The death toll in the horrific road accident that took place on Saturday evening on National Highway-31 under Kodha police station area of ​​Katihar district of Bihar has increased to 13. In the direct collision between a bus and a pickup van near Basgarha Chowk, 10 people died on the spot, while three more injured died during treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Purnia. Most of the deceased were residents of Ranipatra and Dagrua areas of Purnia district. After the accident, more than 20 seriously injured people were referred to Purnia GMCH. According to doctors, Talu Suren (48 years), Durga Bashki (60 years) and Ranjita Hembram (55 years) died during treatment.

Treatment of the injured continues in the hospital

At present, treatment of 20 injured is going on in GMCH. Deputy Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Bharat Kumar said that the medical team is making every possible effort to save the injured. However, the condition of some people remains critical. In such a situation, the number of casualties is likely to increase. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident.

Ex-gratia will be provided from PMNRF, help will also be given to the injured

In a statement issued on the official handle of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi said, ‘The accident in Katihar, Bihar is extremely painful. Deepest condolences to all those who lost their loved ones. Wish for speedy recovery of the injured. The families of each deceased will be given an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Security Force (PMNRF). Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also expressed condolences

A statement was also issued on the X-handle of CM Nitish Kumar on the Katihar road accident. He said, ‘The death of people in a horrific road accident in Kodha police station area of ​​Katihar district is sad. Deepest condolences to the bereaved family. The dependents of the deceased will be given an ex-gratia grant of Rs 02-02 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and the injured will be given Rs 50-50 thousand. The Chief Minister also directed senior officials to reach the spot and carry out relief and rescue work as well as provide proper treatment to the injured. CM Nitish also wished for the speedy recovery of the casualties.

Superintendent of Police gave information about the accident, the number of dead increased

As soon as information about the incident was received, Purnia Superintendent of Police (SP) Sweety Sehrawat reached GMCH late in the night. He inquired about the condition of the injured and talked to the doctors on duty about their better treatment. Confirming the 13 deaths, the SP said that in coordination with Katihar Police, the families of the deceased are being contacted and the process of post-mortem of the dead bodies is being ensured. According to eyewitnesses, the accident took place around 6.30 pm when a speeding bus, while trying to overtake, hit a pickup van coming from the front.

The car of devotees returning from the fair met with an accident

There were about 22 people in the pickup van that met with the accident, who were returning to their homes (Suhwa in Purnia and Sapni village in Hasanganj) after visiting Kathia Mela Dham in Jharkhand. The collision was so horrific that the pickup was blown apart and dead bodies were scattered on the road. During this time, a bike rider Sadanand Murmu (40 years) also got hit by the bus, who died on the spot.
