Iran’s Khamenei maintains tough rhetoric with US despite nuclear talks | Conflict News

Tehran, Iran – Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has shot back at United States President Donald Trump and cast a pessimistic tone on negotiations with his administration even as Iran’s foreign minister says an understanding on “the guiding principles” of a deal has been reached.

The 86-year-old Khamenei said on Tuesday that Trump admitted that the US has tried to bring down the theocratic establishment in Iran since the country’s 1979 Islamic revolution but has failed.

“This is a good confession. You will not be able to do this either,” Khamenei said in an apparent reference to the US president telling reporters this week that a change in government would be “the best thing that could happen” in Iran.

Khamenei also used religious symbolism to draw parallels with figures who fought against Shia Muslim imams more than 1,350 years ago to cast doubt on any meaningful rapprochement with the US today. He said the Iranian nation “will not pledge allegiance to corrupt leaders like those who are in power in America today” based on religious beliefs.

“They say let us negotiate over your nuclear energy, and the result of the negotiation should be that you must not have this energy,” Khamenei said before adding that if any real negotiations were to take place, they cannot be predicated on any “foolish” demand that Iran move to zero enrichment of uranium.

His comments came hours before a statement made by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi after the conclusion of indirect talks with the US in Geneva.

“I can say, compared to the last round, we’ve had very serious discussions, and there was a constructive atmosphere where we exchanged our point of view,” Araghchi told reporters after the talks. “Those ideas were discussed, and we came to some agreements and some guiding principles. We will eventually draft a document. … We are hopeful we can achieve this.”

The message from the Iranian negotiating team through state media on Tuesday was that Tehran is “serious” about the indirect talks mediated by Oman and wants to see results – particularly the lifting of harsh US sanctions imposed after Trump in 2018 unilaterally withdrew from a nuclear deal that Iran had reached with world powers three years earlier.

For the US, which was also holding parallel talks with Ukraine and Russia in Switzerland, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner acted as lead representatives.

Both teams had separate meetings with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi as well as Rafael Grossi, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) who will have to lead any potential future inspection missions of Iranian nuclear sites bombed by the US in June during a 12-day war between Israel and Iran.

‘Hard to be optimistic’

Washington has insisted that no uranium enrichment may take place inside Iran. It has also said Tehran must hand over its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, which are believed to be buried under the rubble of the US air strikes in June, and limit its missile programme. Along with Israel, the US has sought an end to Iran’s support for the “axis of resistance”, the armed groups it backs in Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen and Palestine.

All these demands have been rejected by Iran, which said they cross “red lines” and undermine the country’s rights and security.

Instead, the Iranian team has proposed to dilute the uranium and to include the US in the potential economic benefits of any agreement.

Addressing a meeting of the leaders of the Iran Chamber of Commerce on Sunday, Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Hamid Ghanbari said the Trump administration would have to be offered deals in “areas with high economic output that can be achieved quicker”.

He suggested Iran could sell energy to the US, work on joint oil- and gasfields and minerals, or even buy aircraft from the US, but he did not say how Tehran believed such agreements could be achieved given the clashing positions offered by the two sides.

Iran’s currency, the rial, depreciated slightly after the indirect talks in Geneva ended on Tuesday after just over three hours. One US dollar was worth about 1.63 million rials on Tuesday, near an all-time low registered last month after a deadly crackdown against nationwide antigovernment protests and threats of war.

“It is hard to be optimistic about these negotiations that wrapped up very quickly. These are extremely complex subjects. Remember that it took two and a half years to negotiate the 2015 nuclear deal,” Ali Vaez, director at the International Crisis Group, told Al Jazeera.

“These talks usually require a lot of patience, a lot of focus, a lot of back and forth, a lot of discussions with experts. So if they wrap up this quickly, this is either a sign that the negotiators don’t have the patience that is required to reach an agreement or the gaps are simply too large to bridge.”

Shutting down the Strait of Hormuz

Beyond the rhetoric, developments on the ground also showed the two sides are no closer to reaching an agreement.

The US is still in the process of amassing soldiers and military equipment in the region with a second aircraft carrier on the way and more air defence systems positioned in multiple countries to fight against potential Iranian missile and drone attacks in case of a conflict.

Khamenei suggested Iran possesses weapons that can “sink” an aircraft carrier and “slap” the largest military in the world to the ground as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) staged military exercises in the Strait of Hormuz.

IRGC navy chief Alireza Tangsiri told state television from the deck of a warship that if Iranian leaders order it, his forces are ready to make good on a longstanding threat to close down the strategic waterway, through which roughly 20 percent of global oil and gas supplies flow.

