Trump says he doesn’t ‘think about Americans’ financial situation’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The speaker of the House is trying to rescue the President of the United States from a bad blunder.

Or, to put it in layman’s terms, “Cleanup on Aisle 3!”

In what can only be viewed by Democrats as a gift-wrapped present from the political gods — and which you will hear repeated thousands of times before November — Donald Trump appeared to blow off concerns about the financial struggles of his fellow citizens.

Mike Johnson began: “I don’t know the context in which he made that comment–”

Hold on. When a seasoned lawmaker begins that way — even though the offending words were said on camera and already blasted around the world — he is saying he doesn’t want to answer the question. He wants to immediately pivot to his spin.

TRUMP PROMISED LOWER COSTS; THE IRAN CONFLICT NOW THREATENS THAT PLEDGE

President Donald Trump speaking in the Oval Office of the White House

A quick recap for those living without electricity: Donald Trump, who spends more hours talking to journalists than any president in history, had committed a linguistic felony. He is usually immune to such missteps by reframing the question, which all pols have some basic ability to do.

Before he left for China, a reporter asked whether he was motivated to make a deal with Iran because of “Americans’ financial situations.”

“Not even a little bit,” Trump said — and he didn’t stop there.

“The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran — they can’t have a nuclear weapon. I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing — we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all.”

That’s where he stepped in it. Trump repeated the negative premise in a complete sound bite, rather than focusing solely on nukes.

The Johnson explanation:

“I can tell you the president thinks about Americans’ financial situations. I talk to him on average twice a day, sometimes three or four times a day, and we talk about it constantly. He is laser-focused on trying to resolve the conflict in Iran. Because if we get the Strait of Hormuz reopened, that will alleviate pressure on gas prices and other things in the economy.”

Message: He cares.

TRUMP TORCHES DEMS’ ‘FAKE AFFORDABILITY’ PITCH – BUT GOP PANIC IN DEEP RED STATE HINTS VOTERS AREN’T BUYING IT

U.S. President Donald Trump speaking at Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono Pennsylvania

Which is reminiscent of George H.W. Bush (who had a tendency to read his talking points) saying after winning the Persian Gulf War, in response to criticism that he was too focused on policy: “Message–I care.”

The Louisiana congressman did try to convey that message without contradicting what Trump had actually said.

Now you could argue that Trump was just being ham-handed, that he was trying to convey that nothing was more important to him than stopping the Iranians on the nuclear front.

But in recent weeks, the president has talked a great deal about his White House ballroom. He has said Barack Obama should be imprisoned over what happened in 2016. He has continued his retribution campaign against political enemies, especially James Comey, who he’s called a “dirty cop” and against whom he orchestrated the “seashell” indictment after a previous one was thrown out of court.

None of this broadcasts a message of affordability, especially with soaring prices on such items as beef, coffee and tomatoes.

MIKE JOHNSON SAYS HOUSE GOP WORKING FULL STEAM AHEAD ON TRUMP’S ‘AFFORDABILITY AGENDA’

In his comments the other day, Johnson turned to a favorite Trump punching bag. He said they were trying “to reverse the inflation of the Biden years that was at a 40-year high.”

Small problem. The annual inflation rate was just announced at 3.8 percent for April, eliciting gasps from some TV economists.

The president did draw support from an unexpected source: John Fetterman.

The Democratic senator told Fox News this his stance is rooted in his support for Israel and Trump being the first president to take on the terrorist state of Iran.

“I mean, he said  something that got clipped, saying, ‘I’m not thinking about American people financially.’ But what he really was saying, what he did say is like, ‘I am really thinking that we can’t ever let Iran building a bomb’.’

It didn’t get “clipped” by most media outlets. But I’m sure Trump appreciated Fetterman’s vote against invoking the War Powers Act, which would have required Hill approval before the war could continue–especially with three Republicans breaking ranks with their party.

No president can single-handedly turn around the economic ship of state. Even with Trump’s pick, Kevin Warsh, confirmed as Fed chairman, there’s no guarantee that interest rates will quickly be cut, despite a long lobbying campaign by the president.

And he certainly didn’t help himself with his ill-chosen words.

