After BJP’s historic victory in Bengal elections, neighboring country Bangladesh has expressed great expectations about India. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has said that in view of the current situation, the long pending Teesta water agreement can be reconsidered. This is also because Mamata Banerjee has been seen as an obstacle in the efforts to resolve the Teesta water dispute between India and Bangladesh.
What did the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh say?
Before leaving on a trip to China, when journalists in Dhaka asked Khalilur Rahman whether there was still hope for an agreement on the long-pending water sharing of Teesta river, he immediately replied that the new government has not yet been formed in West Bengal and it is his job to tell what he thinks and what he will do. It is not my job to read his mind.
After this, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, while referring to the agreement reached in 2011, expressed the hope of reconsidering the agreement. Khalilur Rahman said that Bangladesh will not wait for India’s decision, because it is a question of life and death for the people living on the banks of the river.
Mamta Banerjee had protested
In the year 2011, Teesta Agreement was agreed upon between Bangladesh and India. It was expected that it would be signed during the visit of the then Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh to Dhaka, but due to the opposition of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, this agreement was put on hold. After this Bangladesh started Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project. Sheikh Hasina had sought assistance from China for the project during her visit to Beijing in 2019.
