Woman charged over death of two eight-year-old girls after Wimbledon car crash | UK news

0

The driver of a car that crashed into a south London primary school has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after two eight-year-old girls were killed.

Claire Freemantle is accused of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and seven counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after the incident at The Study Prep school in Wimbledon in July 2023.

Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau died in the fatal collision as the school was celebrating the last day of the summer term.

Freemantle’s lawyers have indicated she will plead not guilty to the charges when she appears at Westminster magistrates’ court on 16 June.

The charges come after the girls’ families criticised Scotland Yard for its investigation into the crash, with the force saying in June 2024 the driver had suffered an epileptic seizure and would face no criminal charges.

Freemantle, of Wimbledon, was rearrested and released under investigation in January last year. Her lawyers have said there are “serious questions to be answered” over why the decision not to charge her was reversed in a statement issued after she was charged.

The families of Nuria and Selena said they were “right to challenge” the decision not to charge.

“In June 2024, we rejected the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to take no further action because we did not believe that decision had been made on the full facts. We were right to challenge that decision,” they told the BBC.

“The Metropolitan police specialist crime review group’s findings, the reopening of the investigation, and the need to obtain extensive new evidence over the last two years, have all vindicated our position.

“From the very beginning, we have demanded one thing: the truth about why our daughters were killed. We have lived every day since then in torment – without peace, without answers, and without accountability. Despite overwhelming grief, we have been forced to fight for the most basic clarity about what happened.

“With the decision to charge Freemantle, the case will now proceed to trial. We are one step closer to understanding why Nuria and Selena were killed and why so many others were harmed.”

The Met police apologised for the way it had initially dealt with the incident and the “impact on those affected” – adding it would be “fundamentally resetting how the Met investigates fatal and serious collisions”.

Freemantle’s lawyers have said the defendant was “utterly devastated” after the two girls’ deaths, but had “no recollection” of what happened.

The statement, from Mark Jones at Payne Hicks Beach LLP on behalf of Freemantle, read: “As a mother of school-aged children herself, Claire will be tortured for the rest of her life by the dreadful loss and injury resulting from the unimaginable tragedy of that day.

“She remains utterly devastated by the appalling consequences for all those so tragically affected.

“We believe that initial decision by the CPS was the right one in these tragic circumstances and that there are serious questions to be answered about the reasons for its reversal today.”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is now investigating officers for alleged racism in their handling of the case. The watchdog previously said it was investigation allegations that officers provided “false and misleading information” to the families after complaints about the standard of the investigation.

Four serving officers, including a commander and a detective chief inspector, are being investigated for gross misconduct.

USF doctoral student Nahida Bristy identified after remains found in Tampa

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Human remains discovered Sunday, April 26, near a bridge in Tampa Bay have been identified as missing University of South Florida doctoral student Nahida Bristy, authorities said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that after analyzing DNA, dental records and clothing, the remains were confirmed to be Bristy.

“We have located Nahida Bristy,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said during the conference. “We have contacted her family. We are now actively working to release both bodies for religious reasons back to the families who live in Bangladesh.”

Bristy and fellow University of South Florida doctoral student Zamil Limon were last seen April 16, vanishing within hours of each other. Limon’s remains were discovered on the Howard Frankland Bridge on Friday, April 24.

“While this identification brings answers, it also brings immense sorrow. Nahida Bristy and Zamil Limon were not only students, they were driven, accomplished individuals destined and deserving of great futures,” Chronister said. “We extend our condolences to their loved ones as they face this painful reality. We are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring that justice is pursued in their name.”

Hisham Abugharbieh, Limon’s roommate, is in custody and has been charged with both murders, authorities said.

The 26-year-old faces charges including domestic violence simple battery, domestic violence false imprisonment, tampering with evidence, failure to report a death to the medical examiner’s office or law enforcement, and unlawfully holding or moving a human dead body in unapproved conditions.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Bristy was last seen on surveillance video at the University of South Florida at 12:00 p.m., and was reported missing the following day by a friend to the USF Police Department. Limon was reported missing the next day, and authorities later took over the investigation on April 22.

