The high court has delivered a landmark win for survivors of clergy abuse, finding the Catholic church had a duty of care to protect a child from one of its paedophile priests.
A man known only as AA sued the Catholic church’s Newcastle and Maitland diocese over abuse he suffered at the hands of Father Ron Pickin in 1969, when he was aged just 13.
The abuse took place in a presbytery after Pickin had offered AA and another boy alcohol and cigarettes.
AA argued the diocese was liable for his abuse because it owed him a non-delegable duty of care – in other words, a duty of care which could not be shifted to another entity or person – and had breached that duty by allowing his abuse.
The church said it owed no such duty of care, because there was no evidence it knew of the risks posed by priests at that time. It also argued it could not be held liable for intentional criminal acts committed by its priests.
The church was successful at NSW’s highest court, the Court of Appeal, but AA appealed to the high court, which delivered its judgment on Wednesday.
The high court ruled in AA’s favour, finding that the diocese owed him a duty of care and breached it by allowing the abuse.
“The duty the Diocese owed to AA in 1969 was a duty to a child to ensure that while the child was under the care, supervision or control of a priest of the Diocese, as a result of the priest purportedly performing a function of a priest of the Diocese, reasonable care was taken to prevent reasonably foreseeable personal injury to the child,” the court ruled.
Lawyers have been keenly watching the case.
It represents a major shift in the liability of the church for abuse by its clergy.
Plaintiff law firms said the ruling had “finally enshrined” the principle that churches should be held responsible for abuse by members of their clergy.
“The ruling of a non-delegable duty is significant because it means churches and other institutions will be held liable for abuse perpetrated by those to whom it entrusts the care of children, even when criminal conduct has occurred,” Maurice Blackburn principal lawyer John Rule said.
“Importantly, the decision also clarifies the church’s duty of care to children, which confirms that institutions that place children in their care cannot wash their hands of responsibility when it comes to their safety.”

President John F. Kennedy’s grandson Jack Schlossberg — who is running for Congress in New York — doubled down on criticizing his cousin, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., on Tuesday and called the Trump cabinet official “dangerous.”
“Tell us what you think about your cousin, the Secretary of Health, and his position on vaccines that many of these children will not receive,” asked Mike Barnicle, a regular guest on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe.”
Schlossberg said RFK Jr. was a “dangerous person” in charge of life-and-death decisions.
“And as ridiculous as some of the claims and entertaining that they might be — it’s all fun when you’re designing a new food pyramid. But when people are dying of measles, this is serious business,” Schlossberg said. “People are not getting vaccinated; they rescinded the recommendation to get a Hepatitis B vaccine for newborns. Why?”

He continued, “I want Democrats to win back the House so that we have control over the Judiciary Committee because of one word, ‘subpoena.’ I want to know who is paying for the words that are coming out of his mouth, because they’re not backed by science.”
The Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately return Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
Schlossberg is running for Rep. Jerry Nadler’s seat, as the longtime Democratic lawmaker is set to retire.

