaped by lobbyists, though the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, has rejected that assertion.

“Anyone spending money to lobby for pardons is foolishly wasting their money, and the president doesn’t even know who these so-called ‘lobbyists’ are,” Leavitt told the Times.

Samson was restless after being out of playing-11, then how did he return and become a hero?

Last Updated:

Sanju Samson: Sanju Samson has told that he became restless after being out of the playing-11. This batsman, who led Team India to the title with his explosive batting in the knockout matches of the T20 World Cup, said that his fellow players played an important role in his return to form and comeback in the team.

What did Sanju Samson do when he was out of playing-11?

New Delhi. India opener Sanju Samson said that his desire to meet the needs of the team helped him overcome the hesitation of competing with his own teammates for a place in the playing eleven during the T20 World Cup, which led to many brilliant performances and led the team to victory. Sanju said in ‘India Today Conclave’, ‘I am a person who likes to do good for others rather than doing good for myself. In the series against New Zealand, I was competing with my own teammates for a place in the team and I was not liking it at all. Sanju admitted that he was completely devastated by not getting a place in the playing eleven.

He said, ‘I was very restless because I knew that my dream was very close. But the team was trying different combinations, so I was wondering whether I am in the team or not. Sanju said, ‘I was completely broken because my dream was to win the World Cup. And I was not even in the playing eleven of the team. So I went away from everyone for five-six days and started taking care of myself again.

What did Sanju Samson do when he was out of playing-11?

He said, ‘I started preparing myself, knowing that you never know what the game will throw at you.’ Sanju got this opportunity in India’s Super Eight match against Zimbabwe in Chennai. 31 year old Sanju did not score much runs, but the team management assured that he will be in the playing eleven in the next four matches.

Samson said, ‘I knew that the team management had faith in me. Right from the Zimbabwe match, we had to win four out of four and the team needed me. From then onwards things became positive for me and I became very excited. His fellow opener Abhishek Sharma was a little disappointed that he could not play the innings as expected from him in the World Cup, one reason for this was stomach infection. But this left-handed batsman scored an important half-century in the final and was very happy to contribute to the team’s victory. Sanju said, ‘From the day I started playing cricket, I had only one dream to play for the country. And when you play for the country, the biggest dream is to win the ICC trophy for your country.

He said, ‘The start was not what I wanted, but still I was happy because the team was doing well and we were winning matches.’ He said, ‘My dream was to become world champion one day. It is not just about one trophy, but it is about how many trophies I can win for my country. I play with this mindset. Abhishek said that he enjoyed batting with Sanju in the top order. He said, ‘Sanju Bhai is a very intelligent person. He is a very loving and caring person. When you have such players in your team, you feel that there is someone who is standing behind you. Sanju Samson has always been like this for us.

Kurt Russell’s son Wyatt leads successful Hollywood career after hockey

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Kurt Russell never expected his son Wyatt to follow him into the family business, but he couldn’t be more grateful that he did.

The father-and-son pair play the same person in the Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” Wyatt, 39, is the only child of Russell, 74, and his longtime partner, actress Goldie Hawn.

Many of the couple’s other children from past relationships and other family members are actors, including Russell’s stepchildren, Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson.

Our family has a lot of actors in it, and we all enjoy watching each other,” Russell told Fox News Digital. “In Wyatt’s case? We always knew that Wyatt was a really good actor.”

“He was a hockey player, and he was focused on hockey,” the star shared. “And I had been focused on baseball in a very similar fashion. And when his professional days were over in hockey, I was glad to see that he went into this because I felt he was going to find a lot of success with it. And it is nice to watch that success.”

After an injury caused Wyatt’s professional hockey career to come to an end in his mid-20s, he leaped to the big screen, People magazine reported. He went on to star in several TV shows and films before landing a lead role in “Monarch” alongside his father.

Russell was thrilled to see his son embrace the craft with real dedication. Wyatt had set out to build a career on his own terms.

“He’s done a great job with his agent, picking things that interest him as an actor,” Russell said. “And he’s very confident. He likes to explore.”

“As an actor, I am happy for him, but I am happy for me. I get to watch it,” he added.

Growing up on set, Wyatt felt completely at ease. This was no different. For Wyatt, he enjoyed watching his castmates interact with his dad while bringing the story to life.

“I was really enjoying watching other people who hadn’t worked with him before see his hard work and energy and excitement for the project,” he recalled. “Those are all things that I knew he was like, and it was just really fun to see other people see that too. And it also … feels sometimes like, “Oh s—, I’ve got to catch up.’ That was fun to watch.”

Wyatt’s right — Russell has been having a blast taking on monsters.

“Monarch” follows two half-siblings (Anna Sawai and Ren Watabe) as they unravel their family’s connection to Monarch, a secretive organization that tracks giant creatures around the world. Those missions often put them directly in the path of the Titans. Russell and Wyatt play Army officer Lee Shaw across two different timelines.

“I don’t know who is surviving them [but] trying to figure out how to live with them maybe is, I think, the crux of what makes these people operate from the point of view that they operate from,” Russell explained.

“What’s fun about this show? It doesn’t treat [monsters] like the movies do. It treats it [like this could really happen]. What if this happened [in real life]? I certainly felt that. Other than the opportunity to work with Wyatt playing the same character, that’s what drew me to this project.”