Investigators later searched Limon’s apartment, where they found his student ID, eyeglasses, a shirt with blood and tears and phone cases belonging to both victims. Authorities also deployed a marine unit and dive team to search areas tied to the last known GPS signals from the victims’ phones.

On Sunday, April 26, kayakers discovered the remains in mangroves near Interstate 275 and 4th Street North after a fishing line became caught on a trash bag. Authorities said the remains were in an advanced state of decomposition and required several days to identify.

Detectives said the investigation revealed blood evidence inside the apartment shared by Limon and the suspect, and they are continuing to work to determine a motive in what officials described as an active and ongoing investigation.

Rebel checkpoints reported around Mali’s capital, northern town seized | Conflict News

0

Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and Tuareg separatists continue their attacks against Mali’s military government.

Al-Qaeda-linked rebel fighters have reportedly set up checkpoints around Mali’s capital, Bamako, and seized the town of Tessalit in the north.

Reuters reported on Friday that Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has called on Malians to rise up to “bring down the junta”, and adopt Islamic law.

The latest developments come days after a series of attacks by JNIM and Tuareg separatists from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) resulted in the killing of the country’s defence minister, Sadio Camara.

Videos shared on social media by local accounts on Friday show armed fighters inside the Amachach base in Tessalit, with several military vehicles seen driving around.

Video verified by Reuters shows fighters driving through the town and raising the FLA flag.

Media outlets close to the Azawad armed movement, which seeks the independence of northern Mali, said the scenes show fighters in control of the base following the withdrawal of elements of the army and Russia’s African Corps, according to their description.

Russia is the principal foreign backer of Mali’s military-run government.

JNIM said on Thursday that it had captured the base of Hombori in central Mali and taken over two checkpoints near Bamako, after earlier threatening to completely besiege the city.

Russia’s African Corps said in a statement that the JNIM statement about the abandonment of the Hombori base was “not true”.

It said that its helicopters delivered ammunition and other items to Malian military personnel at a base in Hombori on Thursday, “after which soldiers of the Malian Armed Forces injured in battles with terrorists were evacuated”.

It noted that JNIM and AFL “continue to regroup, conduct reconnaissance of the bases of the units of the African Corps of the Russian Armed Forces and the Malian Army, and propaganda work is actively underway aimed at reducing the morale of the Malian Army”.

Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque, reporting from Dakar in Senegal, reports that the absence of a response from the Malian military to the rebel advances is surprising, and that four major military camps in the north of the country are now in the hands of armed groups.

“That’s a big development,” Haque said. “It seems that Malian forces are not even putting up a fight up north.”

Mali’s military leaders seized power in coups in 2020 and 2021, with a brief period of civilian rule in between. Official authorities are yet to issue a statement on the latest reports at the time of writing.

Prosecutors say Charlie Kirk shooting defense misled public with ATF claim

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Utah prosecutors are accusing Tyler Robinson’s defense team of misleading the public in court filings before attempting to have authorities sanctioned for trying to “set the record straight.”

In an ironic twist, prosecutors also noted the defense’s claim had gone viral after being picked up in the media.

Robinson’s lawyers have previously complained coverage of the case put his right to a fair trial at risk and have a pending motion to have news cameras barred from future court proceedings.

ERIKA KIRK SAYS SHE DOESN’T WANT TO BE THE ONE TO DECIDE IF HUSBAND’S KILLER GETS DEATH PENALTY

Deputy Utah County Attorney Christopher Ballard’s motion came in response to a defense push to have prosecutors sanctioned for speaking on the issue outside of the courtroom.

He argued that prosecutors have done nothing wrong because while court rules, like Utah Rule of Professional Conduct 3.6(c), and a gag order limit what can be said about the case, they allow attorneys on both sides to “set the record straight.”

Read the filing:

Robinson’s defense lawyers, in a court filing, asserted that “the ATF was unable to identify the bullet recovered at autopsy to the rifle allegedly tied to Mr. Robinson.”

CHARLIE KIRK ASSASSINATION: LEGAL EXPERT UNPACKS DEFENSE CHALLENGES AND WHY EVIDENCE SECRECY COULD BE CRUCIAL

The claim, which Ballard described as misleading and “misstated,” generated millions of views from just one report — and inspired additional coverage in local and national media, the prosecutor wrote.

