What did Suryakumar say after the defeat?
Ahmedabad: India lost to South Africa by 76 runs in the Super-8 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. After this disappointing defeat, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted that his team could have performed better in batting. Chasing South Africa’s target of 188 runs, India collapsed to 111 runs in 18.5 overs in front of the sharp bowling of Marco Jansen (four wickets for 22 runs), Keshav Maharaj (three wickets for 24 runs) and Corbin Bosch (two wickets for 12 runs).
From the host team, only Shivam Dubey (42 runs, 37 balls, three sixes, one four) could cross the 20-run mark. Suryakumar said after the match, “We bowled very well in the beginning. He batted very well between the 7th and 15th overs and then we made a comeback. He said, “Bowled very well but could have batted better.” Sometimes you have to think that you cannot win the match in powerplay but you can lose the match. The partnerships we needed did not happen. It’s part of the game. We will learn from this and bounce back.
South Africa scored 187 runs with Miller’s fifty
Apart from scoring 63 runs in 35 balls with three sixes and seven fours, David Miller made a partnership of 97 runs in 51 balls for the fourth wicket with Dewald Brevis (45 runs, 29 balls, three sixes, three fours), due to which South Africa made a big score of 187 runs for seven wickets despite losing three wickets for 20 runs. Tristan Stubbs also played an unbeaten inning of 44 runs in 24 balls with three sixes and one four.
Suryakumar praised the fast bowling pair of Bumrah and Arshdeep. He said, “Everyone knows how dangerous their duo has been. Both bowled eight overs, took five wickets and gave 45-50 runs. He bowls well in partnerships and it is good to have him in our team. Bumrah bowled brilliantly and took three wickets for 15 runs while Arshdeep Singh took two wickets for 28 runs.
