DRILLAPP Backdoor Targets Ukraine, Abuses Microsoft Edge Debugging for Stealth Espionage

0

Ukrainian entities have emerged as the target of a new campaign likely orchestrated by threat actors linked to Russia, according to a report from S2 Grupo’s LAB52 threat intelligence team.

The campaign, observed in February 2026, has been assessed to share overlaps with a prior campaign mounted by Laundry Bear (aka UAC-0190 or Void Blizzard) aimed at Ukrainian defense forces with a malware family known as PLUGGYAPE.

The attack activity “employs various judicial and charity themed lures to deploy a JavaScript‑based backdoor that runs through the Edge browser,” the cybersecurity company said. Codenamed DRILLAPP, the malware is capable of uploading and downloading files, leveraging the microphone, and capturing images through the webcam by taking advantage of the web browser’s features.

Two different versions of the campaign have been identified, with the first iteration detected in early February by making use of a Windows shortcut (LNK) file to create an HTML Application (HTA) in the temporary folder, which then loads a remote remote script hosted on Pastefy, a legitimate paste service.

To establish persistence, the LNK files are copied to the Windows Startup folder so that they are automatically launched following a system reboot. The attack chain then displays a URL containing lures related to installing Starlink or a Ukrainian charity named Come Back Alive Foundation.

The HTML file is eventually executed via the Microsoft Edge browser in headless mode, which then loads the remote obfuscated script hosted on Pastefy.

The browser is executed with additional parameters like –no-sandbox, –disable-web-security, –allow-file-access-from-files, –use-fake-ui-for-media-stream, –auto-select-screen-capture-source=true, and –disable-user-media-security, granting it access to the local file system, as well as camera, microphone, and screen capture without requiring any user interaction.

The artifact essentially functions as a lightweight backdoor to facilitate file system access and capture audio from the microphone, video from the camera, and images of the device’s screen all through the browser. It also generates a device fingerprint using a technique called canvas fingerprinting when run for the first time and uses Pastefy as a dead drop resolver to fetch a WebSocket URL used for command‑and‑control (C2) communications.

The malware transmits the device fingerprint data along with the victim’s country, which is determined from the machine’s time zone. It specifically checks if the time zones correspond to the U.K., Russia, Germany, France, China, Japan, the U.S., Brazil, India, Ukraine, Canada, Australia, Italy, Spain, and Poland. If that’s not the case, it defaults to the U.S.

The second version of the campaign, spotted in late February 2026, eschews LNK files for Windows Control Panel modules, while keeping the infection sequence largely intact. Another notable change involves the backdoor itself, which has now been upgraded to allow recursive file enumeration, batch file uploads, and arbitrary file download.

“For security reasons, JavaScript does not allow the remote downloading of files,” LAB52 said. “This is why the attackers use the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), an internal protocol of Chromium‑based browsers that can only be used when the –remote-debugging-port parameter is enabled.”

It’s believed that the backdoor is still in the initial stages of development. An early variant of the malware detected in the wild on January 28, 2026, has been observed just communicating with the domain “gnome[.]com” instead of downloading the primary payload from Pastefy.

“One of the most notable aspects is the use of the browser to deploy a backdoor, which suggests that the attackers are exploring new ways to evade detection,” the Spanish security vendor said.

“The browser is advantageous for this type of activity because it is a common and generally non‑suspicious process, it offers extended capabilities accessible through debugging parameters that enable unsafe actions such as downloading remote files, and it provides legitimate access to sensitive resources such as the microphone, camera, or screen recording without triggering immediate alerts.”

California teachers say profession has changed dramatically over 30 years

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

California teachers are warning about how the profession has changed over the past three decades, citing lack of support for teachers to address behavior issues and an overall decline in standards.

A survey from EdWeek’s 2026 installment of its State of Teaching Report, found 40% of teachers in California plan to retire or quit in the next 10 years.

Fox News Digital spoke with six California teachers, many of whom have 30 years of teaching experience or on the cusp of retirement.

“I would like to see a shift in attitude toward teachers as an authority. Teachers have, since we are the professionals, the right to make decisions, education decisions, curriculum decisions, rules, and consequences,” Tera Fowler told Fox News Digital.

Fowler, 63, plans to retire soon after teaching for over 30 years. Since she started her teaching career, she noticed students are being “coddled” more.

“The biggest change is the lack of discipline and consequences for the children and the increasing expectation of entitlement of the parents—that they are expecting more and more,” she said.

In California, the share of teachers who say they plan to retire in the next 10 years is between 40% and 49% with an estimate of 45%, Holly Kurtz, director of the Education Week Research Center, previously told Fox News Digital.

Kurtz said that California teachers are on average older than teachers in many other states, according to the most recent federal data. The average age of a California teacher is 45.5, while the average teacher age in the U.S. is 42.9. Therefore, age is likely the major reason why California teachers are more likely to say they plan to retire in the next decade than teachers in other states, according to Kurtz.

