SpaceX backs Anthropic with data centre deal amidst Musk’s OpenAI lawsuit | Technology News

SpaceX pens a new deal with Anthropic as Elon Musk sues competitor OpenAI for allegedly backtracking on its mission.

Anthropic has reached a deal to tap the computing resources of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, marking a detente with its one-time critic and a boost for both companies in the high-stakes artificial intelligence race.

Under the agreement announced on Wednesday, Anthropic will use the full computing power of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, Tennessee, which houses more than 220,000 Nvidia processors and will give the Claude chatbot maker 300 megawatts of new capacity within a month. That’s enough electricity to power more than 300,000 homes – as the Dario Amodei-led company seeks to boost the capacity of its Claude Pro and Claude Max AI assistants for subscribers.

The announcement comes as Anthropic held its developer day and unveiled a new feature for its Claude AI system called “dreaming”. The tool allows AI systems to review work between sessions, spot patterns, and update files that store user preferences and other context.

Available as a research preview, “dreaming” comes with software for managing agents, or AI programmes that perform tasks with little human involvement. Amodei has previously warned that AI could wipe out 50 percent of entry-level jobs in the next one to five years.

Buoyed by the extra capacity from the SpaceX deal and other similar recent agreements, Anthropic said it was doubling Claude Code’s rate limits for its paid plans, removing peak-hour usage caps for Pro and Max accounts, and sharply increasing the volume of requests developers can make to its Claude Opus models.

The company said it is also interested in working with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of space-based orbital data centres – one of Musk’s key goals and a major driver behind SpaceX’s initial public offering – as the endeavour is expected to be highly capital-intensive and technically challenging.

In a statement on X, Musk said he made the decision to lease computing power to Anthropic after spending time with its leaders last week. Their work to ensure Anthropic’s Claude AI is “good for humanity” impressed him, he said.

“No one set off my evil detector,” wrote Musk, who is battling OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman in court for allegedly breaching its mission to develop AI for the good of humanity and remain a nonprofit organisation.

OpenAI strain

Last week Musk alleged in court that by late 2022, Altman was trying to “steal the charity” and claimed that “it turned out to be true”.

Musk, who cofounded OpenAI, also claimed that OpenAI wouldn’t have existed without him. The world’s richest man said that he founded OpenAI following a conversation with Google cofounder Larry Page, which he felt lacked concern about AI safety.

“I said, ‘What if AI wipes out all humans?’ He said that would be fine so long as artificial intelligence survives. I said that was insane, that’s just crazy. And then he called me a ‘speciesist’ because I care about humans more than AI. … The reason OpenAI exists is because Larry Page called me a ‘speciesist.’ … What would be the opposite of Google? An open-source nonprofit.”

OpenAI’s lawyers claimed that Musk’s lawsuit was an attempt to undermine the Altman-led company in favour of his own xAI, now part of SpaceX.

Musk’s deal comes as the administration of United States President Donald Trump pens new agreements with other AI giants, excluding Anthropic.

On Tuesday, tech giants Microsoft, Google and Elon Musk’s xAI agreed to allow the federal government access to test their new artificial intelligence tools amid hacking concerns surrounding Anthropic’s technology.

Last week, the Department of Defense also announced a deal with 10 different AI giants to use their tech on classified networks. Anthropic was not part of that deal.

Josh Duggar accuses Michelle Duggar of prioritizing PR over family

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Years after the 2015 fallout that rocked the Duggar family, Josh Duggar took aim at his mom in private text messages.

Josh, who molested four of his sisters as a teenager, accused Michelle Duggar of caring more about “PR” and the family image than the damage to his life. The former reality TV star was later sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material.

“[I] am very disappointed. I feel like you just don’t receive criticism or take admission for your own actions THAT HAVE DIRECTLY AFFECTED MY LIFE, including in this situation,” Josh wrote in a text message to his mom and obtained by People.

In the messages, Josh reiterated his claim that the images and videos found on his computer were downloaded by another employee at the used car dealership where he worked.

“I AM NOT BLAMING YOUR FOR THE SITUATION, BUT YOU ARE BLAMING ME – AND YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW THE TRUTH – YOU SAID THAT YOURSELF TODAY,” he added in a text sent after his sentencing in 2022.

Josh insisted he was innocent and argued his parents’ belief shouldn’t dictate how they treat him, according to the outlet.

“I just think you don’t get it,” he allegedly wrote. “You don’t understand how you have hurt me and you keep trying to make yourselves ‘look good’ instead of trying to be concerned about your responses to my charges or anything else in my life.

