Eight unidentified assailants opened fire indiscriminately during a social function in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday night. Two people died in the incident, while six others were injured. According to Gauteng Provincial Police, the attackers fled the scene on foot after the incident.

Six injured people were taken to a local hospital for treatment, Xinhua news agency reported. “No suspects have been arrested so far and the motive for the attack remains unknown at this stage,” according to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Brenda Muridilli. He said that the search for the suspects is ongoing and appealed to the people to help the police in the investigation.

Major attack took place despite military deployment

Police said that anyone who has any information related to this case can contact Crime Stop number 0860010111 or can give anonymous information through ‘MySAPS’ app. The incident comes as the government has deployed additional resources, including South African National Defense Force (SANDF) troops, to increase security in Eldorado Park and surrounding areas and assist with the ongoing investigation.

In a related incident, SANDF troops descended on parts of Johannesburg, including Eldorado Park and Riverlea, on March 11, 2026, in a clear display of force. The deployment is part of a nationwide plan to deploy troops to assist the South African Police Service (SAPS) in combating gangster activities, violent crime and organized criminal activities.

Incidents of gang violence have happened before too

Video of army vehicles entering the Eldorado Park area, long affected by gang violence, was widely shared on social media, sparking debate over the deployment. Earlier on June 14, 2025, nine people were shot in a shooting incident outside a mosque in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, out of which three people died.

There has been firing outside the mosque also

According to the report, this incident took place in Extension-1 area at around 9 pm. The four men were standing outside the mosque with five other youths when a white Audi car passed by and fired at the group. In another incident, a man fired indiscriminately into a crowd at Eldorado Park, killing a woman and injuring another person.

Police said that on May 14, 2025, the person approached a group of people sitting near a tuckshop in the area and suddenly without any reason started shooting towards them. Additionally, a shootout broke out between City Power security officers and a suspect in Johannesburg’s Eldorado Park after the man was trying to steal electrical cables. In this encounter, the suspect was shot and died, while his accomplice was arrested.
