Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Firhad Hakim has resigned from the post of Mayor of Kolkata. He has submitted his resignation to the concerned authorities. However, no detailed information has yet been officially revealed regarding the reasons for resignation. Meanwhile, 58 MLAs of Trinamool Congress have formed a separate faction. Which has also been approved by the Assembly Speaker.

Firhad Hakim is counted among the most trusted and influential leaders of TMC. He had earlier also sought permission from Mamata Banerjee to leave the post of mayor. At that time the party leadership had asked him to continue in the post. But on Wednesday he again expressed his desire to resign, after which Mamata Banerjee approved it. It is being told that he took this decision due to difficulties in administrative work after the formation of BJP government.

Is Firhad Hakim’s resignation a big blow to TMC?

Firhad Hakim has been a big face of TMC for a long time. He is considered to have a strong hold on the party among the minority community. Since 2018, he was holding the post of Mayor of Kolkata and has also handled many important ministries in the state government. His resignation is being considered a big political loss for the party. Especially at a time when TMC is already struggling with rebellion and organizational crisis.

In recent times, many councilors of Kolkata Municipal Corporation have also resigned. There are continuous reports of dissatisfaction within the party. After the defeat in the assembly elections, many leaders are openly raising questions on the party leadership. Due to this, the internal position of TMC seems to be weakening. Political experts believe that in the coming days, it will be a big challenge for the party to save the organization.

Did the situation change after the formation of BJP government?

According to Kunal Ghosh, Firhad Hakim had expressed his desire to step down from the post citing difficulties in work after the formation of the BJP government. After the change of power in Bengal, the administrative and political environment has changed rapidly. Many TMC leaders say that after the change in government, it has become difficult for opposition leaders to work. However, BJP has been rejecting these allegations.