GPUs are so hot right now – literally and metaphorically – that they’re driving mergers and acquisitions in the datacenter cooling industry.
On Tuesday, aircon company Trane acquired yet another liquid cooling startup, LiquidStack.
You may recall LiquidStack was one of the early players in two-phase immersion cooling, and first dunked servers into tanks of dielectric liquids to cool down crypto mining operations.
Microsoft was among the first to trial LiquidStack’s tech all the way back in 2021. Since then, the company has expanded its portfolio to include both single-phase and dual-phase immersion tanks, plus direct-to-chip cooling technologies, including a rather beefy 10MW modular coolant distribution unit (CDU).
Under the arrangement announced today, LiquidStack will continue to operate under Trane’s commercial HVAC business unit.
LiquidStack’s tech adds to Trane’s existing datacenter physical infrastructure portfolio, a segment that has become big business in recent years as demand for AI and other hot infrastructure grows.
By 2030, analyst firm Dell’Oro Group predicts, the datacenter physical infrastructure market will exceed $80 billion. One of the fastest-growing segments in that market is thermal management, which the analyst outfit predicts will achieve a compound annual growth rate of 20 percent.
By the end of the decade, Dell’Oro says, direct-to-chip liquid cooling alone will be an $8 billion business driven in large part by the tech that featured in many Super Bowl ads: AI.
Liquid cooling is no longer a nice-to-have but a requirement to get the most out of the latest AI hardware, which makes thermal management tech a potential bottleneck for adoption.
LiquidStack isn’t Trane’s first foray into liquid cooling. Back in December 2025, the company snapped up Stellar Energy, which produced modular cooling plants and coolant distribution units for, among other things, datacenters.
But these are only the latest in a string of datacenter physical infrastructure M&A kicked off by the AI boom. In late 2024, Schneider Electric acquired a 75 percent controlling interest in liquid cooling vendor Motivair with plans to purchase the remaining 25 percent by 2028.
Roughly a year prior, Vertiv purchased CoolTera and almost immediately sent the company’s manufacturing line into overdrive increasing production of CDUs by 45x.
Trane expects to close the acquisition of LiquidStack early this year. ®
The administration of United States President Donald Trump has sanctioned two leaders of Pacific island nations for alleged corruption, accusing them both of creating openings for China to increase its influence in the region.
On Tuesday, the US Department of State issued a notice alleging that the president of Palau’s Senate, Hokkons Baules, and a former mayor in the Marshall Islands, Anderson Jibas, had engaged in “significant corruption”.
Neither they nor their families will henceforth be allowed to enter the US, according to the statement.
“The Trump Administration will not allow foreign public officials to steal from U.S. taxpayers or threaten U.S. interests,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott wrote on social media.
The State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) also posted its support for the sanctions.
“Corruption that hurts U.S. interests will be met with significant consequences,” it said.
In both cases, the US credited the politicians’ actions with allowing the expansion of Chinese interests in the Pacific region.
The State Department alleged that Baules took bribes in exchange for supporting Chinese interests in Palau, an island in Micronesia that is the 16th smallest country in the world.
“His actions constituted significant corruption and adversely affected U.S. interests in Palau,” the US said in its statement.
Jibas, meanwhile, stands accused of “orchestrating and financially benefitting from” schemes to misuse the Bikini Resettlement Trust, a US-backed fund designed to compensate those negatively affected by nuclear bomb testing on the Bikini Atoll, part of the Marshall Islands.
The trust was worth nearly $59m in 2017, when the first Trump administration decided to hand control of the main resettlement fund to local authorities and relinquish its authority to audit.
Since then, the fund has emptied precipitously. As of February 2023, the trust had plummeted to a mere $100,000, and payments to Bikini Atoll survivors and descendants have ceased.
Critics have blamed Jibas, who was elected in 2016 to lead the Kili, Bikini and Ejit islands as mayor. He campaigned on having more local autonomy over the fund.
But reports in The Wall Street Journal and other news outlets accused him of misappropriating the funds for purchases including vacations, travel and a new pick-up truck.
In Tuesday’s announcement, the State Department connected Jibas’s alleged abuse to the spread of Chinese power in the Pacific and an increase in immigration to the US, two key issues in Trump’s platform.
“The theft, misuse, and abuse of the U.S.-provided money for the fund wasted U.S. taxpayer money and contributed to a loss of jobs, food insecurity, migration to the United States,” the department wrote.
“The lack of accountability for Jibas’ acts of corruption has eroded public trust in the government of the Marshall Islands, creating an opportunity for malign foreign influence from China and others.”
Both Palau and the Marshall Islands were US territories, occupied during World War II and granted independence in the late 20th century.
They both continue to be part of a Compact of Free Association with the US, which allows the North American superpower to continue military operations in the area and control the region’s defence.
They are also part of a dwindling list of countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan’s government, much to the ire of the People’s Republic of China.
Only about a dozen remain, and they are largely concentrated in Central America, the Caribbean or the Pacific islands.
But China has sought to pressure those smaller countries into rupturing their ties with Taiwan and recognising its government in Beijing instead.
The Asian superpower – often seen as a rival to the US – has also attempted to expand its sphere of influence to the southern Pacific, by building trade relations and countering US military authority in the area.
Baules, for example, is among the local politicians who have advocated for recognising Beijing’s government over Taipei’s, and he is a vocal proponent for increased ties with China.
Those shifting views have placed island nations like Palau and the Marshall Islands in the midst of a geopolitical tug-of-war, as the US struggles with China to maintain dominance in the region.
In other parts of the world, the US has also used sanctions to dissuade local officials from seeking closer ties with China.
Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino, for instance, has accused the US embassy in his country of threatening to strip local officials of their visas, as the US and China jockey for influence over the Panama Canal.
Similar reports have emerged in neighbouring Costa Rica, where officials like lawmaker Vanessa Castro and former President Oscar Arias have accused the US of revoking their visas over ties to China.
But there have been other points of tension between the Pacific Islands and the US in recent years.
The Trump administration has withdrawn from accords designed to limit climate change and quashed international efforts to reduce emissions, straining ties with the islands, which are vulnerable to rising sea levels.
Still, the US State Department framed the sanctions on Tuesday as an effort to ensure local accountability and defend US interests in the region.
“The United States will continue to promote accountability for those who abuse public power for personal gain and steal from our citizens to enrich themselves,” it said.
“These designations reaffirm the United States’ commitment to countering global corruption affecting U.S. interests.”

