Case of controversial statement on ganja in Mahakubh, Afzal Ansari gets interim relief from Allahabad HC

SP MP from Ghazipur Afzal Ansari has got relief from the court in the case of his controversial statement regarding ganja in Kumbh. Ansari has got interim relief from Allahabad High Court. The court has directed Afzal Ansari to file a discharge application in the trial court within three weeks. Disposing of the petition, the High Court said that if any such discharge application is filed by Afzal Ansari, then the concerned court will consider it before framing charges.

The court also accepted the demand of MP Afzal Ansari’s lawyer to apply for bail or anticipatory bail in the trial court. The court has ordered that no punitive action will be taken against the applicant Afzal Ansari for 15 days before he files bail or anticipatory bail in the concerned court.

Petition was filed in Allahabad High Court

The court has clarified that if the applicant files a petition in the concerned court, the concerned court will decide on it quickly without giving any unnecessary adjournment to any party. After the case registered in the Kotwali police station of Ghazipur in September 2024, a petition was filed in the Allahabad High Court demanding cancellation of the entire proceedings of the case going on in the MP/MLA Special Court, Ghazipur. MP MLA Special Court has taken cognizance of the charge sheet filed by the police.

What statement did Afzal Ansari give regarding ganja?

Before Mahakumbh 2025, in September 2024, SP MP Afzal Ansari had given a controversial statement regarding ganja. He had said that legalize ganja by giving it the status of law but why do you make such a big mockery of the law. People openly smoke ganja worth lakhs of crores. They smoke ganja in large gatherings. People smoke ganja in big religious events. He had said that even one goods train carrying ganja would be insufficient during the Kumbh Mela.

In this case, SI Raj Kumar Shukla had lodged an FIR under section 353 (3) of BNS at Kotwali police station of Ghazipur. After completion of investigation, police has filed charge sheet in Ghazipur court. The single bench of Justice Vikram D Chauhan gave the order.