Three months before his sentencing, Josh accused his parents of trying to “save shows and public images” as scandals rocked the Duggar family, including the 2015 molestation allegations. Between 2002 and 2003, Josh molested four of his sisters. After Jim Bob Duggar learned of the allegations, the family chose to handle the matter privately rather than report it to police.

As details of Josh’s actions spread in the community, the Springdale Police Department quietly opened an investigation in 2006. A year later, the family began filming “17 Kids and Counting.” The reality series ran for 10 seasons before the allegations became public in 2015.

Hackers abuse Google ads for GoDaddy ManageWP login phishing

Hackers abuse Google ads for GoDaddy ManageWP login phishing

A phishing campaign delivered through Google sponsored search results is targeting credentials for ManageWP, GoDaddy’s platform for managing fleets of WordPress websites.

The threat actor is using an adversary-in-the-middle (AitM) approach where the fake login page acts as a real-time proxy between the victim and the legitimate ManageWP service.

ManageWP is a centralized remote administration platform for WordPress websites, enabling users to manage multiple sites from a single panel instead of logging into separate dashboards. Common users include web developers, web agencies managing client sites, and enterprises.

Researchers at Guardio Labs warn that the fake result is displayed above the real one for the ‘managewp’ query, luring users who rely on Google to find the URL for logging into ManageWP.

Source: Guardio Labs

Users clicking on the malicious result are taken to a login page that looks identical to the real one. However, any credentials typed in are delivered to a Telegram channel controlled by the attacker.

Unlike the more common phishing pages that capture username and password pairs, the campaign uses a live AiTM setup, as the attacker uses the credentials to log into the platform in real-time.

The victim is then served a fake prompt to enter the two-factor authentication (2FA) code, which the threat actor uses to gain access to the ManageWP account.

Guardio Labs head researcher Nati Tal told BleepingComputer that each ManageWP account typically hosts hundreds of sites.

According to WordPress.org stats, ManageWP’s plugin, which gives the platform control over registered sites, is active on more than 1 million websites.

Guardio Labs was able to infiltrate the attacker’s command-and-control (C2) infrastructure and observed a dropdown command system that enables an interactive and operator-driven phishing flow.

Tal also said that the platform does not seem to be part of a commodity kit but rather a private phishing framework.

Interestingly, the researcher found embedded in the code a Russian-language agreement, in which the author denounces responsibility for illegal activity, includes an educational/research use disclaimer, and prohibits public leaks of panel files or use against Russia-based systems.

Guardio Labs has captured victim data from the attackers and started to contact victims to alert them about the exposure. The researchers have confirmed 200 unique victims at the time of writing.

Russia tells diplomats to leave Kyiv in case Moscow launches mass strikes | Russia-Ukraine war News

Moscow threatens retaliatory strikes if Ukraine attacks Russia during Victory Day commemorations.

Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has warned diplomatic missions to promptly evacuate their staff from the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, in case Moscow launches a mass strike on the city in response to potential Ukrainian attempts to disrupt Russia’s May 9 Victory Day commemorations.

In a video posted on Telegram on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova urged diplomats to heed the Defence Ministry’s warning of a strike, issued on Monday, in the event of a Ukrainian attack during the commemorations of the Soviet Union’s victory against Nazi Germany in World War II and a military parade in Red Square.

“The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly urges the authorities of your country, the leadership of your organisation, to treat this statement with the utmost responsibility and ensure the timely evacuation from the city of Kyiv of the personnel of diplomatic and other representations in connection with the inevitability of a retaliatory strike on Kyiv by Russia’s Armed Forces,” Zakharova said.

Zakharova said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had made “aggressive and threatening statements” about disrupting the commemorations at a meeting of the European Political Community in Armenia on Monday.

“Several EU countries were present,” she said. “None of them reprimanded the ringleader of the Kyiv regime.”

‘This is telling’

In his remarks in Armenia, Zelenskyy noted a Russian announcement that the commemorations were being scaled down and taking place without military hardware for security reasons.

“It will be the first time in many, many years they cannot afford military equipment, and they fear drones may buzz over Red Square. This is telling,” he said.

Zelenskyy said Russia was redeploying air defences from its regions to around Moscow in preparation for the May 9 military parade, adding that the move creates space for more Ukrainian long-range attacks.

“This indicates that the Russian leadership is not preparing for the ceasefire that has been the subject of so many statements, and is more concerned about its parade in Moscow than about the rest of Russia,” Zelenskyy posted on X.

“At the same time, we observe that this creates additional opportunities for our long-range sanctions. We will define our corresponding priorities,” he added.

