
Samarjit Singh, a 21-year-old youth from Ludhiana, Punjab, went to Russia last year with dreams of a better future and helping his family. But when his body reached home after 8 months, there was mourning in the entire family and the area. Samarjeet was cremated on Friday (14 March) in Daba area of Ludhiana.
Accused of being sent to Russia on the pretext of job
According to the family, Samarjeet Singh had gone to Russia in July 2025 through some recruitment agents. The agents had assured him of a well-paid job. But the family alleges that after reaching there, he was forcibly recruited into the Russian Army.
Family members say that Samarjeet was not given any kind of military training and was sent directly to the war front. The family came to know about this when Samarjeet called from there and told about his problem.
Had gone missing since September
According to the family, they last talked to Samarjeet in September 2025. After this he went missing in the war zone. The family did not get any news about him for several months.
On Thursday, his mortal remains reached Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. From there the body was brought to Ludhiana, where his last rites were performed on Friday. As soon as the body reached home, the eyes of the family and the people around became moist.
Father’s emotional appeal
Samarjit’s father Charanjit Singh was seen standing near his son’s funeral pyre and making an emotional appeal to the people. He said that people should not send their children abroad due to false promises of agents. Charanjit Singh, who runs a small grocery shop in Amrapuri area, said that his son had gone abroad due to financial constraints.
He said that if there were good employment opportunities here, my son would never have gone abroad. He just wanted to help the family.
The crying father said that till today he does not even know how his son’s last moments were spent. The family also said that after their son’s disappearance, they sought help from the authorities for months, but they could not get any concrete help.
