Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sara met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on Monday. This is the first time a Syrian President has attended a high -level annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in about 60 years. Last time in 1967, a Syrian President participated on this platform, when the 50 -year rule of the Assad family did not even begin.
Ahmed al-Shara removed Bashar al-Assad from power through a fast campaign in December last year, which ended the ongoing civil war for almost 14 years. Al-Shara has previously been the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a rebel organization, which was once declared by the US. However, the Trump administration has removed the tag and relaxed some old restrictions on Syria, so that the country can return to the mainstream.
America expressed confidence
During the meeting, US Secretary of State Rubio said that Syria has a historic opportunity to become a stable and sovereign nation after the relief in the restrictions by Trump. Anti-terrorism cooperation between the two leaders, the search for the missing American citizens and the Israel-Syria relations were discussed.
Al-Shara, however, ruled out the possibility of joining Abraham Accords (in which several Arab countries normalized relations with Israel). He said that Syria is a neighbor of Israel and we have faced more than 1,000 attacks. Our situation is different from other countries. He also said that talks are going on between Syria and Israel to return to the 1974 ceasefire.
Old enemies meet
Let me tell you that Al-Shara also interacted with former US General David Patrius on a global stage in New York, who was once his enemy during the Iraq war. At one time Al-Shra was in the US jail, while Patrius was a military strategist of that war.
Trump’s praise, appeal to lift the ban
During this, Al-Shara praised President Trump and said that he has taken a brave decision by removing some restrictions on Syria. He also appealed to the US to lift the remaining restrictions and said that do not kill Syrians through restrictions. The people of Syria are hardworking people, so give Syria another chance.
