Former Washington governor rips state Democrats over ‘highest’ taxes

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Former Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire attacked her fellow Democrats in the Washington state legislature after the state’s recent millionaires’ tax.

While attending the Association of Washington Business 2026 Spring Summit on May 6, Gregoire, who served as Washington’s governor from 2005 to 2013, was asked whether she believes the state legislature understands the impact of its economic policies.

“No, I really don’t, as evidence by, you mentioned the estate tax,” Gregoire said. “I argued with some folks about the estate tax. We were the highest in the country, tied with Hawaii at 20%. We went to 35%. We’re not just the highest. We’re beyond the highest.”

Though Washington’s estate tax was raised to 35%, a recent bill passed in April has since rolled back the rate to 20% after backlash.

“And I said now, you understand the consequences of this?” she continued. “Can I see your fiscal note? Because I’d like to help it. Because here’s what you can expect. Those people are not homeless. They will not pay. They’re leaving. When they leave, they stop paying capital gains. When they leave, they stop giving significantly to philanthropy, which would otherwise be necessary by government. So you understand, do you see the consequences of what you’re doing? And the answer is no.”

Gregoire also called out Democratic state House members for a lack of business experience in understanding the impact taxes have on small businesses.

“I would suggest to you, we don’t really have an income problem,” she said. “We have a spending problem, and we’re answering it by stacking one more tax, one more rule, one more regulation. And the one thing that the business community doesn’t need is that lack of predictability. That’s how businesses grow, that’s how they thrive. That’s not healthy for our business community at all.”

Fox News Digital reached out to the Washington state legislature and Democratic caucus for comment.

Pushed through by the Democratic majority during the 2026 session, the millionaires’ tax imposes a 9.9% tax on annual income exceeding $1 million for individuals or households. While the tax was signed in March 2026, it is not scheduled to take effect until Jan. 1, 2028, with the first payments due in 2029.

After the tax was passed, Starbucks, which originated in Seattle, announced that it would be moving 2,000 corporate jobs to a new regional headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee.

Zelenskyy vows response after Russian strike kills 24 in Kyiv | Russia-Ukraine war News

Ukraine’s air force says Thursday’s attack was part of the largest aerial assault since the war began.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says strikes targeting Russia’s oil industry and military production facilities are “entirely justified” after Moscow flattened an apartment block in Kyiv, killing at least 24 people.

On Friday, Zelenskyy warned that Russia’s attacks would not go unpunished, saying he had discussed long-range strikes with senior military, security and intelligence officials, as a day of mourning was observed in Kyiv following Thursday’s attack on a nine-storey apartment block in the capital’s Darnytskyi district.

Ukraine’s air force said the strike, which also killed three children, was part of Russia’s largest aerial assault on the country since the war began more than four years ago.

Zelenskyy added that he had also discussed what he described as Moscow’s attempts “to draw Belarus deeper into the war” with senior officials, and alleged that Russia was preparing strikes against more than 20 decision-making centres across Ukraine. He said his office and state residence were among the targets, alongside government buildings and military command posts.

Ukraine began responding on Friday to Russian strikes, launching a large-scale long-range drone attack targeting energy and military infrastructure across several Russian regions. At least four people, including a child, were killed in a drone strike in the city of Ryazan, according to the regional governor. Ukrainian drones also struck the local oil refinery, one of the largest in the country.

POW swap

Footage of tearful Ukrainian soldiers and jubilant Russian troops emerged on Friday after the two countries completed an exchange of 205 prisoners of war each.

The swap formed part of last week’s three-day ceasefire, brokered by United States President Donald Trump. Both sides are expected to exchange a total of 1,000 prisoners each.

The remains of those killed in battle were also exchanged, with Russia handing over 526 bodies in return for the remains of 41 of its soldiers.

Last weekend, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested the war was nearing its end. His comments were later echoed by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

Zelenskyy, however, dismissed Putin’s remarks, saying Moscow had no intention of ending the conflict. Trump, who made ending the war a key pledge during his 2024 election campaign, later said Thursday’s strike on the Ukrainian apartment block could delay peace efforts.

“It’s one that we’d like to see settled. Until last night, it was looking good, but they [the Ukrainians] took a big hit last night. So it’s gonna happen [the end of the war]. But it’s a shame,” Trump said.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers reportedly underwent a second surgery on his injured knee.

Nabers, 22, initially underwent surgery on his ACL and meniscus on Oct. 28. The second surgery on his knee was to remove scar tissue that was causing stiffness, according to The Athletic.

Nabers’ timeline isn’t expected to be impacted, as the second surgery took place weeks ago and was considered a cleanup, according to multiple reports.