Reform UK government would replace top civil servants with policy ‘believers’ | Reform UK

0

A Reform UK government would expect to dismiss the top civil servant in every government department and replace them with people seen as more likely to implement the party’s priorities, the Guardian has learned.

Senior Reform figures have concluded that the current crop of permanent secretaries, the lead civil servant in each department, are not up to the necessary standard. Some would be replaced by outsiders, and others by existing officials viewed as more suitable.

The plan has prompted warnings that a shift towards a less stable and more politicised civil service could result in the loss of significant expertise and of institutional memory, and would make government less effective.

Nigel Farage’s party has promised it will enact a radical programme. One senior member said this would be modelled on the second Trump administration, with a focus on making change via executive orders rather than legislation, where possible.

Reform has already said it would look at appointing outside experts to become ministers. It is understood that as well as making some into peers, so they could sit in the House of Lords, others considered for ministerial jobs would be lined up for winnable Commons seats.

While the party has received a series of big donations in recent months, including ÂŁ12m from the crypto investor Christopher Harborne, it is expected that donors would be ruled out for ministerial roles.

The influx of money has allowed Reform to expand its teams working on new policies and preparation for government. This process thus far has had limited input from Farage, with insiders saying the party leader is focusing on May’s elections across England, Scotland and Wales.

A number of other countries have senior officials who are politicised and change with governments, notably the US. In the UK, existing rules allow ministers to fast-track outsiders into the civil service as “exceptional appointments” on two-year terms.

But unions and experts said Reform’s plans risked hampering the work of ministers rather than improving it.

“An ideological purge does not make for good government,” said Dave Penman, the general secretary of the FDA, the union for senior civil servants. “You would lose experience and institutional memory, but you would also send a message to the rest of the civil service that they are not trusted.

“Every civil servant knows they have to serve the government of the day. It’s absolutely clear – you serve or you go. There is no real evidence that the civil service would get in the way.

“How do you expect to bring in the brightest and the best if you then throw them under a bus? This would attract believers, but not necessarily the best people. And it shouldn’t be about what people believe. It’s about what they can do.

“Another problem is that as soon as you have political picks, when you change the minister they will want their own pick as well. In the last 10 years we have had whole football teams of secretaries of state. If you changed the permanent secretary every time, it would be a massive churn, and very disruptive.”

Alex Thomas, from the Institute for Government thinktank, said there was an obvious argument for civil servants to be set a clear direction.

He went on: “The question is what is effective. A blanket dismissal of the whole of the top of civil service would be removing an enormous amount of experience, expertise, and knowledge of how to make government do its job.

“If the intent is shock and awe, I would be surprised if it works. The history of government reform shows that people who succeed are those who galvanise, find allies and work with the system, rather than going to war with it.”

Reform UK was contacted for comment.

Variety writer slams Colbert’s final season as celebrity-fueled ego trip

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The final season of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” was ripped as “not very good TV” and out of touch with everyday Americans as the host has been flattered by a parade of celebrities in a column, Thursday, from entertainment outlet Variety.

CBS announced in July that it had canceled “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and that it would officially go off the air in May 2026. Liberal critics have accused CBS and Paramount of ending the show to appease President Donald Trump and receive approval for a long-planned merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media.

Since then, there has been a variety of celebrities reading poetry or literally singing Colbert’s praises as he prepared to bid goodbye to his show, as noted in Daniel D’Addario’s piece, “Stephen Colbert’s Long ‘Late Show’ Goodbye Has Gone From Resistance to Ego Trip.”

“What has ended up making it to air has been an increasingly puffy tribute to the show’s own host. The endless bouquets being tossed Colbert’s way have started to make the studio smell a bit cloying,” he wrote, noting various recent guest appearances such as actor John Lithgow reading a poem toasting Colbert, song tributes from Bette Midler and Jimmy Fallon, and actress Drew Barrymore recreating her famous striptease from years before on another show to reveal a t-shirt saying, “We [Heart] Stephen.”

“The show’s focus on its own host’s misfortune has become outsized and a bit dramatic, especially because so many other institutions are in crisis: With everything else going on in the world, we have to go through a monthslong celebration-of-life for a comedian whose job is coming to an end?” D’Addario wrote.

STEPHEN COLBERT REVEALS WHETHER HE’D RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2028

Bette Midler and Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert’s career has been hailed by a parade of celebrity guests in his final season on his current show, such as Bette Midler.  (Screenshot/CBS)

“Colbert deserved better treatment from CBS, but watching one person beam while receiving laurel after laurel doesn’t make the argument for his show’s relevance, as it’s frankly not very good TV, and — for this relentlessly political host — not in touch with the concerns of people who have been turning to ‘The Late Show’ for its political perspective,” the writer argued.

In one final barb, the author suggested that while Colbert’s public-facing career is likely far from over, “When that day comes, won’t it feel like an anticlimax, after we’ve already spent the better part of a year celebrating him?” D’Addario asked.

When reached for comment, Christian Toto, host of the “Hollywood in Toto” podcast, responded to the opinion piece by saying it “stunned me.”

He added, “It’s possible that stories like this are meant to warn Colbert that he’s hurting his legacy and future impact, allowing him to course correct before it’s too late. Variety, like most entertainment news outlets, leans aggressively to the Left. Criticizing Colbert like this is a no-no on that front.”
