The Detroit Tigers reportedly added some firepower to its rotation on Wednesday night.

The Tigers and free-agent pitcher Framber Valdez agreed to a three-year deal worth $115 million, according to multiple reports. Valdez will join a rotation that already included two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal.

Valdez, a World Series champion with the Houston Astros in 2022, spent his entire career with the American League West team for the first eight years of his career. He appeared in 31 games during the 2025 season, recorded a 3.66 ERA and struck out 187 batters.

Since making his major league debut in 2018, he is 81-52 with a 3.36 ERA. He’s averaged more than 191 innings pitched over the last four seasons, joining San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb as the only two pitchers to throw at least 175 innings each of those years.

He also has a no-hitter under his belt. He completed the feat against the Cleveland Guardians in 2023 and nearly did it against the Texas Rangers in 2024.

Valdez rejected a $22.025 million qualifying offer from the Astros in November. Houston will receive a compensatory pick after the fourth round of the upcoming MLB Draft.

The Tigers are expected to learn the result of Skubal’s arbitration hearing on Thursday. He filed for $32 million with Detroit countering $19 million.

Italy’s foreign minister says the country has already started swatting away cyberattacks from Russia targeting the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

Antonio Tajani told reporters on Wednesday that a series of cyberattacks targeted some of the government’s foreign offices, including the one in the US capital.

He said they were “of Russian origin,” but did not specify whether this appeared to be state-backed activity, nor provide details about the nature of the attacks, AP reported.

“We prevented a series of cyberattacks against foreign ministry sites, starting with Washington, and also involving some Winter Olympics sites, including hotels in Cortina,” he said.

Tajani’s comments follow a warning from the UK’s cybersecurity agency not to underestimate pro-Russia hacktivists, and although it was issued in the context of attacks on UK critical infrastructure, Russia and those aligned to it have a long history of targeting the Summer and Winter Games.

Since it hosted the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, an event Russia hoped it could use a political springboard, the UK, US, and others have formally attributed several cyberattacks against the events in the years that followed to Russia.

These included various attacks on the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang and disinformation campaigns surrounding the Paris Games in 2024.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned Russia from competing in the Games in 2017 following a doping scandal involving a number of its athletes, and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned it from all international sporting events in 2019.

That WADA sanction was due to be lifted after the 2022 Beijing Games, but Russia then invaded Ukraine, leading the IOC to impose an indefinite ban on Russian athletes.

Thirteen Russians will compete in Milano Cortina, but they must do so as independents – they cannot fly the Russian flag.

For decades, Russia has used sporting events, especially the Olympics, for political gain. From the 1950s onward, many believe that Russia saw the Games as a means to assert the value of socialism, with the rivalry between the USSR and the capitalist US pervading most major events for three decades.

Milano Cortina officially begins on February 6, although the Games’ events kicked off on February 4 with a four-fixture curling mixed doubles session in which Sweden, Great Britain, Canada, and Switzerland prevailed. ®

A man has lost his life in Portugal after floodwaters engulfed his car, and in Spain, a girl has been reported missing after being swept away by a river as Storm Leonardo has battered the Iberian Peninsula with torrential rain and gale-force winds.

Leonardo is the latest in a wave of half a dozen storms to sweep across Portugal and Spain this year, causing several fatalities, destroying infrastructure and leaving thousands of homes without power.

Portuguese authorities confirmed on Wednesday that a 70-year-old man died in the southern region of Alentejo after floodwaters swept his vehicle off a road near a dam.

In southern Spain’s Malaga province, a girl remains missing after she was dragged away by the Turvilla River in Sayalonga while trying to rescue her dog. The animal reportedly managed to reach safety, and emergency teams resumed the search for the girl at first light on Thursday, according to local and national news reports.

“We spent the whole afternoon and night yesterday searching in the river from the place where the girl fell in until the very end of the river. We found the dog, but not her,” Malaga fire chief Manuel Marmolejo said on Spanish television on Thursday.

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency has warned that Storm Marta, the next front in the ongoing “storm train”, is expected to reach the region this weekend.

Portuguese Economy Minister Manuel Castro Almeida stated that reconstruction efforts after Storm Kristin alone may exceed 4 billion euros ($4.7bn).

In Alcacer do Sal in southern Portugal, residents were forced to wade through waist-deep water after the Sado River breached its banks following a series of storms. Restaurant terraces were submerged, and shopkeepers and homeowners used stacked sandbags in an attempt to protect their properties from the rising floodwaters.

“I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s surreal,” resident Maria Cadacha told the Reuters news agency. “There are a lot of people here, very good people, many shopkeepers, homes with damage. I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes.”