Meanwhile, both countries announced competing ceasefires before the event. Both sides have accused each other of breaching the unilateral ceasefire announced by Ukraine for May 6. Russia offered its own temporary truce for its Victory Day celebrations on May 9.

Framber Valdez gets what he deserves for punk move, suspended six games after drilling Boston’s Trevor Story

Framber Valdez unraveled against Boston on Tuesday, and MLB made him pay.

The short-tempered starting pitcher got shellacked against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday and reached a boiling point, customary for him, when he drilled Trevor Story with a 94-mph fastball that prompted a benches-clearing brawl.

As a result of losing his cool in a 10-3 loss and nailing Story, Valdez was suspended for six games, Major League Baseball announced Wednesday.

RED SOX BROADCAST FUMES AT FRAMBER VALDEZ FOR ACTING LIKE A CHILD IN BENCH-CLEARING MOVE: ‘WHAT A JOKE’

Valdez looked like a batting practice pitcher as the Red Sox treated him like a piñata. The meltdown peaked in the fourth inning when Willson Contreras and Wilyer Abreu launched back-to-back homers, pushing the score to a humiliating 10-2. At that point, things only spiraled further.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch seemed weary of defending the optics.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy didn’t buy the scene as accidental.

“Yes, I do think it was intentional,” Tracy admitted, via the Boston Herald.

Valdez pushed back on that claim after the game.

“It was not intentional. It was not on purpose. It might look like that, but it wasn’t,” Valdez said through an interpreter. “

… I consider the ejection completely unfair given that, first of all, they should have given me a warning. And of course if it was on purpose, then I do it a second time or a third time, of course, I’m getting ejected.”

In trying to send a message, MLB sent one right back and put Valdez in his place.

The NESN broadcast team unloaded on Valdez as the veteran unravelled.

“That is weak,” said play-by-play man Dave O’Brien. “You give up three home runs, back-to-back shots, and then you drill Trevor Story.”

“You can’t get them out, so you throw at them. What a joke. The one guy who caused it is hiding in the back,” added analyst Will Middlebrooks.

Middlebrooks also took a shot at Valdez’s past, adding, “Well, let’s just hope he doesn’t cross up his catcher now that he’s mad.”

Middlebrooks referred to the nasty incident last season where Valdez crossed up his own catcher, Cesar Salazar, after Salazar tried calling off a Valdez pitch that resulted in a homer.

Paris Saint-Germain win both legs of their semifinal with Bayern Munich to take the tie 6-4.

Holders Paris Saint-Germain booked a Champions League final against Arsenal as a 1-1 draw in their semifinal second leg at Bayern Munich sealed a 6-5 aggregate victory.

Leading 5-4 after last week’s thrilling first leg in Paris, Luis Enrique’s side stretched their overall advantage early on through Ousmane Dembele on Wednesday.

Harry Kane struck in added time for Bayern, but it was too late for a comeback.

PSG will be favourites against Premier League leaders Arsenal on May 30 in Budapest after an excellent defensive display at the Allianz Arena, also the scene of their maiden Champions League final triumph over Inter Milan last year.

The French giants are hoping to become only the second back-to-back winners since 1990, after Real Madrid.

Bayern were angered by some first-half refereeing decisions but were largely toothless in attack.

The six-time European champions have still not reached the final since beating PSG in the 2020 showpiece in Lisbon.

PSG extended their aggregate lead to two goals in just the third minute, as Dembele fired the ball into the roof of the net from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s cutback.

Manuel Neuer made fine second-half saves from Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue to keep Bayern in the tie.

Kane drilled in his 14th goal in the competition this season in the fourth minute of injury time, but it was too little, too late for the home team.

Rep. Jayapal faces backlash over Cuba oil talks amid treason claims

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A Democratic lawmaker is drawing backlash after saying she spoke with foreign ambassadors about getting oil to Cuba despite U.S. sanctions, defending the outreach as “literally our right and responsibility.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., made the remarks during a recent Seattle briefing following a congressional delegation trip to Cuba, where she discussed the island’s worsening fuel shortages and U.S. policy toward the communist regime.

“I was in conversations with the ambassadors from Mexico and some other places … trying to figure out how to get oil there,” Jayapal said during the briefing, calling the situation on the island “a crisis beyond imagination.”

Jayapal said the event was part of a broader briefing on the humanitarian situation in Cuba following her recent visit.

“As many of you know, I traveled to Cuba as part of a congressional delegation last month,” she said. “It is part of my role to see how U.S. foreign policy is actually affecting the people in the countries where that policy is being implemented.”