The FBI’s release of surveillance images in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie marks a notable development in the investigation, indicating authorities believe the images could help identify a subject they are seeking more information about.
Former “America’s Most Wanted” producer Jonathan Winfrey said the decision to release the images suggests investigators believe they are focused on the right individual and are seeking public assistance to move the case forward.
“They’re probably pretty certain that this is the guy they want to get,” Winfrey said. “This is America’s Most Wanted right now. They want this guy, and they want to catch him fast.”
Winfrey said the FBI’s public release of the images indicates investigators are looking for additional tips to help confirm the subject’s identity.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NANCY GUTHRIE’S FAMILY AS SHERIFF SAYS ‘EVERYBODY’S STILL A SUSPECT’

This image released by the FBI shows an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance in Tucson, Arizona, on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026. (Provided by FBI)
“They’re releasing the data because they want that additional help,” he said.
Winfrey said one detail that stands out is the subject’s apparent familiarity with surveillance cameras.
“This guy obviously knew how to disconnect those cameras or knew about those cameras,” Winfrey said, referencing reports that a doorbell camera at Guthrie’s Tucson home was tampered with.
Based on his experience covering fugitive cases, Winfrey said crimes involving that level of awareness are often not random.
“Most of the time it was not random,” he said. “There was always some kind of a resentment or there was some kind of a connection involved.”
NANCY GUTHRIE WAS EXPECTED AT FRIEND’S HOME, NOT CHURCH ON DAY SHE VANISHED: SOURCE

Winfrey said investigators will likely be examining whether the subject had prior access to the property or any familiarity with the victim.
Winfrey said his initial thoughts included the possibility of cross-border criminal activity, given Tucson’s proximity to Mexico and cases he has previously worked on involving kidnappings for ransom.
“Before I heard this news this morning, I was assuming Tucson’s very close to the Mexican border — it could have been someone who came across,” he said.
That assessment changed, he said, after learning authorities believe the images show a single individual.
“Now with this new news about it looks like it’s one individual, I don’t know what he’s thinking,” Winfrey said. “Is it a quick grab? Is it some kind of cash thing? Or is there more motive behind it?”
Winfrey said the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department are likely limiting what they release publicly as they work to locate the subject.
“It’s all hands on deck. This is a high-profile case,” he said. “They’re digging deep and they’re probably keeping it close to the chest because they want to catch this guy.”
He added that investigators are working quickly to prevent further harm.
“They’re busting their asses right now,” Winfrey said. “They want to catch this guy before he does anything harmful — to Ms. Guthrie or anybody else.”
41-MINUTE TIMELINE IN NANCY GUTHRIE CASE RAISES RED FLAGS FROM EX-HOMICIDE DETECTIVE

This image released by the FBI show an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance in Tuscon, Arizona, Sunday, February 1, 2026. (Provided by FBI)
Winfrey said he believes authorities have more information than they are sharing publicly at this stage.
“I think these guys know a lot more than they’re letting on to the public,” he said.
Winfrey emphasized that advances in surveillance and biometric technology have changed how cases like this are investigated.
“The eye is your total ID now,” he said. “Retina identification is very powerful.”
Attempts to conceal identity, he added, are increasingly ineffective.
“You’re not gonna get away with it,” Winfrey said.

As investigators continue working to identify and locate the subject, Winfrey said the case appears to be progressing.
“It’s just a matter of time,” he said.