It also fanned the flames of unverified claims that other people could have been responsible for Kirk’s murder.

But the defense left out a crucial piece of context, according to Ballard.

“The ATF was unable to identify or exclude the bullet as having been fired from the rifle,” he wrote, emphasizing the missing information in italics.

“Defendant reinforced this misleading inference by following it up with, ‘the defense may very well decide to offer the testimony of the ATF firearm analyst as exculpatory evidence,'” he added.

In response, members of the prosecution team attempted to provide more context in public interviews, explaining the ATF’s conclusions while noting the defendant was innocent until proven guilty, Ballard wrote.

Judge Tony Graf Jr. eventually unsealed the ATF report in order to give the public direct access to the source material.

Ballard asked the judge to deny the defense motion and their request to have prosecutors turn over internal communications, which he argued are privileged work products.

An appendix to the ATF report explained that “inconclusive” findings mean that it was “an examiner’s opinion that there is an insufficient quality and/or quantity of individual characteristics to identify or exclude.”

Experts have told Fox News Digital that it’s not unusual for a bullet to disintegrate on impact, making ballistic identification unlikely.

However, prosecutors have recovered a spent casing that is both consistent with the bullet and the alleged murder weapon.

Shortly before Kirk’s assassination, Robinson allegedly climbed to a rooftop across the courtyard from where Kirk was speaking and fired a single shot from his grandfather’s Mauser rifle.

Police recovered the rifle wrapped in a blanket in a patch of woods near campus. And prosecutors have said that text messages between Robinson and his romantic partner, Lance Twiggs, allegedly discuss wanting to retrieve the rifle.

“Stuck in Orem for a little while longer yet,” Robinson allegedly wrote in the hours after the murder. “Shouldn’t be long until I can come home, but I gotta grab my rifle still.”

Twiggs is cooperating with investigators and has not been charged with a crime.

Robinson could face the death penalty if convicted of the top charge against him, aggravated murder.

Oscars changes allow for double acting nominations while banning AI | Oscars

0

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a number of major changes for the Oscars on Friday, including a new policy allowing multiple nominations for a single actor in one category, as well as barring acting and writing awards for work done by AI.

According to new statutes decreed by the group’s board of governors, only performances “demonstrably performed” by humans with their consent will be eligible for acting Oscars, while only human-authored screenplays can be up for any writing awards.

The clearer policy appears to address questions of eligibility raised by the posthumous completion of a performance by Val Kilmer, who died in 2025, using AI. The academy also retained the right to request more information about a film’s use of AI.

In a notable shake-up of the now-standard Oscar campaign season, actors may henceforth be nominated for multiple performances in the same category. For decades, it was not possible for an actor to be nominated twice for, say, best actor; if a single performer gave multiple performances that earned enough academy votes to be in the top five for the category, only their highest-tallying performance would receive the nomination.

The new change puts acting awards in line with other categories — in 2001, for example, Steven Soderbergh was nominated for best director for both Erin Brockovich and Traffic, winning for the latter.

Additionally, the academy revised its longstanding policy that the category of best international feature (formerly best foreign film) only consider one film per country or region, as determined by a local academy-approved selection committee. From now on, a non-English language film can qualify by winning the top prize at one of several major film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Busan, Sundance, Toronto and Venice. A single country can now also have more than one film nominated in the category.

In another major change, the award for best international feature will now be credited to the director, rather than the country of origin. Though the Norwegian director Joachim Trier directed Sentimental Value, which won the category this year, the award technically went to Norway. Directors’ names will henceforth be included on trophies and in the record books.

The academy also introduced a number of smaller tweaks, such as increasing the number of people eligible for best casting per film from two to three, and solidifying the shortlist for best cinematography at 20.

The 99th Oscars will be held on Sunday 14 March in 2027, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Beginning in 2029, the show will move to the Peacock Theater for the subsequent 10 years, and shift its broadcast from ABC to YouTube.