The controversy has also prompted discussion of the Logan Act, a rarely used federal law that bars unauthorized individuals from negotiating with foreign governments in disputes involving the United States.

Andrew McCarthy, a former federal prosecutor, told Fox News Digital the statute has never resulted in a conviction and has been used only sparingly in U.S. history.

“There has never been a conviction under it — in fact, there have only been two indictments, the last one about 174 years ago,” McCarthy said.

YouTuber turns hamster wheel into phone charger

Offbeat

Okay, the rodent was a willing participant – after all, who turns down treats for a spin that charges a phone?

Who needs power outlets when you can charge off of animal labor? The next time someone asks you if a hamster running on a wheel can produce a measurable amount of energy, you can point them to one inventive young YouTuber who has proven that the answer isn’t just yes – it’s also enough energy to harvest.

Flamethrower, a Spanish YouTuber whose channel is full of experiments and DIY projects, most recently took to the video platform to post about his experiment in turning his brother’s hamster’s wheel into a machine he could use to charge his smartphone.

The answer is yes, actually

“After my parents prohibited me from genetically or cybernetically modifying it,” Flamethrower explained in the video, “I deemed its existence … unacceptably useless. So what did I do? Exploit it for energy production, of course.”

As anyone who’s owned a hamster knows, midnight runs on a squeaky wheel can be obnoxious to say the least. Sleepless nights, combined with memories of cartoons where hamster wheels powered the contraptions of evil geniuses, gave the young maker an idea: Strap a turbine to the wheel and make that hamster earn its keep.

Of course, it’s not as simple as just attaching a 5V electric motor to use as a turbine and wiring it up to a USB-C plug. Hamsters can’t exactly be cajoled onto a wheel for regular charging shifts, and even if they could be, keeping them running at a charging pace would be pretty much impossible.

“Say you have one of those common 5V DC motors,” Flamethrower explained. “Unless you spin that at over 10,000 RPM you wouldn’t even reach the standard 15-watt charging speed” of most modern smartphones.

“Forget about quick charging,” he added. “The motor would probably melt before that.”

To get around those limitations, Flamethrower turned to the CJMCU-2557 low-power energy-harvesting chip. Energy harvesters like the 2557 (albeit larger ones) are designed to boost and regulate tiny amounts of input power, from sources such as solar cells or generators, into a usable voltage suitable for charging components like a capacitor or, in this case, a single lithium-ion battery cell.

After doing some wiring work and putting the contraption together, Flamethrower left it to run overnight, and woke to a battery with enough charge in it to provide juice to his phone, though the amount wasn’t substantial.

“I haven’t measured exactly how much battery it can charge,” Flamethrower told us in an email. “It’s not a lot, so it certainly won’t fill the entirety of a phone’s battery in a single night, although of course the energy generated each day can vary a lot based on the hamster’s mood.”

“I did a very rough calculation and the current generated might be like around an amp when the fella is running,” Flamethrower added. In other words, as frenetic as a hamster can get, it’s still not producing that much energy.

Regardless, the young inventor told us that he is still using the device, and that it’s proved to be fantastic for providing energy to charge the family’s smartwatches. As for whether he might consider attaching a bigger battery, that might be a bit overkill, he told us.

“In any case, the CJMCU-2557 is only meant to charge 1 cell,” Flamethrower said. “There are, admittedly, slightly higher capacity cells, but I use it frequently enough to not have to care about reaching their limit.”

A useful invention, then, if not a bit of an on-the-nose realization of a science-fiction dystopia trope. Hey, at least the hamster is happy and putting all that necessary calorie burning to work for a good cause – if we all used our pets’ episodes of the zoomies to charge our devices, think of the load on the grid we could save. ®

Trump says had ‘very good talks’ with Iran as Tehran reviews US proposal | US-Israel war on Iran News

0

United States President Donald Trump says he has had “very good talks” with Iran over the past 24 hours and it is “very possible that we will make a deal”, as Tehran reviews a US peace proposal that sources said would formally end the war.

Signalling progress in the ongoing talks between the two sides, Trump on Wednesday also said Iran should suspend its nuclear programme and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to resume bombardment if negotiations fall apart.

“Look, this is very simple. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon because as tough as they are, we want to keep them alive. We want to keep all of you alive,” he told reporters at the White House.

In an interview with US media outlet PBS, Trump also said he was optimistic about reaching an agreement with Iran before his scheduled trip to China next week.

“I think it’s got a very good chance of ending, and if it doesn’t end, we have to go back to bombing the hell out of them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei played down reports suggesting an agreement with the US was close, calling them exaggerated.

