But have you ever noticed why those straight or wavy lines are formed on the inner walls of the wash tub of the machine (where the clothes are put)?
Most people think of these just for design or strength, but in reality they are a very useful feature that helps in rubbing the clothes by hand. Recently a video went viral on social media, in which a user showed how these lines are used.
The secret went viral
The person told in the video that these lines made on the machine are for rubbing the collars of dirty shirts. These clothes do not get cleaned if they are put directly in the machine. In such a situation, clothes are rubbed on these lines after applying soap. With this, stubborn dirt gets removed easily. As soon as this video was shared, it went viral. People were writing in the comments – “Hey, I have been using it for 10 years, I didn’t even know!” or “It’s like a washboard!” Yes, these lines work exactly like a washboard.

In olden times, while washing clothes by hand, people used to rub them on these ridged boards so that the stains could be removed properly. This feature is kept in semi-automatic machines because these machines do not depend much on the agitator (central rotating part) like fully automatic machines. Here the clothes rotate themselves, but the machine alone is not enough for stubborn stains like collar, sleeves, pockets or mud and oil on children’s clothes. That’s why manufacturers designed these ridges on the tub walls. You can apply soap to the cloth and rub it on them, like you used to do on an old washboard. This makes the clothes cleaner and can then be put in the machine and washed normally.
