UN chief’s appeal – demand for immediate ceasefire

The UN chief has appealed for an immediate ceasefire amid the recent fierce clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan. There is increasing concern in the international community regarding the increasing tension between neighboring countries. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the increasing level of violence between the two countries. His spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that the Secretary-General is extremely concerned about the violence taking place between Afghanistan and Pakistan and its impact on civilians. According to the spokesperson, the Secretary-General has called for an immediate end to hostilities and appealed to both sides to resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomatic means.

Tension increased between the two countries

Pakistan said on Friday that it is in open war with Afghanistan. The statement came as Pakistani troops killed more than 270 Taliban fighters and injured more than 400 in air strikes in response to a cross-border attack by the Afghan Taliban, according to Islamabad.

On the other hand, Afghanistan’s Taliban government spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid claimed that Afghan forces killed 55 Pakistani soldiers and targeted important military targets inside Pakistan.

The Afghan Taliban attacked several posts near the border late on Thursday night, reportedly to avenge the air strikes carried out by Pakistan in the border areas of Afghanistan on Sunday. In response, Pakistan targeted targets in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia under ‘Operation Ghazab Al Haq’ early Friday.