“Age is probably the number one thing. You get to about my point in the career … it doesn’t make sense to do anything else, so you stick with it until you’re too old to do something else, and then you retire,” California teacher Doug Kosak told Fox News Digital.

Kosak, 56, taught for 24 years in public school at Temecula Valley Unified School District and Mesa Unified School District. The 20-plus-year teaching veteran added that “progressive discipline” had emerged over the years, tying up his workdays.

“I can attribute this to the attitudes, the lack of discipline in the schools, inability to hold kids accountable. There are so many other factors that prevent me from doing my job effectively,” he said.

Nick Pardue, who teaches economics to seniors, also cited the lack of discipline and support for teachers to enforce standards. Responding to EdWeek’s survey results, he said the “lack of support from administrative staff and behavior issues” could be another reason driving teachers to retire.

After teaching for over 30 years, the 54-year-old echoed what others have said that the profession has changed.

“This positive behavior support where they really didn’t want any negative punishments for students who were acting out or misbehaving. So they were looking for positive interventions with the idea that students—every once in a while—they lose themselves,” Pardue said.

According to the EdWeek report, 36% of teachers nationwide, say they plan to retire in the next ten years. Kurtz explained that there is evidence that indicates that teacher morale has been declining across the country and is at, by some measures, “the lowest point in recent memory.”

Pardue, an Army veteran, believes teachers are encouraged to pass kids, regardless of what their skill levels are.

“They also like having a dashboard for certain kids and ethnicities. That became a huge priority. So there’s a lot of politics that got infused into teaching that I think created a lot of problems,” he said.

Steve Campos, who has been teaching for over 30 years, said student behavior has gotten worse.

CONSERVATIVE ICON RIPS TEACHERS’ UNIONS AS SCHOOLS TURN INTO ‘PROPAGANDA AGENCIES’

“Times have changed,” Campos, 54, told Fox News Digital. “The lack of discipline sometimes—just student behavior. It’s not like it used to be. There’s been a big change and a big difference in what we’re asked to do—what we are dealing with. Yeah, it’s just kind of spiraling quickly.”

Jennifer Stoeber, who is getting ready to retire soon after teaching for 30 years, told Fox News Digital that the curriculum has become more “inclusive” over the years.

“Our curriculum has changed and become more inclusive, in some ways good—putting more emphasis on areas instead of teaching the curriculum as it used to be,” Stoeber said. “In our social studies books, we focus more on inclusive issues on other cultures and not so much on our history itself.”

In California, the share of teachers who say they plan to retire in the next 10 years is between 40% and 49% with an estimate of 45%, Holly Kurtz, director of the Education Week Research Center, told Fox News Digital.

Gevin Harrison, who started teaching 14 years ago after a 24 year in the Air Force, discussed how teachers would reinforce values that were being taught at home.

“I consider myself a newbie. So I’m not really sure if I would be able to track any change,” Harrison said.  “If I was going to mark the change, I would probably compare the years that I’ve been teaching with the years that I was in high school.”

“Teachers used to reinforce the values that you would learn at home and chances are, if you got in trouble at school, your parents were going to be ticked because they were all on the same sheet of music,” he added.

Israeli military launches ‘ground operations’ in southern Lebanon | News

The Israeli army says its forces are striking key sites in southern Lebanon, as fierce clashes with Hezbollah continue near the town of Khiam.

The Israeli military says its troops have begun ground operations in southern Lebanon as fighting against Hezbollah intensifies around the strategic southern town of Khiam.

At least three air strikes struck the city of Khiam, Al Jazeera Arabic reported on Monday.

Khiam, a stronghold of Hezbollah, is strategically located and is seen as a gateway to southern Lebanon. The latest war started after Hezbollah fired rockets in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Hezbollah had not attacked Israel since the 2024 ceasefire despite repeated Israeli violations of the United States-brokered deal.

On Monday morning, two Israeli air raids targeted the town of Yater, Al Jazeera Arabic reported. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Israel also launched raids on Burj Qalawiya, Sultaniya and Chaqra, also in southern Lebanon, according to Al Jazeera Arabic. Two raids were also conducted on the towns of Qantara and as-Sawana.

The Israeli army, in a post on X, said on Monday that its troops in recent days were “focused on ground operations on key targets in southern Lebanon to expand the forward defence area”.

“This operation is part of the effort to establish the forward defence, which includes destroying terrorist infrastructure and eliminating terrorists,” it added.

Importance of Khiam

Khiam sits on high ground just a few kilometres from the Israeli border and the Litani River, giving it a commanding view over northern Israel and nearby Lebanese plains.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr said a “major battle was under way” in and around Khiam. “The elevation of Khiam for both sides gives them a strategic advantage,” she said.

