DMK and AIADMK have released their respective manifestos for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. While DMK has made 525 promises in its manifesto, AIADMK’s number of promises is only 297. The election manifesto of both the parties has focused on women voters and farmers.

Expansion

As Tamil Nadu assembly elections approach, the ruling DMK and opposition AIADMK have released their election manifestos. Many welfare promises have been made in the manifesto for key voter groups, especially women and farmers. DMK had made 505 promises in the 2021 elections but this time it has increased the number of its promises to 525. On the other hand, AIADMK, which is trying to return to power, has made 297 promises focused on welfare schemes and targeted subsidies.

Key points of DMK and AIADMK manifesto


  • A key aspect of the manifestos of both the parties is the emphasis on women-centric schemes. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that housewives from families not paying income tax would receive coupons worth Rs 8,000 to purchase or replace essential household appliances. The DMK has also promised to increase the monthly financial assistance for women from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000.

  • AIADMK general secretary K. Palaniswami has promised that free refrigerators will be given to ration card holders if his party comes to power. Additionally, under the ‘Kula Vilakku’ scheme, the AIADMK has proposed a subsidy of Rs 2,000 for all family card holders, which the party is offering as a direct benefit to families across the state.

  • Both parties have made similar promises in the social welfare sector. He has also assured to increase the old age pension from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000 and relief assistance related to fishing ban from Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000.

  • Stalin has proposed to increase the allowance for the disabled to Rs 2,500, while Palaniswami has committed to increase it to Rs 2,000.

  • In the education sector, the DMK has pledged to distribute free laptops to 35 lakh students pursuing higher education in the next five years. AIADMK has also made a similar proposal, promising to provide laptops to students studying in government and government-aided colleges.

  • Housing and rural development have been given prominence in the manifestos of both the parties. The DMK has pledged to build 10 lakh houses within five years while the AIADMK has promised to provide free houses to homeless families under its ‘Amma Illam’ scheme.

  • Major promises have also been made to farmers like increasing the minimum support price of paddy to Rs 3,500 per quintal and increasing the minimum support price of sugarcane to Rs 4,500 per tonne.

  • In the healthcare sector, Stalin has proposed raising the income limit for insurance eligibility to Rs 5 lakh and coverage to Rs 10 lakh, while Palaniswami has assured full government funding for major treatments such as heart surgery and cancer care.

  • Both parties have reiterated their opposition to certain aspects of the National Education Policy and pledged to protect the rights of Tamil Nadu. He has also promised to make efforts to bring education back to the state list.
