Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi attacked the Modi government at the Center over the Palestine issue. He has strongly criticized the government’s stand by writing articles in The Hindu on Thursday (September 25, 2025). He wrote that India needs to demonstrate leadership on the issue of Palestine, which has now become a fight for justice, identity, honor and human rights.
Sonia Gandhi said that this style of personal diplomacy is never acceptable and it cannot be a guide to India’s foreign policy. Efforts to do so in other parts of the world, especially in the US, have failed the most painful and derogatory manner in recent months. He said that the government’s action was mainly Prime Minister Narendra Modi And Israeli’s PM Benjamin seems to be inspired by personal friendship between Netanyahu, not from the constitutional values of India or its strategic interests.
‘India supporters of two countries solutions’
Sonia Gandhi said that India has taken theoretical stance for a long time on the serious and sensitive issue of Israel-Pilistine. Emphasis has been laid on its commitment to peace and security of human rights. He said that India was one of the countries recognizing Palestine Mukti Organization (PLO) in 1974 and has been supporting 2-country solutions continuously.
India supported several UN proposals
He said that India accepts peaceful co-existence with Israel and gives its approval to become the kingdom of Palestine. India has for years has supported several United Nations resolutions that confirmed Palestinian rights and condemn the expansion of occupation of the west coast. Also, India has also maintained diplomatic relations with Israel. India has also provided humanitarian assistance to Palestine, including scholarships, education and health help for students and capacity building for institutions of Gaza and West Coast.
‘India now almost abandoned its role’
Sonia Gandhi accused the Modi government that India has almost abandoned its role since the hostility between Israel and Palestine since October 2023 in the last two years. More than 55,000 Palestinian citizens have been killed since the attack on Israeli citizens on October 7, 2023, including 17,000 children. Gazivasis have been pushed into a famine -like situation, where the Israeli army is also obstructing extremely essential things like food, medicine and other help.
He said that both the deep silence of the Modi government, both humanity and morality are abandoned. It seems that the government’s action is inspired by personal friendship between the Prime Minister and PM Modi rather than the constitutional values of India. This style of personal diplomacy is never acceptable nor can be a guide to India’s foreign policy.