Moreover, Khodr noted the town lies on a “long and important junction … a road that leads to the eastern and western sectors of southern Lebanon”.

“One of the roads leads to the Bekaa Valley too in eastern Lebanon, another area where Hezbollah has influence,” she said.

“What Israel has been trying to do is really cut the supply lines and the difficult capabilities of Hezbollah, so it’s unable to bring in more weapons and fighters to areas south of the Litani River.”

More than 800,000 people, including women and children, have been forced to flee from their homes as the Israeli army issued evacuation orders for many neighbourhoods in southern Lebanon, as well as the capital, Beirut.

Israeli attacks in Lebanon have so far killed at least 850 people, among them 107 children and 66 women.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A new Fox Nation special goes into the harrowing case of Chris Watts’ plot to murder his pregnant wife and their two young daughters.

The new special will be available to watch on Fox One starting on March 16.

Watts was sentenced in November 2018 to life without parole for the murders of his wife, Shanann Watts, 34, and their daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3.

Watts, then 33, pleaded guilty to all charges against him in exchange for prosecutors not pursuing the death penalty, the Weld County District Attorney’s office said.

Immediately after the crime, in August 2018, Watts told responding officers from the Frederick Police Department in Colorado that his wife and two young daughters had up and “vanished.”

“My kids are my life,” he told KMGH. “I mean, those smiles light up my life. When I came home and then walked in the house, nothing. Vanished. Nothing was here.”

A break in the case came after a neighbor provided home security video showing Chris backing up his truck into the driveway early in the morning the day Shanann and the children disappeared. The video did not show Shanann or the children leaving.

Along with the video, authorities also tracked Watts’ digital footprint, including his cell phone data and GPS tracking data.

Shanann Watts' body found near oil tanks.

According to court documents, Shanann Watts’ body was found in a shallow grave near this oil tank on August 21, 2018, near Roggen, Colorado. Both of her daughter’s bodies, 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste, were submerged for days in the same oil tanks in rural eastern Colorado, prosecutors said. After failing a polygraph on August 15, 2018, he confessed during an interview. He led investigators to an oil and gas site operated by Anadarko Petroleum near Roggen, Colorado, where the bodies were recovered.

Shanann Watts, who was approximately 15 weeks pregnant at the time, was found in a shallow grave.

Bella and Celeste were found, authorities said, inside separate crude oil storage tanks at the same site. Their bodies were recovered after the tanks were drained.

Watts confessed that he strangled Shanann in their bed after he told her their marriage was over, and she said he would never see their children again. Watts said his wife correctly suspected that he was having an affair, but he did not tell her about his ongoing relationship with a co-worker before killing Shanann.

Authorities have speculated that Watts wanted a chance to start over with the woman. Watts told investigators that the woman “never asked him to get rid of his family” but their relationship may have “contributed” to his actions.

After he strangled Shanann, Watts said Bella came into their bedroom clutching a blanket and asked what was wrong with her mother. Watts claimed his wife wasn’t feeling well. Their daughter continued watching as Watts wrapped the body in a bedsheet and began crying when he pulled it down the stairs of their home, he said.

Watts said he put her body on the floor of his truck’s back seat. When he went inside, Celeste was also awake.

According to Watts, he put the girls into the backseat of the truck, where they occasionally napped on each other’s laps as he drove.

Watts claimed he had no plan for his daughters but drove to an oil work site about 40 miles east of the family’s home. He worked there as an operator for an oil and gas producer. He told police he pulled Shanann’s body from the truck as the girls asked, “What are you doing to mommy?”

Watts confessed he went back to the truck and used Celeste’s blanket to smother her as Bella watched from a seat beside her sister. He then put Celeste’s body inside an oil tank before returning to the truck and smothering Bella using the same blanket. Her last words were, “Daddy, no!” he told police, adding that Bella struggled under the blanket. He said he put her body inside another oil tank and buried Shanann’s body nearby.

West Sussex County Council pushes back Oracle rollout again • The Register

0

West Sussex County Council has once again delayed the implementation of Oracle Fusion for HR and payroll – set to replace an aging SAP system – following a series of setbacks that have seen expected costs swell to more than 15 times the original estimate.

In a notice to schools, the council said the program team had reviewed the previously planned April implementation date and confirmed that Oracle Fusion would now be implemented in October 2026.

“This revised timeline reflects the scale of the change, impacting over 20,000 users, and the need to ensure a safe, stable system with a reliable and accurate payroll, particularly for schools and term-time employees,” it said.

In January, the council’s Performance & Finance Scrutiny Committee said the Oracle Fusion finance and procurement system was deployed earlier that month to 917 users in line with the “approved timeline,” which was itself a revised timeline. It was supposed to go live in 2021.

