United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that India’s lasting contribution to the world and the UN agenda is very important. He said that today the role of emerging countries like India is continuously increasing in the world and this is a big positive trend.
India’s growing role in the United Nations
According to Antonio Guterres, India has now become an important leader in almost every major discussion of the United Nations. This includes issues like peace-security, sustainable development and human rights. He especially praised the decisions taken during India’s G20 presidency. He also said that democracy is weakening in many parts of the world, but India stands as a strong democratic country.
India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping missions
Thanking India, the UN chief said, around 5000 Indian soldiers and policemen are deployed in UN peacekeeping missions. India sent an all-women police unit to Liberia in 2007 – a major achievement in UN history. This step was considered very important towards gender equality.
The changing economic power of the world
Antonio Guterres pointed out a big trend – in which the share of developed countries like G7 in the global economy is gradually decreasing. Whereas the share of emerging countries like India is increasing rapidly. He said that this will increase the chances of creating a world with more justice, equality and peace in the future.
United Nations needs reform
The UN Secretary General further said – The structure of the UN Security Council is outdated and to some extent unfair. It is necessary to improve it so that the new realities of the world can be properly represented. However, he also said that the UN is not just the Security Council – all countries have an equal voice in the General Assembly with 193 member states.