30,000 angry Red Sox fans send blunt message to owner during another embarrassing loss

It’s been two weeks since the Boston Red Sox fired Alex Cora and five other coaches in a desperate move to save a sinking ship, so let’s go ahead and check in on the club and see how much they’ve turned it around.

You ready? OK! Get your calculators out …

In the 16 games since Boston axed Cora, the team has turned into an absolute juggernaut, going … 8-8. That’s right. 8-8! They are just as mediocre now as they were weeks ago, which shouldn’t surprise anyone with eyeballs and half a brain.

ZERO BS. JUST DAKICH. TAKE THE DON’T @ ME PODCAST ON THE ROAD. DOWNLOAD NOW!

I’ve said for months now that this team is awful. I’ve ripped them, mocked them and begged the owner to sell the team. And I’ve had angry fans email me calling me all sorts of names because I was too mean and nasty to their beloved Red Sox.

Well, they’ve gone 8-8 since Cora’s firing, and stink just as bad today as they did two weeks ago. The latest embarrassment came in Thursday’s loss to Philadelphia, when Trevor Story (awful) made another horrendous error late in the game that led to the third and final run of the inning for the Phillies.

TREVOR STORY QUESTIONS RED SOX’S DIRECTION AFTER FIRING MANAGER ALEX CORA, FIVE COACHES: ‘UP IN THE AIR’

Fans, rightfully so, were furious, and they let owner John Henry hear about it from his cozy suite overlooking Fenway Park:

Red Sox fans are fed up, but it’s not enough

It’s just so pathetic. The organization is so cooked. Anyone who thought firing Alex Cora was going to fix a thing is just insane. I had one reader actually email me and tell me it was a blessing because now the minor league guys were going to come in and save the day. Seriously.

Nobody is saving the day, folks. Not until John Henry listens to the fans and sells the team. That’s the reality of the Red Sox right now. The experiment has failed. It’s all just failed.

They tried to become the Rays when they traded Mookie Betts six years ago. They wanted to focus on the farm system and saving money. They didn’t want to pay big taxes anymore for spending too much money.

And it’s completely crashed and burned. All of it. They’ve finished near or at the bottom of the AL East in all but two seasons since 2020, and one of those (2021) was a fluke. They’re headed that way again this season, by the way.

They traded guys like Rafael Devers and Mookie Betts. They watched cornerstones like Xander Bogaerts walk in free agency. They refused to engage with Alex Bregman last year when he wanted to talk about an extension.

Now, Bregman and the Cubs are 28-16 while the Red Sox are 18-25 and his “replacement,” Caleb Durbin, might be the worst player I’ve ever seen wear a Red Sox uniform.

Roman Anthony, the top prospect in baseball last season, is hurt right now. Before he got hurt, he was awful. Truly dreadful. The regression has been shocking.

Jarren Duran, who fans BEGGED Craig Breslow to trade last offseason, hasn’t hit since 2024. He’s currently hitting .178 and part of a logjam in the outfield because the GM refused to deal any of them last winter.

Trevor Story is hitting .206 with 57 (!!!) strikeouts this season. That’s tied for eighth-most in all of baseball. He’s committed the fourth-most errors (5) out of all qualified shortstops. This was supposed to be the team “leader” after they sent Bregman packing. Nice work.

I could go on and on. Believe me. For now, though, the fans did all the talking last night at Fenway. Sadly, it won’t be enough.

The next step? Stop showing up altogether.

Hit Henry where it hurts the most. That’s the only option. Chants are cute, but they fall on deaf ears while you hold a $15 Michelob Ultra.

Should be a fun summer at Fenway!

Decision to reduce petrol and diesel consumption in 899 gram panchayats of this district of UP, created history

0

Yogi government’s environmental protection and public awareness mission has reached new heights. On Friday, history was created by all 899 gram panchayats organizing Green Chaupal together in Ambedkar Nagar district. In this program which lasted from 9 to 10 am, comprehensive proposals for reducing petrol and diesel consumption, promoting green transportation and environmental protection were passed. This collective effort of Ambedkar Nagar has become an inspiring example for the entire state.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath In this program organized in the context of the call, a resolution was taken to take fuel and energy saving, environmental protection and cleanliness campaigns to every village. Under the direction of District Magistrate Isha Priya, village heads played an active role in this event. A large number of local people participated in the Green Chaupal organized at the same time in all the Panchayats. The village heads took the initiative to reduce the consumption of petrol and diesel and took a collective pledge to promote public transport, car pooling, use of electric vehicles and green transport system. During this, topics like plantation, water conservation, cow conservation, cleanliness, organic farming, solar energy, non-burning of stubble and waste management were discussed in detail. In view of the monsoon, an action plan was also made to complete pre-plantation preparations by June 30.

