Margot Robbie says she got an unwelcome lesson in Hollywood standards early on.

The lesson came in the form of a book about eating less, handed to her by a male co-star. For Robbie, the incident left a strong impression on her as an aspiring actress. She didn’t bother to sugarcoat how she felt while recalling the interaction during an interview with Charlie XCX for Complex.

“Very, very early in my career, an actor I worked with, a male actor, gave me a book called ‘Why French Women Don’t Get Fat,’ and it was essentially a book telling you to eat less,” she said.

“And I was like, ‘Whoa, f— you, dude,'” she said of her reaction.

Robbie, 35, clarified that she doesn’t even know where the guy would be now as the moment occurred “really back in the day.”

“Your career’s over, babe,” Charli XCX jokingly added.

“He essentially gave me a book to let me know that I should lose weight,” the “Barbie” star said. “I was like, ‘Wow.'”

‘Unsustainable’ gaps in policing of franchise businesses must end, MPs say | Small business

0

The UK government needs to eradicate “unsustainable” gaps in the policing of franchise businesses after a series of scandals to hit the sector, a parliamentary committee has found.

The conclusion forms part of the business and trade committee’s small business strategy report and follows a Guardian investigation in December which revealed claims that Adrian Howe, a former Vodafone employee who had agreed to become a franchisee in 2018, drowned after becoming convinced his deal with the multinational company would prove financially disastrous.

The cross-party committee highlighted further allegations from Vodafone franchisees of an imbalance of power in their agreements, which prompted them to launch a high court claim in December 2024. Vodafone is contesting the claim.

The MPs also raised separate allegations of “widespread sexual harassment and abuse in McDonald’s restaurants” and how franchisors could “fail to maintain adequate oversight of their franchisees’ employment practices”.

“Gaps in the oversight of franchise agreements allow serious employment abuses to go unaddressed and leave franchisees exposed to unfair contractual practices,” the committee concluded.

“The absence of a dedicated regulatory framework or clear accountability for employment standards within franchise networks is no longer sustainable.”

The committee added to calls for new legislation in the sector by recommending that the government consider the “introduction of a statutory code of conduct, alongside stronger independent enforcement mechanisms”.

The wide-ranging report also identified “key pressures” on small businesses including “an average of 38 stores closed each day on Great Britain’s high streets”; evidence that UK small businesses were owed £112bn in unpaid invoices by the end of 2024; and estimates by the British Retail Consortium that the autumn budget added £7bn to the cumulative cost of policy and regulation affecting retail.

The committee concluded that business rates should be replaced with a fairer system that “reflects a firm’s ability to pay”, while the late payment crisis could be ended by introducing “stronger, enforceable measures … including mandatory transparency to change behaviour across supply chains”.

The committee chair, Liam Byrne, said: “The evidence we heard during this inquiry was stark. Many small businesses are now operating under pressures comparable to those experienced during the Covid pandemic but this time without an emergency support framework in place.

“SMEs [small and medium-sized enterprises] are facing late payments, rising energy costs, increasing crime, a complex tax system and barriers to growth that are compounding rather than easing.

“These pressures are not isolated; together they pose a real risk to business viability, high streets and economic growth.

“High streets do not die by accident. If the government is serious about growth, it must set out a more coherent and ambitious plan for the businesses that make up so much of the UK economy.”

A spokesperson for McDonald’s said franchisees were held to account on a regular basis through newly strengthened review processes.

They said the company “reserves the right to take appropriate action, including the termination of a relationship, if a franchisee fails to deliver on our standards and expectations”.

They added: “Franchisees have a contractual obligation to comply with all applicable laws and regulations and comply with all additional standards set by McDonald’s.”

Vodafone has previously said that it did not push Howe into agreeing to take on any poorly performing stores.

We are powerful in data: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi said in his address that I want to tell the House that the strength of the sectors is our own people. 1.4 billion people are brilliant, energetic, intelligent. They can challenge anyone. But it’s not just people. We also have a large pool of data. Everyone talks about AI, but talking about AI is like talking about an engine, it is also important to talk about its petrol i.e. data. That means if you do not have petrol data, then AI is also useless. At present the world has two pools of data – the data pool of India (of 1.4 billion people) and China (there is also the same population). That means we are powerful in terms of data.