New Jersey Dem Tina Shah backs taxpayer-funded transgender healthcare for kids

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A progressive candidate aiming to unseat a vulnerable Republican in a battleground House district is leaning into a politically fraught issue that has dogged the Democratic Party.

Tina Shah, an ER physician and former Biden administration official, appeared to back taxpayer-funded sex change procedures for minors in a video obtained by Fox News Digital.

When asked whether children should have the “right to transgender healthcare,” Shah replied, “This is a no-brainer.”

“Healthcare is a right, period,” the New Jersey Democrat added. “It includes transgender children.”

MODERATE DEM’S TOP AIDE RESIGNS AFTER LAWMAKER’S COMMENTS ON ‘FORMERLY MALE’ ATHLETES

Shah is one of four relatively well-funded Democrats vying to take on Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., in November’s midterm elections. Kean’s suburban swing seat is considered one of the most competitive House districts in the country.

Shah’s apparent embrace of “transgender healthcare” for minors aligns with the views of her former boss, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, who denounced Republican-led states cracking down on child sex-change procedures during the Biden administration. Shah served as a senior advisor to Murthy in 2021 and 2022.

The National Republican Congressional Committee, House Republicans’ campaign arm, sharply criticized Shah’s support for “transgender healthcare” for children in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Radical Democrat Tina Shah said it loud and clear: She’d be a vote for radical policies like sex changes for minors and taxpayer-funded drag queens,” NRCC spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole said. “Shah is completely out of step with Garden State families.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Shah’s campaign prior to publication.

Shah’s remarks come as some Democrats have blamed the party’s lurch to the left on the issue for its poor performance in the 2024 election.

Major medical groups, which previously offered full-throated support for child sex changes, have also largely retreated from the issue, with the American Medical Association in February saying those procedures should be generally postponed to adulthood.

Still, Democrats in Congress have not made a clear attempt to calibrate on transgender issues.

Just a handful of Democrats crossed party lines in 2025 to vote for GOP-authored legislation that would have criminalized child sex changes. Kean was among nearly all Republicans who supported the bill.

TOP SCHOOL DISTRICT PUT ON NOTICE AS WATCHDOG GROUP THREATENS LEGAL ACTION OVER GENDER POLICY

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates Kean’s re-election bid a “toss-up.” The election prognosticator downgraded the race for Republicans last year after Gov. Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J., carried the swing district by two points.

Shah entered April with nearly $1.4 million in the bank, according to recent Federal Election Commission filings. Navy veteran Rebecca Bennett and businessman Brian Valera, who are also vying for the Democratic nomination ahead of the June primary, have posted similar fundraising numbers.

Kean’s campaign notably dwarfs the field with roughly $3.4 million cash on hand.

The GOP incumbent, who fended off a competitive Democratic challenge in 2024, has come under recent scrutiny for a prolonged absence from Congress due to an unspecified health issue.

Kean has missed 52 roll call votes in the House since March 17, amounting to a 100% absence rate, according to GovTrack, a website that monitors congressional activities.

“My doctors continue to assure me that my recovery will be complete and that I will be back to the job I love very soon,” he said in a statement last week. “I expect to return to a full schedule and be at 100 percent.”

30,000 Facebook Accounts Hacked via Google AppSheet Phishing Campaign

Ravie LakshmananMay 01, 2026Malware / Threat Intelligence

A newly discovered Vietnamese-linked operation has been observed using a Google AppSheet as a “phishing relay” to distribute phishing emails with an aim to compromise Facebook accounts.

The activity has been codenamed AccountDumpling by Guardio, with the scheme selling the stolen accounts back through an illicit storefront run by the threat actors. In all, roughly 30,000 Facebook accounts are estimated to have been hacked as part of the campaign.

“What we found wasn’t a single phishing kit,” security researcher Shaked Chen wrote in a report shared with The Hacker News. “It was a living operation with real-time operator panels, advanced evasion, continuous evolution and a criminal-commercial loop that quietly feeds on the same accounts it helps steal back.”

The findings are just the latest example of how Vietnamese threat actors continue to embrace various tactics to gain unauthorized access to victims’ Facebook accounts, which are then sold on underground ecosystems for monetary gain.