The Register has reported that, as well as being responsible for delays and overspending, the council has taken the step of allowing capital receipts – mainly from the sell-off of council buildings – to fund the project.

In January, documents released to a council committee show the expected use of funds from the sell-off is set to triple in the current financial year compared to a year earlier, up from £4 million in 2024/25 to £12 million in 2025/26.

In November 2019, the southern English authority, which manages a budget of around £2.3 billion annually, agreed to spend £2.6 million on moving off its legacy SAP system onto Oracle Fusion, a report to the committee said in 2024. It later decided it needed more suppliers to help change its business processes and reset the budget to £14.07 million, including £7 million in March 2021 and £7.07 million in October 2022. Systems integrator DXC began working with the council on the project under a five-year, £4 million contract in May 2020. Auditors EY later said there were “weaknesses regarding budgeting, governance and risk management.”

In July 2023, the council found there was no real prospect of a deliverable plan being agreed. It terminated the agreement with DXC on September 1, 2023, despite the company winning a lucrative contract variation. Published data detailing council spending shows that throughout its time working with the council on the project, DXC was paid around £6.6 million, more than 50 percent above the original contract price. The company was approached for comment at the time.

In a statement earlier this year, a spokesperson for the council said the total estimated cost for the program is around £41 million, comprised of the initial £14.07 million spent during the earlier phases and the current approved budget of £27.048 million for its completion.

“We generate capital receipts from the sale of assets and routinely sell assets that we no longer have an operational use for. West Sussex County Council has made a financial choice to use the receipts available to help fund the implementation of Oracle,” they said. ®

Fire in the city of Cuttack likely caused by a short circuit, which is common in India due to poorly maintained wiring.

At least 10 people have been killed in a fire that broke out ‌in the trauma care unit of a hospital in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, officials say.

The fire, which started early on Monday on the first floor of the SCB Medical College and Hospital in the city of Cuttack, was likely caused by a short circuit, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi ‌told reporters after visiting the hospital.

At least 11 staff members suffered burns as they tried to save patients.

“Medical staff and security personnel risked their lives in rescuing the patients,” Majhi said. “During this, they too sustained injuries, and they too are under treatment.”

The chief minister added that he had ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident and said strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible.

Twenty-three patients had been receiving medical care in the intensive care unit and 10 of them died while being shifted to a safer area away from the fire. Five people were critically wounded, but it was not clear if it was from the fire or earlier injuries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “deeply painful” in a post on social media and offered his condolences to the families of the victims.

He also announced compensation of $2,160 to affected families.

Building fires are common in India due to a lack of firefighting equipment and a routine disregard for safety regulations. Electrical short circuits, often caused by poorly maintained wiring, remain the leading cause of fires.

In 2024, a fire at a private hospital in the southern state of Tamil Nadu killed at least six people and injured more than two dozen.

The same year, 10 newborns were killed when a fire engulfed a hospital in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. At least 24 people, including many children, also died in a fire that broke out at a family entertainment venue in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

Rep. Jill Tokuda explains why she didn’t stand during Trump’s viral SOTU moment

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Rep. Jill Tokuda, D-Hawaii, said she had no hesitations about remaining in her seat at the 2026 State of the Union when President Donald Trump challenged lawmakers to stand if they agreed the U.S. government should prioritize its citizens’ safety over that of illegal aliens.

Like every single one of her Democratic colleagues, Tokuda, a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, stayed put as Republicans stood for over a minute and a half, applauding in a show of support for the president’s statement.

A voter approached Tokuda about the moment two weeks later, pressing her on why she didn’t stand.

“The statement was: ‘The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.’ I noticed you did not stand,” a voter who identified herself as Arline said.

“I’d like to know your reasoning why you did not stand.”

After a brief smattering of applause from the audience, Tokuda thanked Arline for the question, noting that lawmakers don’t always get easy questions at town hall events.

“But that decision was easy for me,” Tokuda said.

She said her reaction was based on her interpretation of Trump’s challenge, stating that she believed the president had no intention of fielding the support for the statement.

“If it had been a genuine question, a true question — not a ploy to be able to put on some commercial later on to say ‘look at all those Democrats who don’t believe in protecting Americans’ — I absolutely would have stood,” Tokuda said.

Tokuda did not reference the moment in her immediate reactions to the State of the Union.

Instead, on her website, she focused on Trump’s tariffs.

“If you consider tariffs and the hundreds of billions of dollars that tariffs have taxed on everyday Americans … the hundreds of billions of dollars he’s collecting in tariffs have been a tax on everyday people,” Tokuda said, highlighting comments made to a local outlet.

In the past, Tokuda has criticized Trump’s immigration crackdown efforts for hitting close to home.

“We’re all one degree of separation from knowing somebody who is right now living in fear, worried that they could be picked up off the streets or they could be deported, even if they have no grounds to,” Tokuda told the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) last year.
