
Former Jharkhand Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam, arrested in the tender commission scam case, has got a big relief from the Supreme Court. After being in jail for almost two years, he will now be able to come out. Supreme Court Justice M.M. Sundareshwar and Justice N. Kotishwar Singh’s bench accepted his bail plea.
Earlier, Alamgir Alam had sought bail in the Jharkhand High Court, but on July 11, 2025, the High Court had rejected his petition. After this he approached the Supreme Court. Alamgir Alam is a senior Congress leader and has been Rural Development Minister in the Hemant Soren government.
ED had arrested Alamgir Alam in the tender commission scam on May 15, 2024. Before his arrest, he was interrogated for about 14 hours over two days. The investigating agency had told the court that an organized network of engineers, officials and ministers in the Rural Development Department were involved in collecting commission in exchange for tenders.
ED had also presented in the court documents related to 25 tenders worth Rs 92 crore passed in January 2024. According to the agency, Alamgir Alam had allegedly received a commission of Rs 1.23 crore in these tenders. In this case, ED had also interrogated former Secretary of Rural Development Department of Jharkhand and senior IAS officer Manish Ranjan. He was called to the zonal office of ED on 28 May 2024.

It is noteworthy that on May 6, 2024, ED had raided Alamgir Alam’s personal secretary Sanjeev Lal and his associated premises. During this period, about Rs 32 crore 20 lakh in cash was recovered. Sanjeev Lal and his servant Jahangir Alam were arrested in the case the same night. Later, both of them were sent to jail after being interrogated on remand.