The IRGC said the strait was closed for several hours on Tuesday as its forces conducted the naval exercises. State television showed missiles being fired from warships and the shore to hit vessels at sea.

This comes as the US has also expressed a focus on hitting the ghost fleet of ships used by Iran to sell its oil, mostly to China, in defiance of Washington’s sanctions. The Trump administration has also threatened a 20-percent tariff on countries trading with Iran.

Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, met with Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov on Tuesday. Iranian media said the meeting took place in Tehran and the two sides were considering new energy agreements.

Iranian newspapers widely covered the Geneva talks and the IRGC exercises with none appearing to project that Iran and the US may have a credible pathway leading to an agreement in the foreseeable future.

“Power from Geneva to the Strait of Hormuz,” read the headline from the Tehran Municipality’s Hamshahri morning daily while reformist Shargh wrote, “Iran is not Venezuela.”

The conservative Farhikhtegan claimed that Iranian negotiators were in Geneva with “full hands” as they offered “initiatives” to advance the talks. The hardline Vatan-e Emrooz wrote about “Trump’s fears” of a military reprisal from Iran in case of an attack and what it described as the “broken bloc” alliance between the US and the European Union.

MLB news: Tony Clark reportedly expected to resign as MLBPA executive director

Tony Clark, executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), was supposed to be at the forefront of an intense labor battle this offseason with MLB. Instead, he reportedly is expected to resign.

Clark’s reported resignation comes as he and the union are under federal investigation by the Eastern District of New York for alleged financial improprieties. The 53-year-old was being investigated regarding the use of licensing money or equity to enrich themselves, according to multiple reports.

Fox News Digital reached out to the MLBPA for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Clark and the MLBPA were supposed to embark on their annual tour of spring training camps on Tuesday, beginning with the Cleveland Guardians, according to The Athletic. However, in the wake of the report, the meeting was canceled.

Clark’s expected resignation occurs just months away from CBA negotiations between the MLB and MLBPA.

The owners are widely expected to lock out the players at the beginning of the offseason and push hard for the implementation of a salary cap. If the owners do indeed go forth with a lockout, it would be the second consecutive time the owners have locked out the players at the expiration of the CBA.

In 2021, the sport was shut down for 99 days. Over the past four seasons, as spending from teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets has reached extraordinary levels, there has been a fervent push for a salary cap to be implemented, making fans wonder if a lockout would threaten the entire 2027 season.

Historically, the MLBPA has been staunchly opposed to a salary cap.

In 1994, the Union’s refusal to budge on the implementation of a cap caused the World Series to be canceled that season, as the players went on strike midseason.

The MLBPA has not yet named a replacement for Clark.

Palo Alto Networks to acquire Koi for agentic AI security offerings

0

Palo Alto Networks announced Tuesday its plans to buy security startup Koi, a deal aimed at addressing the security risks emerging as organizations rapidly adopt agentic AI.

Terms were not disclosed, but Israeli business outlet Globes reported that Palo Alto will pay approximately $400 million. The deal is another among a trend of larger cybersecurity industry companies buying AI-focused security startups.

In a statement announcing the agreement, Palo Alto Networks argues that “agentic” tools are reshaping endpoint risk because they can act with broad privileges, interact with multiple systems and move data in ways that older security products were not designed to monitor. For years, endpoint protection emphasized detecting malicious files and stopping known malware techniques. The new concern described in the announcement centers on legitimate software that can become dangerous through compromise, misconfiguration or abuse. AI agents, in this framing, resemble highly capable insiders: they operate using a user’s credentials, can take actions on a user’s behalf and may do so automatically and at speed.

AI agents and tools are the ultimate insiders,” said Lee Klarich, Palo Alto’s chief product & technology officer. “They have full access to your systems and data, but operate entirely outside the view of traditional security controls. By acquiring Koi, we will be closing this gap and setting a new standard for endpoint security. We will give our customers the visibility and control required to safely harness the power of AI — ensuring that every agent, plugin, and script is governed, verified, and secure.”

Palo Alto Networks says Koi’s technology would be integrated into its Prisma AIRS AI security platform and would enhance the company’s Cortex XDR endpoint product. The stated goal is better visibility into AI-driven activity on endpoints and additional controls over tools that fall outside conventional security monitoring.