The District Magistrate said that through this event the district has established two important records. First, to organize the event simultaneously by maximum Gram Panchayats at one time. Second, organizing such a huge awareness program in the shortest possible time. In the upcoming Green Chaupals organized in all Gram Panchayats, during the upcoming plantation festival, every family was asked to plant at least five saplings and ensure their care. Apart from this, consent was also given to run awareness campaigns for water conservation, cow conservation, cleanliness, green and organic farming, soil conservation, energy conservation, solar energy, environment and education.

The minister in charge appreciated the initiative
Praising this initiative, Minister in-charge Girish Chandra Yadav said that this innovative effort made by the district administration under the guidance of Yogi government will prove to be a milestone in the direction of environmental protection. It is commendable to spread the message of energy saving and green transportation to rural areas on the call of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister. The Minister appealed to the public that every citizen should take a pledge to reduce the consumption of petrol and diesel at the individual level and use the vehicle only as per requirement.

Men in the mirror: Trump and Xi’s suits put ‘chameleon effect’ to test in Beijing | Donald Trump

0

When Donald Trump and Xi Jinping met for a welcome ceremony in Tiananmen Square this week with the world’s gaze on them, they mirrored one another in strikingly similar suits.

Both were blue, single-breasted with flap pockets. Both had two buttons with only the top one done up. Both wore red ties.

They were surrounded by scores of other men in different suits: Stephen Miller had his customary pocket square, ditto Pete Hegseth, who along with Scott Bessent wore flamboyantly stripy ties; Elon Musk wore a green tie; there were blue shirts and black suits. Making their symmetry more visually striking.

Both leaders were hoping to secure geopolitical gains and trade deals – and matching suits, according to Enda Young, the founder and CEO of the Centre for Negotiation and Leadership and a negotiation lecturer at Oxford University, may have helped. “There’s good evidence from social psychology that people tend to warm more quickly to those who seem similar to them,” he says. “That can be behaviour, language, posture or even appearance and dress.”

In negotiation, he says, “mirroring often works at a subconscious level. Similar suits, colours or body language can signal alignment, shared status or mutual respect before anyone speaks.”

Young points to research on the “chameleon effect”, which “also shows that subtle mimicry tends to increase rapport and cooperation”, also citing the work of Robert Cialdini, the author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, and “his principle of ‘liking’ where similarity tends to increase trust and openness to influence”.

It’s not the first time political leaders have mirrored each other in high-stakes moments. When France’s Emmanuel Macron and Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spent three days in 2024 in the Amazon rainforest talking about ecological preservation and a global minimum tax rate for the world’s wealthiest, their “bromance” was viewed through the lens of their matching outfits (and hand-holding).

The opposite was perhaps in evidence when Volodymyr Zelenskyy was admonished for wearing a military-style black sweatshirt rather than a suit to the Oval Office for what became a disastrous exchange between the two leaders last year. When Zelenskyy returned months later, he was seen to be making a diplomatic concession when he wore a military-style “suit”.

Twinning can go wrong in other ways, such as when Liz Truss delivered her first speech as prime minister at the Conservative party conference wearing a dress that appeared identical to that of a fictional dictator.

For mirroring, “the important caveat is that it only really works when it feels natural. If it looks staged or too deliberate, people tend to react against it,” says Young.

Important, then, that the look was not a departure for either president. While Trump’s look rarely strays from the one he wore for this occasion, Xi’s wardrobe has more diversity, including a low-key windbreaker, as well as the more traditional Mao suit, which Xi wore last year during a military parade in Beijing in the company of Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un.

After initial talks, perhaps the wardrobe mirroring was working, as Xi said: “Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals.” By day two, with no clear resolutions yet announced, the men were, according to Trump, “true friends”, but they were no longer mirroring; Xi remained dressed and styled the same, but Trump’s jacket lay open, a striped blue tie dangling underneath.
