Freedom from pollution: The holy stream of Ganga became suitable for bathing due to UP model, purification became possible through Namami Gange campaign – The Holy Stream Of Ganga Became Suitable For Bathing Due To Up Model.

0

Ganga, which has been suffering from pollution for decades, is now writing a new story in Uttar Pradesh. Due to the huge investment made under the Namami Gange campaign and the coordination of modern technology, the main stream of Ganga has now become completely fit for bathing. The latest report of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has put a scientific seal on this historic reform.

According to the report, till 2018, a large part from Kannauj to Varanasi was placed in the dangerously polluted category called Priority-Four. Today that entire strip has been cleared. Now pollution has been limited to only three very small parts of Farrukhabad, Dalmau and Mirzapur, which have been kept in the category of least pollution (Priority-5).
  • The challenge was big as the flow of Ganga is longest in Uttar Pradesh. To deal with this, Rs 16,201 crore was sanctioned. Of the 80 projects in the state, 53 have been completed, leaving 1,520 MLD treatment capacity operational.
  • Sewage treatment plants in 11 big cities like Varanasi, Kanpur and Prayagraj are working in mission mode.
  • In Varanasi and Agra alone, the dirty water of millions of citizens is being treated, which has stopped the waste falling directly into the Ganga.

resolution of zero pollution
The next target is to take Ganga to zero pollution level. An action plan is also ready for the remaining three small parts. According to NMCG Deputy Director General Nalin Kumar Srivastava, the improvement in BOD standards proves that there has been real and scientific improvement in the water quality of the Ganga after decades.

There will be 3D mapping of Ganga from Ballia to Farakka
National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has launched a big plan for the management of river Ganga. Under this, aerial lidar survey and 3D mapping of the Ganga corridor from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh to Farakka in West Bengal will be conducted. The project, launched under the Namami Gange programme, will cover the stretches of the river passing through UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

A 3D digital twin of the river will be created using state-of-the-art geospatial technology. It will use manned aircraft, drones and photogrammetry. Its purpose is to accurately identify drain outlets, confluence points and flood areas.

New Ebola outbreak in Congo kills 65 as officials investigate virus strain

Africa’s top public health agency confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in Congo on Friday after 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases were recorded in the country’s remote Ituri province.

Health officials are now investigating whether the outbreak involves the Ebola Zaire strain — the deadliest and most well-known version of the virus — or a different variant, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Neighboring Uganda also confirmed one Ebola-related death involving a Congolese man whose case officials said was imported from Congo.

The outbreak has been concentrated in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones in eastern Congo, an area near the borders of Uganda and South Sudan that officials warned could become a regional transmission risk because of mining-related travel, weak infrastructure and ongoing insecurity.

Ebola is a highly contagious and often fatal disease spread through bodily fluids including blood, vomit and semen. Symptoms can include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and internal bleeding.

The Africa CDC said only four of the deaths have so far been laboratory confirmed, while testing and sequencing efforts continue to determine the exact strain involved in the outbreak.

Initial tests suggested the outbreak may not involve the Ebola Zaire strain, which was responsible for Congo’s devastating 2018-2020 epidemic that killed more than 1,000 people.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said it sent a response team to the region last week to help local officials investigate the outbreak and collect samples.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Congo has a “strong track record” responding to Ebola outbreaks and announced the agency is releasing $500,000 in emergency funding to support containment efforts.

Health authorities said Congo has stockpiles of Ebola treatments and approximately 2,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, though officials cautioned the vaccine is only effective against the Ebola Zaire strain and not against Sudan or Bundibugyo variants.

US plan for Colorado River could cut up to 40% supply for Arizona, California and Nevada | West Coast

0

The US government has proposed a plan for the drought stricken Colorado River that could cut up to 40% of current supplies to Arizona, California and Nevada, as the waterway’s reservoirs continue to plunge to critically low levels.

A top Arizona water official shared details of the Trump administration’s plan at a state meeting on Wednesday.

Under the 10-year plan, which will be finalized in June, the annual amount of water delivered to Arizona, California and Nevada could be slashed by up to 3m acre-feet, according to Tom Buschatzke, director of the Arizona department of water resources. The reductions would be evaluated every two years.

Three million acre-feet of water is enough to supply 6 million to 9 million households for one year, more than the number of homes in Arizona and Nevada.

Buschatzke said the federal plan would be either implemented under existing Colorado River law or through agreements among the states. He said federal officials had indicated that water cuts across the three lower-basin states would be based on the “priority of the law of the river”. That law, the 1922 Colorado River Compact, gives California the highest priority for water use.

Buschatzke described the proposed federal cuts as “sobering”.

“That’s us, that’s Arizona, and potentially CAP going to zero,” said Buschatzke, referring to water flows on the Central Arizona Project, a canal that transports Colorado River water to central and southern Arizona.

The Colorado river supplies water to some 40 million people in the American west. The plan comes months after the seven states that depend on the river’s dwindling supply missed a February federal deadline to agree upon how water cuts would be divided. The river has lost about 27.8m acre-feet of groundwater in the last 20 years, largely owing to overuse. A record snow drought this year further exacerbated the issue.

The river’s upper basin states, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico, have been resistant to water reductions. The states maintain that those downstream, California, Arizona and Nevada bear responsibility for the water’s shortages and thus should carry the burden of cuts.

Doug Burgum, the US interior secretary, indicated earlier this year that the US Bureau of Reclamation would step in to manage the protracted dispute.

Two weeks ago, California, Arizona and Nevada announced their own proposal for voluntary water reductions up to 3.25m acre-feet through 2028. Under their offer, Arizona’s water flow would be slashed by 760 acre-feet, California by 440 acre-feet and Nevada by 50 acre-feet.

However, it’s unclear if the states’ plan will go ahead, and it would still require cooperation from state water agencies and the federal government. Alex Smith, an employee with the US Bureau of Reclamation’s Phoenix office, told AZ Central the agency is evaluating the risks and benefits of the lower basin states’ plan.

During public comment on Wednesday, Patrick Adams, senior water policy adviser to Katie Hobb, the Arizona governor, said “things are moving very quickly”, referring to the federal government’s proposal.

“The risk of 3m acre-feet of reductions only in the lower basin is something that’s quite alarming to us. So we need to grapple with that,” he said.