Andalusia’s emergency services reported attending to more than a million incidents by midnight on Wednesday.

Antonio Sanz, head of the regional government’s interior department, confirmed that 14 rivers and 10 dams were at “extreme” risk of overflowing due to the severe conditions.

In Portugal, the National Civil Protection authority registered at least 70 incidents by early Thursday as the region continued to monitor the impact of the storm.

Autism rates are ‘more or less equal for men and women’, according to a study which challenges previous assumptions about its prevalence.

While the neurological and developmental ⁠condition is known to be more common in young boys, Swedish researchers found there was a big rise in diagnoses among adolescent girls.

And by the age of 20, the male-to-female ratio had evened out at nearly one-to-one, experts at the Karolinska Institutet reported.

Researchers said the study, published in ​the BMJ, highlights a need to investigate why girls and women receive diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) later than boys and men.

Previous work on gender and autism suggested that for every four men or boys diagnosed with autism, there would be one woman or girl.

A study in 2017 suggested this figure may be closer to three men to one woman.

But in the latest research from Sweden, academics examined diagnosis rates of autism for all people born in the country between 1985 and 2000 – more than 2.7 million people – and tracked them until 2022.

During this period, some 2.8% of people were diagnosed with ASD.

They found that the male-to-female ratio of diagnosis decreased over time to the extent that it “may no longer be distinguishable by adulthood”.

The study did not account for genetics or environmental factors or for other conditions associated with autism, such as attention deficit hyperactivity ‌disorder and intellectual disability, which might have played a role in ⁠patients’ diagnoses.

Commenting on the study, Dr Rachel Moseley from Bournemouth University, said the findings provide “important support ‍for what autism researchers have known for a long time” about a substantial gap in diagnosing autism in females.

She added that studies of children may miss autistic features which are already present in males but not yet visible in females.

The high male-to-female ratio has also ​been attributed to better social and communication skills among girls, making autism more difficult to spot.

Dr Judith Brown, from the National Autistic Society, said “women and girls are more likely to ‘mask’ what is traditionally thought of as signs of autism, making it harder to identify the challenges they face”.

She added that the results “highlight the fact that gender should never be a barrier to receiving an autism diagnosis and access to the right support”.

Both Beijing and Moscow expressed their regret at the lapse of the last Russia-US nuclear arms control treaty.

The Kremlin says Russia will continue to be a responsible nuclear power, despite the expiry of the last nuclear arms control treaty between Moscow and Washington, which experts say risks ushering in a new global arms race.

The New START treaty expires on Thursday, marking the end of more than half a century of limits on the United States and Russia’s strategic nuclear weapons.

“Today the day will end, and it [the treaty] will cease to have any effect,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday. Arms control experts had previously said their assumption was that it expired at the end of Wednesday.

Russia had suggested both sides voluntarily extend the terms of the agreement for one year to provide time to discuss a successor treaty, a proposal which it said US President Donald Trump had never formally answered.

“The agreement is coming to an end. We view this negatively and express our regret,” said Peskov, who said the matter had come up in a call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping a day earlier.

“What happens next depends on how events unfold. In any case, the Russian Federation will maintain its responsible and attentive approach to the issue of strategic stability in the field of nuclear weapons and, of course, as always, will be guided first and foremost by its national interests.”

New START, first signed in Prague in 2010 by then presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, limited each side’s nuclear arsenal to 1,550 deployed strategic warheads – a reduction of nearly 30 percent from the previous limit set in 2002.

Deployed weapons or warheads are those in active service and available for rapid use as opposed to those in storage or awaiting dismantlement.

It also allowed each side to conduct on-site inspections of the other’s nuclear arsenal, although these were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and have not resumed since.

‘China will not participate in disarmament negotiations’

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs joined a growing international chorus expressing regret over the treaty’s expiry.

“China regrets the expiration of the New START treaty, as the treaty is of great significance to maintaining global strategic stability,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Thursday.

“The international community is generally concerned that the expiration of the treaty will have a negative impact on the international nuclear arms control system and the global nuclear order.”

Trump has said he wants a better deal that will also bring in China. But Beijing refuses to negotiate with the other two countries because it has only a fraction of their warhead numbers – an estimated 600, compared with about 4,000 each for Russia and the US.

Lin reiterated this point, adding that China would not be joining the bilateral arms‑reduction talks.

“China’s nuclear forces are not on the same level as those of the United States and Russia, and China will not participate in disarmament negotiations at this stage,” Lin said.

Russia and the US together control more than 80 percent of the world’s nuclear warheads.

China’s nuclear arsenal, however, is growing faster than any country’s, by about 100 new warheads a year since 2023, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

China is estimated to have at least 600 nuclear warheads, SIPRI says – well below the 800 each at which Russia and the US were capped under New START.