The team is still hopeful that Nabers will play in the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 13.

Nabers tore his ACL and meniscus in his right knee on Sept. 28 during the Giants’ win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The win marked Jaxson Dart’s first career start, and the rookie quarterback didn’t even get to play a half with his top wide receiver due to the injury.

Nabers was on his way to a dominant sophomore season before the injury. In four games, he had 18 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns.

Trump departs China touting deals, but little clarity on Iran or Taiwan | News

0

United States President Donald Trump has departed China following a three-day trip, touting several broad trade deals but suggesting little progress on key issues related to Taiwan or the US-Israeli war in Iran.

Trump’s visit, the first of his second term, was filled with pomp and circumstance, including a greeting from waiving children and a military honour guard, a private tour of a secretive former imperial garden, and the Confucian 15th-century Temple of Heaven.

Recommended Stories

list of 3 itemsend of list

By the end, both sides characterised the visit as a success, even if their accounts of what was agreed to varied.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he and Xi discussed Taiwan, with China’s leader telling him he opposed independence for the self-governing island Beijing claims as its own.

“I heard him out. I didn’t make a comment,” Trump said. “I made no commitment either way.”

Shortly after greeting Trump on Thursday, Xi had called Taiwan the most “important issue in China-US relations”.

“If mishandled, the two nations could collide or even come into conflict, pushing the entire China-US relationship into a highly perilous situation,” Xi added.

Trump told reporters on Friday he had not made a decision on US arms sales to Taiwan, an issue with deep support within the US Congress that Beijing vehemently opposes.

The US does not have official ties with Taiwan, but has for years provided billions of dollars in military aid. It acknowledges, but does not endorse, Beijing’s territorial claim to the island.

US lawmakers have approved a massive new weapons sale to Taipei, which still requires Trump’s sign-off.

“I will make a determination,” Trump told reporters. “I’ll be making decisions. But, you know, I think the last thing we need right now is a war that’s 9,500 miles [15,289km] away.”

For its part, Taiwan’s foreign minister said on Friday that Taipei would seek to deepen ties with the US, citing increasing regional “risks”.

US-Israeli war in Iran

On Iran, Trump said he and Xi spoke at length about the US-Israeli war, and their shared desire for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened.

Some Trump administration officials have called on Beijing to use its leverage over Tehran to help break an ongoing deadlock in ceasefire negotiations, though the president downplayed the issue during the trip.

The White House announced little in the way of concrete progress upon Trump’s departure.

Trump told reporters on Air Force One he was not “asking for any favours” on Iran.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, speaking to reporters on Friday about Trump’s visit, also gave little indication that China’s approach to the conflict had changed.

“China encourages the US and Iran to continue resolving their differences and disputes, including the nuclear issue, through negotiations, and advocates the swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on the basis of maintaining a ceasefire,” he said.

Trade deals touted

Trump, who travelled with a delegation of top US business leaders, concluded his visit touting a series of “fantastic trade deals for both countries”.

In an interview with Fox News on Friday, he said that included China agreeing to buy 200 jets from US aviation manufacturer Boeing. Such a deal would mark the first purchase of US deals in more than a decade.

The White House has also said China could soon begin buying more US oil and farm goods.

But further details of any agreements were not immediately released, and China has been far more circumspect. No new agreements were mentioned in China’s official statement recapping the visit.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang on Friday said both sides agreed to establish a trade council and an investment council. He said they would continue discussions on tariff adjustments and agricultural market access.

Trump, meanwhile, gave no update on whether a trade war truce reached in October of last year, which saw Washington surge tariffs on China and Beijing, in turn, threaten to impose export controls on rare earth minerals, had been extended.

Trump said he and Xi “did not discuss tariffs”.

Pwn2Own Berlin

During the second day of Pwn2Own Berlin 2026, competitors collected $385,750 in cash awards after exploiting 15 unique zero-day vulnerabilities in multiple products, including Windows 11, Microsoft Exchange, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Workstations.

The Pwn2Own Berlin 2026 hacking competition takes place at the OffensiveCon conference from May 14 to May 16 and focuses on enterprise technologies and artificial intelligence.

Security researchers can earn over $1,000,000 in cash and prizes by hacking fully patched products in the web browser, enterprise applications, cloud-native/container environments, virtualization, local privilege escalation, servers, local inference, and LLM categories.

According to Pwn2Own’s rules, all targeted devices run the latest operating system versions, and all entries must compromise the target and demonstrate arbitrary code execution. Vendors have 90 days to patch their software and hardware after the zero-days are disclosed at Pwn2Own.

The highlight of the second day was Cheng-Da Tsai (also known as Orange Tsai) of DEVCORE Research Team earning $200,000 after chaining three bugs to gain remote code execution with SYSTEM privileges on Microsoft Exchange.