The point of the economic survey is correct. At the center of it all is the time of AI. Everyone is saying that we are going into the time of AI. New Linux botnet SSHStalker uses old-school IRC for C2 comms

New Linux botnet SSHStalker uses old-school IRC for C2 comms

A newly documented Linux botnet named SSHStalker is using the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) communication protocol for command-and-control (C2) operations.

The protocol was invented in 1988, and its adoption peaked during the 1990s, becoming the main text-based instant messaging solution for group and private communication.

Technical communities still appreciate it for its implementation simplicity, interoperability, low bandwidth requirements, and no need for a GUI.

Wiz

The SSHStalker botnet relies on classic IRC mechanics such as multiple C-based bots and multi-server/channel redundancy instead of modern C2 frameworks, prioritizing resilience, scale, and low cost over stealth and technical novelty.

According to researchers at threat intelligence company Flare, this approach extends to other characteristics of SSHStalker’s operation, like using noisy SSH scans, one-minute cron jobs, and a large back-catalog of 15-year old CVEs.

“What we actually found was a loud, stitched-together botnet kit that mixes old-school IRC control, compiling binaries on hosts, mass SSH compromise, and cron-based persistence. In other words scale-first operation that favors reliability over stealth,” Flare says.

SSHStalker achieves initial access through automated SSH scanning and brute forcing, using a Go binary that masquerades as the popular open-source network discovery utility nmap.

Compromised hosts are then used to scan for additional SSH targets, which resembles a worm-like propagation mechanism for the botnet.

Flare found a file with results from nearly 7,000 bot scans, all from January, and focused mostly on cloud hosting providers in Oracle Cloud infrastructure.

Once SSHStalker infects a host, it downloads the GCC tool for compiling payloads on the victim device for better portability and evasion.

The first payloads are C-based IRC bots with hard-coded C2 servers and channels, which enroll the new victim in the botnet’s IRC infrastructure.

Next, the malware fetches archives named GS and bootbou, which contain bot variants for orchestration and execution sequencing.

Persistence is achieved via cron jobs that run every 60 seconds, invoking a watchdog-style update mechanism that checks whether the main bot process is running and relaunches it if it is terminated.

The botnet also contains exploits for 16 CVEs targeting Linux kernel versions from the 2009-2010 era. This is used to escalate privileges after the earlier brute-forcing step grants access to a low-privileged user.

Attack chain overview
Attack chain overview
Source: Flare

Regarding monetization, Flare noticed that the botnet performs AWS key harvesting and website scanning. It also includes cryptomining kits such as the high-performance Ethereum miner PhoenixMiner.

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) capabilities are also present, though the researchers noted they have not yet observed any such attacks. In fact, SSHStalker’s bots currently just connect to the C2 and then enter an idle state, suggesting testing or access hoarding for now.

Flare has not attributed SSHStalker to a particular threat group, though it noted similarities with the Outlaw/Maxlas botnet ecosystem and various Romanian indicators.

The threat intelligence company suggests placing monitoring solutions for compiler installation and execution on production servers, and alerts for IRC-style outbound connections. Cron jobs with short execution cycles from unusual paths are also big red flags.

Mitigation recommendations include disabling SSH password authentication, removing compilers from production images, enforcing egress filtering, and restricting execution from ‘/dev/shm.’

Modern IT infrastructure moves faster than manual workflows can handle.

In this new Tines guide, learn how your team can reduce hidden manual delays, improve reliability through automated response, and build and scale intelligent workflows on top of tools you already use.

Gray wolf appears in Los Angeles county for first time in more than 100 years | Los Angeles

0

A gray wolf wandered into Los Angeles county for the first time in more than a century on Saturday morning.

“This is the most southern verified record of a gray wolf in modern times,” Axel Hunnicutt, gray wolf coordinator for the California department of fish and wildlife, said.

The three-year-old black coat female, known as BEY03F, crossed into LA county around 6am on 7 February. Born in 2023 in Plumas county in the Beyem Seyo pack, she “traversed nearly the entire range of the Sierra Nevada mountains”, probably in search of a mate, said Hunnicutt. Wildlife officials have been able to track her location because BEY03F was fitted with a GPS collar in May 2025 while passing through Tulare county. To date, California fish and wildlife has not received any reports or sightings from the Los Angeles county public.