Palo Alto Networks and Koi describe their approach moving forward as “Agentic Endpoint Security,” built around visibility into AI-related software, continuous risk analysis and real-time policy enforcement. The language suggests an attempt to define a new product category at a moment when enterprises are still deciding how to govern AI tools that are proliferating through developer workflows and everyday office software.

The proposed acquisition also signals how major security vendors may respond to enterprise AI adoption: by packaging agent governance, monitoring and control into endpoint and cloud security portfolios, and by treating AI-driven automation as a distinct source of risk rather than a feature layered onto existing defenses.

The acquisition is the second AI-focused deal for Palo Alto in the plast six months. In November, the company announced it was acquiring Chronosphere, an AI-focused observability firm, for $3.35 billion.

‘Violent’ prisoner due for deportation escapes custody for second time in a week | UK News

0

A “violent” prisoner with gang affiliations who is due for deportation is on the run for the second time in a week, Sky News understands.

Police are hunting for Daniel Boakye after he escaped from police custody in a hospital in Lewisham, south London.

Boakye, 21, had been serving time at HMP Feltham for robbery charges. He is understood to be violent, has gang connections, and is due for deportation to Ghana.

He had already gone missing after freeing himself from prison custody at West Middlesex University Hospital in the early hours of 10 February.

The prison service said at the time they were “urgently” working with the Metropolitan Police, and were investigating how he was able to escape from hospital.

Officers located him at an address in Thamesmead, southeast London, on Wednesday afternoon.

On Sunday, Boakye again absconded from policy custody, this time at Lewisham Hospital, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

“Officers gave chase, but could not detail Boakye before he left the building,” a Metropolitan Police spokesperson told Sky News.

“He is 21 years old, black, of medium height and slim build. He was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, and a dark Nike jacket, when he absconded.”

Progressive panelists clash over AOC’s viral Taiwan comments

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Progressive panelists clashed over their response to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez‘s viral foreign policy comments after one attempted to defend the “Squad” member on Monday.

YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen and “The Young Turks” commentator Ana Kasparian joined a panel on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” where they discussed Ocasio-Cortez struggling to answer whether the U.S. should commit to sending troops to defend Taiwan.

“Um, you know, I think that this is such a, you know, I think that this is a um — this is, of course, a, um, very long-standing, um, policy of the United States,” she stammered before answering the question.

Though both conservative and liberal commentators have criticized Ocasio-Cortez’s comments, Cohen called the backlash “super unfair” considering the topic.

“I think what she’s basically being asked here is if the U.S. should, like, engage in what may be tantamount to a war with the other biggest global superpower on Earth,” Cohen said. “And like, that’s not an easy question.”

“I actually think, yeah, she stammered in the beginning, and God knows that we’ve all stammered in the beginning of difficult questions,” he continued. “But I think that her answer was that we need to engage in diplomacy so that it doesn’t get to that point is a perfectly acceptable answer and frankly, a much better answer than Donald Trump saying, ‘No, we do need to like, annex Greenland or bomb Cuba or take over the Panama Canal.’”

Cohen repeated that he would “a thousand times out of a thousand” accept Ocasio-Cortez’s response over President Donald Trump’s “era of imperialism.”

“I think that’s a false choice, and you know that,” Kasparian interrupted. “I think we need to have higher standards for Democrats.”

Although Kasparian said she agreed with Cohen’s criticism of the Trump administration’s foreign policy, she argued that it was not an excuse to ignore the flaws in Democratic candidates.

“In regard to Democratic candidates, we have to stop providing cover for their mediocrity. That answer was terrible and you know it. So don’t provide cover for it,” Kasparian said.

“So tell me what you think would have been a more acceptable answer,” Cohen asked.

“A sensible answer would have been exactly what you said, which you claim she said, but she didn’t say that. You read that from her statements, but her statement was more than just clamoring. It was just a bunch of word salad nonsense because she’s not an expert on foreign policy. This is a weak spot for her,” Kasparian said.

She continued, “So this is an area where she should have done a lot more homework before deciding to speak at the Munich Security Conference as she did at this panel. She didn’t know what she was talking about. She was blindsided by the question, and it doesn’t look good. Let’s just be honest about it rather than providing cover for it.”

Several moderate and liberal commentators have admitted that Ocasio-Cortez’s comments were “not great,” with some going as far as to call them “one of the bigger mistakes” of her career.

Talking to The New York Times about the reaction to the trip, Ocasio-Cortez said she went to Munich “not because I’m running for president, not because I’ve made some kind of decision about a horse race or a candidacy, but because we need to sound the alarm bells that a lot of those folks in nicely pressed suits in that room will not be there much longer if we do not do something about the runaway inequality that is fueling far-right populist movements.”