Siyeon Wi also collected $7,500 after exploiting an integer overflow bug to hack Windows 11, and Ben Koo of Team DDOS escalated privileges to root on Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Workstations to earn a $10,000 cash prize, while 0xDACA and Noam Trobishi used a use-after-free bug to exploit the NVIDIA Container Toolkit.

In the AI category, Le Duc Anh Vu of Viettel Cyber Security hacked the Cursor AI coding agent for $30,000, Sina Kheirkhah of Summoning Team demoed an OpenAI Codex zero-day ($20,000), and Compass Security exploited Cursor ($15,000).

Harvey Weinstein’s New York retrial ends in mistrial with jury deadlocked | Harvey Weinstein

0

Harvey Weinstein’s retrial in New York on a rape charge ended in a mistrial on Friday after the jury deadlocked in the closely watched criminal case that another jury had already failed to decide last year.

The disgraced former Hollywood mogul has been convicted of other sex crimes on the US east and west coasts and is already in jail. But Friday’s declaration of another mistrial leaves the New York rape charge in limbo after three trials.

A majority-male jury in Manhattan had been weighing whether Weinstein raped Jessica Mann, a hairstylist and actor. Weinstein’s lawyers argued that sexual encounter between them was consensual. It happened in 2013 during a fraught relationship between Weinstein, who was married at the time, and Mann, decades his junior.

The signs of stalemate emerged on Friday a few hours into the third day of deliberations. Jurors sent a note saying they “have concluded that they cannot reach” a unanimous verdict. Judge Curtis Farber initially instructed the group to continue deliberating.

An appeals court overturned his 2020 New York conviction on charges that involved Mann and another accuser. At a retrial last year, jury deliberations broke down amid infighting on Mann’s portion of the case, leading to this current retrial. Weinstein is charged with one count of rape in the third degree.

Mann, 40, has testified that she willingly had some sexual interludes with the movie producer, but that he subjected her to unwanted sex that day, after she repeatedly said no.

Weinstein’s lawyers have emphasized that Mann subsequently continued seeing Weinstein after the encounter and expressing warmth toward him. Mann has said she was mired in complicated feelings about him, herself and what had happened.

Her viewpoint changed in 2017, when a series of allegations against Weinstein propelled the #MeToo movement. Some of those accusations generated criminal convictions against Weinstein in New York and California.

Weinstein, 74, has said he “acted wrongly” but never assaulted anyone.

The current jury heard nearly three weeks of testimony, five days of it from Mann. Weinstein did not testify.

The Associated Press generally does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted. Mann, however, has agreed to be named.

Jinping gave this memorable gift while leaving after Trump’s ‘merciless insult’ in Beijing

0

US President Donald Trump left from Beijing on Friday (May 15, 2026) after completing his three-day visit to China. Chinese President Xi Jinping and his American counterpart donald trump described his talks as historic and important, although no agreement was reached on any controversial issue. Chinese President Xi Jinping honored him by paying him a visit to his very special and secure residence, Zhongnanhai.

Jinping took Trump to this special place

Jinping told them, ‘This is the place where the leaders of the central government of the Party of China work and live, including me.’ Describing this meeting as ‘amazing’, Trump said that this place had never been shown to any outsider before. However, Trump’s visit to China was not very smooth. On Thursday, reports of misbehavior with American journalists and officials came to light. However, the Trump administration has not yet responded to these reports.

Trump was insulted on the very first day in Beijing

Some analysts believe that Jinping did not come to receive Trump on the very first day, which is an insult to America. Trump landed in Beijing with a high-level US delegation, which included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Elon Musk and Tim Cook. Instead of Xi Jinping personally welcoming Trump at the airport, the US President was welcomed by China’s Vice President and other senior officials. Political commentator Brian Allen wrote on X, ‘A huge insult! Trump has just arrived in China. The White House is calling it the red carpet treatment.

Jinping gave this special gift to Trump

Meanwhile, social media users released old footage from 2018, which shows Xi Jinping personally greeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the airport during his visit to China. On the last day of Trump’s visit, Jinping gave him a tour of his residence. This very secret complex is often called the White House of China. During this tour, Trump was impressed by the huge roses there, after which Xi Jinping promised to gift the seeds of those roses for the ‘Rose Garden’ of the White House.

According to the minutes of the meeting of the two leaders released by the White House, the official residence and office of the US President, Trump invited Xi Jinping and his wife to the White House on September 24 and the two leaders agreed that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open to ensure the free flow of energy. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun avoided answering questions related to the details of the consensus reached between the two leaders on controversial issues.