On Tuesday, she was traveling further north, “likely deterred by the Interstate 5”, said Hunnicutt. Vehicle strikes are a leading cause of death for wolves.

“It’s possible she may continue to travel hundreds of miles in search of a mate or she may come across a male tomorrow.”

The continental United States was historically home to thousands of gray wolves, but hunters and trappers extirpated the species, with the last wild wolf in California shot in 1924. In 1973, the population was protected by the Endangered Species Act and later reintroduced to Yellowstone national park in the 1990s. Those wolves eventually dispersed across the lower 48 states, with the first wolf crossing into California in 2011. By 2024, the California department of fish and wildlife estimated that there were at least 70 gray wolves in the state, up from 44 the year before.

“Just over 30 years ago, gray wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone national park and central Idaho. The wolves in California are [descendants] of these animals and made their way to California because of wolves doing what BEY03F is doing now: being an explorer,” said Hunnicutt. “Each year, we see continued successful reproduction and expansion of packs into new areas. This is driven by this dispersal movement.”

Although conservationists heralded BEY03F’s arrival in LA county as a win for wildlife, advocates are still trying to shore up protections for gray wolves nationwide.

On 10 February, the Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s refusal to develop a national gray wolf recovery plan. In 2024, the Biden administration’s Fish and Wildlife Service announced that it would develop a national recovery plan for the species, but in 2025 the service published a finding saying it would no longer prepare an updated recovery plan, calling the gray wolf’s listing under the Endangered Species Act “no longer appropriate”.

Democrats compare ICE agents to Nazis in fiery House hearing

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Democratic lawmakers compared Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to Nazis and the Gestapo during a heated House Homeland Security Committee hearing Tuesday, as the agency’s acting director faced sharp questioning over enforcement tactics and accountability.

The exchange turned explosive when Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., pressed ICE acting director Todd Lyons on whether agents have been asking people on the streets to show proof of U.S. citizenship, citing reports claiming that American citizens have allegedly been questioned during immigration enforcement actions.

Goldman escalated the line of questioning by invoking historical comparisons, asking pointedly, “Is Nazi Germany one?” after Lyons acknowledged that “very nefarious regimes” had required proof of citizenship. Goldman also pressed Lyons on whether the Soviet Union employed similar tactics.

Lyons pushed back, calling the comparison inappropriate and “the wrong type of questioning,” before snapping, saying, “The Holocaust Museum is on 14th Street and Independence. If you want to go see Nazis, that’s where it is.”

Goldman reclaimed his time and accused ICE leadership of having it “backwards,” arguing that public criticism of the agency stemmed from its own conduct.

“People are simply making valid observations about your tactics, which are un-American and outright fascist,” Goldman said. “So I have a simple suggestion. If you don’t want to be called a fascist regime or secret police, then stop acting like one.”

Goldman’s questioning followed Lyons’ own testimony earlier in the hearing, in which the ICE acting director said agents have been labeled “Gestapo or secret police” by elected officials and activists. Lyons tied that rhetoric to what he described as a sharp rise in threats and assaults against ICE personnel, saying it has endangered agents and their families.

Nazi references surfaced elsewhere during the hearing as well. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., cited “Greg Bovino, who styled himself in Nazi attire,” while criticizing federal immigration operations in Minnesota and the use of masked agents during recent enforcement actions.

The hearing focused on oversight of the Department of Homeland Security and its immigration enforcement agencies amid questions about the limited use of body cameras, particularly following the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last month.

Lawmakers raised concerns about agents operating in masks or unmarked gear, whether encounters involving U.S. citizens are being adequately documented and whether the lack of body-camera footage has hindered transparency and accountability in recent use-of-force incidents.

Under questioning, Lyons acknowledged that only a fraction of ICE agents are currently equipped with body cameras, as lawmakers pressed the agency to expand their use and release footage to the public.

Palestine urges ‘powerful partners’ to stop Israel’s West Bank ‘annexation’ | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Organisation of Islamic Cooperation tells UN that Israeli push to deepen control of the occupied Palestinian territory fuels ‘violence’ in the region.

Palestine’s envoy to the United Nations has called on the international community to stop Israel’s recent moves to cement control over the occupied West Bank, which he said amounts to “the annexation of the land of the Palestinian people”.