India US Trade Deal: America has quietly made changes in the fact sheet related to the India-US trade deal. A day after this document was released by the White House, its words and some conditions were changed. The biggest change has happened in the line in which earlier it was said that India “commits” to buy American goods worth more than $500 billion. Now it has been changed to “intends to buy”. Due to this an important part of the agreement has become soft.
What was said in the fact sheet
A few days after the framework for a mutually beneficial trade deal between India and America was revealed, the White House released a fact sheet on Tuesday. It was said that India will eliminate or reduce taxes on all American industrial goods and many types of American food and agricultural products. An earlier version of the fact sheet read, “India has committed to buying more American goods and more than $500 billion worth of American energy, information and communications technology, agriculture, coal and other products.”
what changed now
In the new version on the White House website, the word “intention” has been used instead of “commit”. Also, the word “agriculture” has also been removed from the list of products. Similarly, the earlier version read that “India will eliminate or reduce taxes on all US industrial goods and a number of US food and agricultural products, including dried distillers grains, red sorghum, dried fruits, fresh and processed fruits, certain pulses, soybean oil, wines, and spirits.” The part “some pulses” has been removed in the new version.
Changed stance on digital tax also
In another major change, it previously said that “India will remove the digital services tax” and “commit to negotiating stronger rules to remove barriers to digital trade.” Now it has not been said in the new fact sheet that India will remove digital service tax. It only reads that “India is ready to negotiate strong bilateral digital trade rules.”
What has been decided in both the countries
Last week, India and America had announced the framework of an interim trade deal. Under this, both the countries will reduce import duty on many things, so that mutual trade can increase. According to this proposal, America will reduce the tax on Indian goods from 50 percent to 18 percent. In return, India will eliminate or significantly reduce taxes on all American industrial products and many types of American food and agricultural goods. These include dried distillers grains, red sorghum for animal feed, dried fruits, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, wine and spirits.
Purchase plan of 500 billion dollars
According to the joint statement of both the countries, India is planning to buy energy products, aircraft and aircraft parts, precious metals, technology related goods and coking coal worth about $ 500 billion from America in the next five years.
Trump’s big decision
After the deal is finalized, US President Donald Trump has also removed the 25 percent additional import duty imposed on India. This tax was imposed in August because India was buying oil from Russia. Trump said that India has taken “very big steps” in this direction and New Delhi has assured to stop oil imports from Moscow directly or indirectly.
When will the final deal be signed?
New Delhi and Washington are preparing to sign the final trade deal by mid-March this year.
A major case of cheating has come to light on the very first day of 12th board examination in a college located in Chausala in Beed district of Maharashtra. In fact, during the English subject examination, the family members of the children were seen gathering outside the examination center and trying to make the students cheat through the windows. This entire incident was captured in the drone camera of the Education Department.
As soon as the English paper started, unusual activities started outside the college campus. A large number of parents were seen standing near the walls and windows of the college. It is clearly visible in the drone footage that some people were trying to reach near the windows and deliver slips and answers to the students sitting inside.
The college is surrounded by open grounds, which made it easy to reach the windows. As soon as the drone came closer, many people were seen running away from there. Such incidents raise many serious questions on the claims of cheating-free examinations.
The Education Department had flown a drone for surveillance to prevent cheating. According to officials, about three hours of video footage has been recorded. This footage is being investigated so that the people responsible can be identified. Beed District Magistrate Vivek Johnson said that the matter is being investigated seriously. He made it clear that strict action will be taken to stop copying and the culprits will not be spared.
Cheating-free examination campaign is being run across the state, but this incident in Beed has become a cause of embarrassment for the administration. Drone footage has exposed the flaws in the examination system.
Earlier in 2015, a similar incident had come to light during the board exams in Bihar, where family members were seen climbing the walls of the school and distributing slips. In that case, about 500 students were debarred from the examination after the pictures went viral. Now further action will be decided after the investigation report in Beed case.
The shooting occurred at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, in Canada’s province of British Columbia, police said.
Published On 11 Feb 2026
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have said that 10 people, including the shooter, have been killed in a shooting at a school in British Columbia, with more people injured.
Canada’s CBC public broadcaster reported that according to police, six people were found dead inside the high school in Tumbler Ridge, while another person died on the way to hospital.
Another two people were found dead at a home police said they believe is connected to the shooting, CBC added.
The RCMP said the incident involved an “active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School” in British Columbia province and that “an individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury.”
“Two victims have been airlifted to hospital with serious or life‑threatening injuries… Approximately 25 others are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non‑life‑threatening injuries,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated. Police are working closely with the school district to support a coordinated reunification process for families,” it added.

A glimpse of the elections will be visible in the state government’s budget to be presented on Wednesday. In the budget of around Rs 9 to 9.5 lakh crore, the maximum amount will be allocated for investment, employment, basic development and welfare schemes. One fourth of the budget will be for infrastructure.
This last full budget to be presented before the 2027 assembly elections will be historic in many ways. The center of the budget will be regional development. The government can give a big gift to eliminate the regional imbalance especially in Purvanchal and Bundelkhand. About Rs 1900 crore may be allocated for Purvanchal and Bundelkhand Development Fund, which is about Rs 700 crore more than the last financial year. This will lead to rapid development in 37 backward districts of both the regions.
