Now punished for 34 year old crime, 84 year old ‘guilty’ reached the court with stick in one hand and bent back

A surprising case has come to light from Vaishali district of Bihar. Here, an 84-year-old man has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment in a 34-year-old ‘attempt to murder’ case. District and Additional Sessions Judge-I Manoj Kumar Tiwari found Deep Rai guilty in this case and sentenced him to three years imprisonment and convicted the other four family members and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment each.

The other four convicts have died and in view of Deep Rai’s old age, the court has also granted him interim bail. Apart from this, the court imposed a fine of Rs 25 thousand each on the five convicts – Deep Rai, Jagdish Rai, Naresh Rai, Nagdev Rai and Nakeshwar Rai.

Viral video of the elderly became a topic of discussion

The case is from Hajipur in Vaishali district, from where a video went viral on social media. In this video, it could be seen that an elderly man of 84-85 years, with a stick and slippers in his hand, reached Hajipur court with the help of two men to hear his punishment.

What were the allegations against Deep Rai?

Deep Rai and other four members of the family were accused of spreading glass pieces on the road and carrying out a fatal attack on the husband and wife. Actually, this matter is from the year 1992 i.e. 34 years old. On the morning of 10 November 1992, in Raghopur village of Judgavanpur police station area, Adalat Rai and his wife Ramsakhi Devi were sitting at their door. Meanwhile, Deep Rai arrived with other members of his family and started laying pieces of glass on the road. When Adalat Rai and his wife protested against laying glass pieces on the road, they were beaten up.

Not only this, the culprits also shot and injured both the husband and wife. The couple was admitted to the hospital for treatment and an FIR was registered against 9 people at Judgavanpur police station. Charge sheets were filed in the court on 13 March 1993. On 31 June 1993, the court took cognizance and on 17 June 1999, charges were framed, in which five people were made accused on the basis of witness and person.

Deep Rai was seen with sticks and slippers in his hands

Four out of the five accused died during the justice process that lasted 34 years. Only one is left, 84-year-old Deep Rai, who was summoned by Hajipur court. Deep Rai’s condition has deteriorated so much that he is unable to walk or even sit properly. Somehow, with the help of sticks and the help of people, he reached the court.

‘Justice delayed is justice denied’

Whoever saw the video of elderly Deep Rai became emotional. However, this question also arose in the minds of people that even though Deep Rai has become old now, he had definitely tried to murder two people. How right is it to show mercy to a convict because of his old age? In such a situation, questions started being raised on the cases pending in the court for years. People say- Justice Delayed is Justice Denied i.e. delay in justice is equal to denial of justice. Now people are saying on social media that those who carried out the deadly attack on Adalat Rai and his wife lived their entire lives in freedom without being punished. The court should have taken a decision on time.
