Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sara, who first joined the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), gave a strict message to the world. He clarified that if Israeli does not compromise the security of Syria, the sovereignty of Syria, then the Middle East may once again be vulnerable to instability.
Shara also admitted that Syria is afraid of Israel and is not a threat to Israel. After the long rule of Bashar al-Assad, Shara came to power after being ousted from power in December and now his main agenda is to reduce tension with Israel. President Ahmed Al-Shra also alleged that Israel was intentionally avoiding negotiations and has been violating the air and ground boundaries of Syria. He bluntly said that the partition of Syria will not be acceptable under any circumstances.
America’s arbitration and the possibility of a de-escase agreement
The US is playing an active role in reducing Syria-Israeli stress. American Special Envoy Tom Barack indicated that a Di-Suscification Agreement between the two countries is almost ready. Under this proposed agreement, Israel will prevent air strikes and infiltration on Syria. Syria will not deploy heavy weapons and military equipment near Israeli border. According to Barack, this will be the first step towards a comprehensive security agreement. He expressed confidence that both sides are moving from a positive attitude.
Golan Hights and Duz Community
Golan Heights have long been the center of dispute between Syria and Israel. After the collapse of the Assad government, Israel continuously attacked the Syrian bases to weaken their military capacity. Apart from this, the increasing attacks on the Duz community in southern Syria have also spoiled the situation. Israel has intervened to protect this community. Shara clarified that his government will protect all minorities.
Trump administration and compromise obstacles
US President Donald Trump wanted the agreement to be declared soon, but it was delayed due to Jewish New Year Rosh Hashana and slow progress. US officials believe that the agreement is about 99% ready and may be announced in the next two weeks. However, Netanyahu’s stand is slightly different. He admitted that there is a new opportunity for peace, especially when Israel has caused a lot of damage to Hizbullah in Lebanon, but he also said that it would take time to finalize any agreement with Syria.