The starting point of the latest attacks is a phishing email targeting Facebook Business account owners, claiming to be from Meta Support and urging them to submit an appeal, or risk getting their account permanently deleted. The emails are sent from a Google AppSheet address (“noreply@appsheet.com”), allowing them to bypass spam filters.

This false sense of urgency is used to direct users to a fake web page designed to harvest their credentials. It’s worth noting that a similar campaign was reported by KnowBe4 in May 2025.

Over the past few weeks, these campaigns have adopted various kinds of lures designed to induce a “Meta-related panic.” These range from account disablement and copyright complaints to verification review, executive recruitment, and Facebook login alerts. The four main clusters identified by Guardio are listed below –

  • Netlify-hosted Facebook help center pages that enable account takeover attacks, in addition to collecting dates of birth, phone numbers, and government-issued ID photos. The data is ultimately forwarded to an attacker-controlled Telegram channel.
  • Blue badge evaluation lures that guide victims to Vercel-hosted “Security Check” or “Meta | Privacy Center” pages that are gated by a bogus CAPTCHA check before directing users to the phishing landing page to collect contact details, business information, credentials (after a forced retry), and two-factor authentication (2FA) codes and exfiltrate them to a Telegram channel.
  • Google Drive-hosted PDFs masquerading as instructions to complete account verification to direct users to collect passwords, 2FA codes, government ID photos, and browser screenshots through html2canvas. The PDF documents are generated using a free Canva account.
  • Fake job offers that impersonate companies like WhatsApp, Meta, Adobe, Pinterest, Apple, and Coca-Cola to build rapport with the recipients and ask them to join a call or continue the discussion on attacker-controlled sites.

Cumulatively, the Telegram channels associated with the first three clusters have been found to hold about 30,000 victim records, most of whom are located in the U.S., Italy, Canada, the Philippines, India, Spain, Australia, the U.K., Brazil, and Mexico, and have been locked out of their own accounts.

As for who is behind the operation, the smoking gun evidence has come from the PDFs generated as part of the third cluster using the free Canva account, with metadata listing a Vietnamese name “PHẠM TÀI TÂN” as the files’ author. Further open-source intelligence has led to the discovery of a website (“phamtaitan[.]vn”), where they offer digital marketing services.

In a post shared on X in February 2023, the website’s handle said it “specializes in providing digital marketing services, marketing resources, and consulting on effective digital marketing strategies.”

“Taken together, they form a consistent picture of a large, Vietnamese-based, mega operation,” Chen said. “This campaign is bigger than a single AppSheet abuse. It’s a window into the dark market around stolen Facebook assets, where access, business identity, ad reputation, and even account recovery have all become tradable commodities. Another entry in the pattern we keep surfacing: trusted platforms repurposed as delivery, hosting, and monetization layers.”

Photos: Cuba holds May Day celebrations amid US threats | Protests News

0

Cuban electrical and petroleum workers have marched in Havana to celebrate International Workers’ Day, or May Day, as the government pledges to stand firm against growing US pressure which is further straining the economy.

Ninety-four-year-old former leader Raul Castro and President Miguel Diaz-Canel took part in the celebrations in the capital on Friday, while the administration of US President Donald Trump announced further sanctions.

A White House statement said the sanctions would target those involved in the security services, along with “material supporters of the Cuban government”. The statement added, without evidence, that the Caribbean island serves as a “safe haven for transnational terrorist groups” such as the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

A US energy blockade has already battered the country’s struggling economy and contributed to widespread energy blackouts.

“We are living through difficult times,” said Yunier Merino Reyes, an accountant with the Electric Union who joined Friday’s march to celebrate his colleagues. “We are carrying out a very tough, arduous and relentless effort — day and night — to provide electricity to the people who need it,” he told the Associated Press.

The Trump administration has frequently threatened Cuba with military attacks in addition to greater economic pressure.

“Today Cuba demonstrated once again that this people does not give up, and that we will defend our homeland tooth and nail, even though we want peace,” Milagros Morales, a 34-year-old Havana resident who took part in the march, told Reuters.
