
Assembly elections can be held in four states West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Union Territory Puducherry in April. The Election Commission may announce the election schedule in the second week of March. This time elections are expected to be held in one phase in Assam.
Officials said that the tenure of the Assembly in Puducherry is ending on June 15, while in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, it is ending on May 20, 23, 10 and 7 respectively. Commission officials have started visits to these states to take stock of the election preparations.

FIR against five officials in Bengal on the instructions of Election Commission
Meanwhile, hours before the Election Commission’s deadline, the West Bengal government filed an FIR against five officials in connection with serious irregularities related to voter list revision. The Commission had directed to register a criminal case against these officers six months ago. It is alleged that more than 100 fake names were added to the voter list in Baruipur East of South 24 Parganas and Moyna assembly constituencies of East Medinipur.
The officers against whom action was taken include Electoral Registration Officer Debottam Dutta Chaudhary of Baruipur East, Assistant Electoral Registration Officer Tathagata Mandal, Biplab Sarkar and Sudipta Das of Moyna and Data Entry Operator Surojit Halder. They are accused of sharing log-in details and adding names illegally.
