Mumbai: The Mumbai Cricket Association on Friday announced that a stand at the famous Wankhade Stadium will be named after former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri. Along with this, gates were also dedicated in the names of Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulji. While the stand in the stadium will be named in honor of former Mumbai captain Shastri, three different gates of the venue will be named after the players of the city.
“The Apex Council has approved the proposal to name the level one stand below the press box at the famous Wankhede Stadium after former India captain and famous commentator Ravi Shastri,” the MCA said. This honor has been given for his outstanding contribution to Mumbai and Indian cricket both as a player and a coach.
The lower stand of the press box will be named Ravi Shastri Stand.
These decisions were taken during the apex council meeting of MCA here. Gate number three will be named after Sardesai who played 30 Tests and a total of 179 first-class matches for India between 1960-61 and 1972-73. Gate number five will be named in honor of Edulji who played a total of 20 Tests and 34 ODIs between 1976-1993. Similarly, gate number six will be named after Solkar who played 27 Tests and seven ODIs for India. MCA President Ajinkya said, “Mumbai cricket is built on the foundation laid by our legends. It is our responsibility to honor those people who have brought glory to the city and the country.
He said, “The proposal to name the level one stand below the press box after Ravi Shastri is a tribute to his contribution. Similarly, naming the gates of Wankhede Stadium after Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulji ensures that every fan visiting the stadium is reminded of the great players who have shaped our illustrious cricketing legacy. “These decisions reflect MCA’s commitment to celebrating its past and inspiring the future generations,” he said.