Flanked by representatives of Arab and Muslim-majority nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour told reporters at the UN’s headquarters in New York on Tuesday that Palestinians are “mobilising” diplomatically against the “illegal” Israeli effort.

“We hope and expect that the powerful partners … [will] stop Israel in its track[s] from getting away with this very violation of international law and the will of the entire community of nations,” Mansour said.

The Israeli security cabinet approved on Sunday measures that would make it easier for Israelis to seize Palestinian land and directly buy property in the occupied West Bank, while expanding Israel’s military control there.

Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967 and has been building settlements there in violation of international law, which prohibits the occupying power from transferring “parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies”.

Repeated UN resolutions have declared the Israeli occupation illegal. In 2024, the International Court of Justice ruled that the Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, “and the regime associated with them”, are “in violation of international law”.

‘Expansionist Israeli policies’

Israeli officials have openly suggested that the recent moves aim to annex the West Bank and prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Eli Cohen, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, said on Tuesday that the moves to tighten Israeli control over the West Bank represent “de facto sovereignty” over the territory.

Countries across the world have condemned Israel’s measures, but there have been no meaningful international consequences or sanctions against the country for its abuses against Palestinians.

On Tuesday, Mansour highlighted the growing international support for the Palestinian push against the Israeli occupation, stressing Palestine is “not alone”.

“It has Arab depth, Islamic depth, and we have many other friends also who will step up to the plate to declare their position as it relates to this specific issue,” he told reporters.

Turkiye’s ambassador to the UN, Ahmet Yildiz, read out a statement by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) denouncing the Israeli moves.

“The OIC group condemns in the strongest terms the illegal Israeli decisions and measures aimed at imposing unlawful Israeli sovereignty, entrenching settlement activity, and enforcing a new legal and administrative reality in the occupied West Bank,” he read.

“We express that expansionist Israeli policies and illegal measures pursued by the Israeli government in the occupied West Bank only serve to fuel violence and conflict in the region.”

Israel’s push to tighten control over the West Bank came days before Netanyahu’s visit to the United States, which officially starts on Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump, a staunch supporter of Israel, has previously voiced opposition to the annexation of the occupied West Bank.

Sir Keir Starmer’s ex-communications chief should be stripped of his peerage over his ties to a paedophile councillor, Labour’s chairwoman has said.

Anna Turley MP told Sky News “there’s no place […] in the Lords” for people like Matthew Doyle, who she suggested hadn’t been truthful before being elevated to parliament’s upper chamber earlier this year.

Lord Doyle apologised and was suspended from Labour on Tuesday for his links to Sean Morton, who he campaigned for in 2017 after he had been charged over indecent images of children.

The peer said he had believed Morton’s initial assertions of innocence at the time, before he later pled guilty.

Downing Street 10 was not aware Lord Doyle had campaigned for Morton at the time of his appointment, it is understood, and Ms Turley said “what we’d been told was not the truth when that decision was made”.

Asked if he should remain a peer, she told Sky News: “No, I don’t think he should. That’s my personal view.”

“There’s no place for them in the Lords” for people who “have not been clear and transparent”, she added.

Lord Doyle has apologised “unreservedly” for supporting Morton, who was a councillor in Moray, Scotland.

He first appeared in court in connection with indecent child images in late 2016, and was suspended by Labour.

He was running as an independent when Lord Doyle campaigned for him in May 2017. He didn’t plead guilty until November that year.

Lord Doyle said he had “extremely limited” contact with him after his conviction, and described his offences as “vile”.

“My thoughts are with the victims and all those impacted by these crimes,” he added.

He continued: “At the point of my campaigning support, Morton repeatedly asserted to all those who knew him his innocence, including initially in court.

“He later changed his plea in court to guilty.

“To have not ceased support ahead of a judicial conclusion was a clear error of judgment for which I apologise unreservedly. Those of us who took him at his word were clearly mistaken.”

Lord Doyle only took his place in the upper chamber last month. The SNP had opposed his peerage.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has called on the prime minister to publish “vetting advice and due diligence” reports provided before the peer’s appointment.

A Labour spokesman said Lord Doyle had lost the party whip while an investigation is carried out, and added: “All complaints are assessed thoroughly in line with our rules and procedures.”