The White House said this week that Trump would decide the way forward on nuclear arms control, which he would “clarify on his own timeline”.

A NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, called on the US and Russia to act with “responsibility and restraint” to maintain “global security”.

The official added that Russia and China were both ramping up their nuclear capabilities and that NATO “will continue to take steps necessary” to ensure its own defences.

Taiwan shares a “rock solid” relationship with the United States, its president has insisted – despite talks between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping over the self-governed island’s future.

During a phone call on Wednesday, Mr Xi warned his American counterpart to be “prudent” about giving arms to Taiwan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry claimed.

Last December, the US announced it would ship more than $11.1bn of weapons to the island – its largest package ever.

“The Taiwan-US relationship is rock solid, and all cooperation projects will continue uninterrupted,” Taiwan President Lai Ching-te told reporters during a visit to textile merchants in western Taiwan.

Taiwan is a self-governing island that China claims as its own and is willing to use force to reclaim, prompting fears of a future invasion.

Beijing even prohibits all countries with which it has diplomatic relations, including the US, from having formal ties with Taipei.

It means the US does not recognise Taiwan as a nation state – but still remains its biggest backer.

After Mr Trump and Mr Xi’s phone call, the Chinese foreign ministry shared a readout of the conversation.

It said: “President Xi emphasised that the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China – US relations. Taiwan is China’s territory.

“China must safeguard its own sovereignty and territorial integrity, and will never allow Taiwan to be separated.

“The US must handle the issue of arms sales to Taiwan with prudence.”

For his own part, Mr Trump took to Truth Social to celebrate the successful call – but made no mention of China’s firm words on Taiwan.

He said: “The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is an extremely good one, and we both realise how important it is to keep it that way.”

The $11.1bn arms shipment announced in December is not over the line yet, having still not been approved by Congress.

There has also been significant pushback to the deal from within China, which conducted military drills around Taiwan in response.

A police helicopter responding to an active shooter in Flagstaff, Arizona, crashed Wednesday night, killing both the pilot and a trooper-paramedic on board, officials said.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Ranger helicopter was providing tactical air support to the Flagstaff Police Department and other law enforcement agencies during the incident when it went down, AZDPS spokesperson Sgt. Kameron Lee said.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the pilot and paramedic.

Before the crash, officers on the ground exchanged gunfire with the shooting suspect.

The suspect was wounded but survived, and he was taken into custody. Authorities have yet to release his identity or provide details about the circumstances of the shooting.

No additional injuries were reported from the shooting scene.

AZDPS said its Major Incident Division will lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

Data breach at fintech firm Betterment exposes 1.4 million accounts

Hackers stole email addresses and other personal information from 1.4 million accounts after breaching the systems of automated investment platform Betterment in January.

Betterment provides a mix of automated investment tools and financial advisory services and is considered a pioneer in the U.S. “robo-advisory” sector. In total, the fintech firm manages $65 billion in assets for more than one million customers.

While Betterment has not disclosed the total number of affected individuals, data breach notification service Have I Been Pwned analyzed the stolen data and said the breach exposed 1,435,174 accounts, including email addresses, names, and geographic location data.

The compromised information also includes dates of birth, physical addresses, phone numbers, device information, employers’ geographic locations, and job titles.

Betterment disclosed on January 10 that the threat actors also sent fraudulent emails disguised as a company promotion after gaining access to some of its systems in a social engineering attack, attempting to lure targeted customers into a reward scam that claimed to triple the amount of cryptocurrency sent to attacker-controlled Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets.

“This is not a real offer and should be disregarded. If you clicked on the offer notification, it did not compromise the security of your Betterment account,” Betterment warned. “The unauthorized access has been removed, and at this time we have no indication that the unauthorized individual had any access to Betterment customer accounts.”

After BleepingComputer reported on January 13 that Betterment was under a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack and was being extorted, the company confirmed that intermittent website and mobile app outages were due to a DDoS attack, but has yet to share any information on the extortion attempt.

Earlier this week, Betterment issued another statement saying that a follow-up forensic investigation, conducted in collaboration with the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, found that no customer accounts were compromised in the breach.

“Our forensic investigation, supported by the cybersecurity firm, CrowdStrike, has confirmed that no customer accounts, passwords, or login information were compromised as part of the January 9 incident,” the company said.

“Our analysis continues to indicate that the primary privacy impact involved certain customer contact information, including names and emails. In a subset of cases, contact information was coupled with other customer information, such as physical addresses, phone numbers, or birthdates.”

A Betterment spokesperson has yet to reply after BleepingComputer reached out with questions after the incident.