He said Tehran had not yet issued a formal response to the latest US proposal, but is continuing to exchange diplomatic messages via mediator Pakistan.

Trump has repeatedly played up the prospect of an agreement that would end the US-Israel war on Iran that started on February 28, so far without success. The two sides remain at odds over a variety of difficult issues, such as Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its control of the Strait of Hormuz, which before the war handled one-fifth ‌of the world’s oil and gas supply.

A Pakistani source and another source briefed on the mediation told the Reuters news agency that an agreement was close on a one-page memorandum that would formally end the conflict. That would kick off discussions to unblock shipping through the strait, lift US sanctions on Iran, and set curbs on Iran’s nuclear programme, the sources told the agency.

It was unclear how the memorandum differs from a 14-point plan proposed by Iran last week.

Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency, citing an unnamed source, said the US proposal contained some unacceptable provisions, without specifying which ones.

Lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei, a spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s Foreign Policy and National Security Committee, described the text as “more of an American wish list than a reality”.

“The Americans will not gain anything in a war they are losing that they have not gained in face-to-face negotiations,” he wrote on social media.

US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott told Al Jazeera that Trump remained “clear-eyed” about the temporary short-term disruptions caused by Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, but that Washington can’t “normalise a country being able to determine who is allowed to use an international waterway”.

“I am certainly not going to preview or predict the actions of what the president may decide in the future, but the president has been clear from the very beginning that he prefers a diplomatic solution… But make no mistake that President Trump means what he says when he says the Iranian regime can never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon,” he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would speak with Trump later on Wednesday about the ongoing negotiations with Iran, adding that they had both agreed that all enriched uranium must be removed from Iran to prevent it from developing a nuclear bomb.

Iran has steadfastly refused to give up its enriched uranium, which it insists is not for making a nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile, US military forces operating in the Gulf of Oman said they had disabled an Iranian-flagged oil tanker after it allegedly failed to comply with warnings, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced.

CENTCOM said in a statement that the vessel – identified as the M/T Hasna – was observed transiting international waters en route to an Iranian port on the Gulf of Oman at approximately 14:00 GMT on Wednesday.

US forces issued “multiple warnings” to the tanker, informing its crew that the vessel was in violation of the blockade, the command said. The US blockade against ships attempting to enter or depart Iranian ports remains “in full effect”, it reiterated.

Trump late on Tuesday announced a pause in “Project Freedom”, a US military operation to guide stranded commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz – after only a day – citing a chance to seal a deal to end the war.

Trump wrote on social media that the surprise decision to halt the mission came after requests from “mediator Pakistan and other countries”, saying “Great Progress has been made toward a Complete and Final Agreement” with Tehran.

A local Islamic group rented out the Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark for its annual Dallas Fort-Worth (DFW) “Epic Eid” celebration June 1. A flier for the event originally stated that the gathering was a “Muslim only event” that required a “modest dress code.”

Amid the backlash, the organizer of the event, Aminah Knight, said the event was about “creating a space where individuals and families, particularly those who value modest dress and a modest environment, can come together and enjoy a recreational setting comfortably.”

The new poster removes “Muslim only event” and now says “Modest dress only,” and replaces the phrase “For Muslims only” with “All are welcome.”

“In response to feedback, we have updated our materials to clearly reflect that this is a modest dress-only event, centered around a respectful and family-friendly environment,” she wrote in a message on the event website.

The event is the third being held at Epic Waters, a city-owned water park funded in part by a voter-approved 0.25% sales tax in the DFW suburb of Grand Prairie.

Initially, the event advertised a “Muslim only event” admission policy that featured halal food and a private prayer area. Women are required to dress in “burkinis,” and men are required to wear swim trunks and shirts.

Although men and women won’t be separated, the event website states that guests should uphold “Islamic etiquette,” just as they do in other mixed-gender spaces.

MUSLIM CIVIL RIGHTS GROUP CAIR SUES TEXAS OVER ABBOTT’S ‘TERRORIST’ DESIGNATION

Abbott blasted the event, calling the initial “Muslim only” policy “unconstitutional” and “religious discrimination.”

“I signed HB 4211 into law — banning Muslim-only no-go zones in Texas,” he wrote on X. “The City must cancel the event and commit to never allowing something like it again by May 11th, or lose $530,000 in state grants. Let this be a lesson to local officials: Facilities funded by ALL taxpayers are not just for a subset of Texans.”

In a letter to Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen, Abbott noted that his Public Safety Office has five active grants with the city and that city leaders agreed to comply with state laws regarding civil rights and discrimination upon accepting the awards.