Kunal Kamra appeared in the controversial comment case on Eknath Shinde, ‘I believe in the Constitution’

0

Comedian Kunal Kamra and Shiv Sena leader Sushma Andhare appeared before the Privileges Committee of the Maharashtra Legislature in the matter of singing a satirical song on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. However, due to the absence of the original complainant, BJP leader Praveen Darekar, the next hearing of the case will now be held on March 10. This information was given by committee chairman Prasad Lad.

Praveen Darekar had presented the proposal

Praveen Darekar had presented a breach of privilege motion against both of them. Due to this proposal, Kunal Kamra came to Mumbai after about a year and appeared before the committee. Sushma Andhare was also present at that time. But the original complainant Praveen Darekar could not attend due to some reason. Therefore, now the next hearing will be held on March 10. On that day the complainant and the accused party will record their statements face to face.

What did Kunal Kamra say?

After the hearing, Kunal Kamra said, “I believe in the Constitution. Today I appeared before the Privileges Committee, but the hearing did not take place. I will be present on the next date also. I will answer the allegations leveled against me at the same time.” During this time he had arrived wearing a T-shirt with ‘The Constitution of India’ written on it.

Accused of making the word ‘traitor’ an issue – Sushma Andhare

Sushma Andhare said that the related studio was vandalized after Kamra read the poem. He said, “We have sought information about the allegations leveled against us. First, the statement of the original complainant Praveen Darekar should be recorded, only then we will present our views. Why our views were not heard today, the committee will answer.”

Andhare alleged that Eknath Shinde BJP did not bring the privilege motion itself, but BJP leaders brought it so that the word ‘traitor’ comes up again and again in the House and remains in people’s attention. He also raised the question that Kunal Kamra had Narendra Modi But he has written poems many times, then why did the BJP leaders not object at that time?

Next hearing on March 10

Committee Chairman Prasad Lad said that the statements of Kunal Kamra and Sushma Andhare were to be recorded today, but due to the absence of the original complainant, this was not done under the legal provisions. Now on March 10, Praveen Darekar’s statement will be recorded in front of Kamra and Andhare, and Kamra and Andhare’s side will also be recorded in front of them.

Gotta watch ‘em all? Pokémon-style app for birdwatching launches | Birdwatching

0

A new app has launched that aims to gamify birdwatching by allowing people to collect digital cards of UK bird species whenever they record seeing one.

Users of Birdex accumulate points for each bird they see, with less common and rare species yielding the greatest rewards. It is possible to add friends and compete over bird sightings. The app has got birdwatchers talking online – though it has raised hackles among some for its use of AI-generated artwork.

“Birds are great,” said Harry Scott, 24, one of the developers behind the app, who works in marketing. He and a collaborator built the app as a side project over a period of six months and he said the idea was to layer a rewards-based experience over birdwatching with a view to engaging young people in nature

“I think birdwatching and Pokémon do share a lot of similarities,” he added. But does using a smartphone to tot up bird sightings not mean screens getting in the way of nature? “I think it’s more about using technology … as a tool to learn,” he said. “We’re trying to make sure that that screen time [people are] having is a lot more positive.”

One Birdex user, Michelle Williams, a psychologist in London, said she enjoyed using the app to record garden birds such as robins with her two children aged seven and eight. “This is an opportunity to get out and help them engage with nature,” she said. “There is something nice about collecting a set, isn’t there?”

However, some have criticised the app’s developers for using AI to generate depictions of birds. “If the art is AI it’s an instant uninstall, sorry,” wrote one Reddit user.

Scott said they used AI in various ways during development because they had limited funds but they plan to hire artists in the future. The app is currently free to use, though some content or features may eventually be paywalled.

To date, users of Birdex have counted appearances of more than 200,000 birds. There could be a citizen science impact if those records are made available to bodies such as the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), said Viola Ross-Smith, a science communications manager at the trust. The BTO has its own app, BirdTrack, for recording bird sightings.

Ross-Smith said Birdex was “pretty engaging” and her son, a fan of Pokémon, “thought it looked quite cool”. But she questioned whether it might come with some risks for birds if people were encouraged to seek out vulnerable species such as the capercaillie, a rare, large woodland grouse that lives in parts of Scotland.

It is illegal to disturb capercaillies during their nesting season and visitors to the Cairngorms have frequently been warned not to go looking for them. Ross-Smith suggested Birdex could include such warnings.
