Chinese security officials allegedly blocked an armed U.S. Secret Service agent from entering an event on Thursday during President Donald Trump’s visit to the country, according to media members on the ground.

A Secret Service agent was reportedly blocked from entering Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Beijing’s Temple of Heaven with their weapon on Thursday, according to reporters. The incident triggered an alleged “intense standoff” that delayed entry to the venue for over a half-hour due to heated discussions.

“We’ve seen several intense confrontations since being here,” wrote a Telegraph correspondent on X of the situation.

“Several times the Chinese tried to stop US reporters and staff from leaving their positions and joining the motorcade,” the Telegraph correspondent on X.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Secret Service for comment on Thursday.

This is not the first time tensions have flared between the Secret Service and Chinese security officials.

Iraq’s parliament approves new Ali al-Zaidi government | Government News

PM sworn in and 14 ministers approved in new government though parliament fails to reach consensus on several posts.

Iraq’s new Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has been sworn in with only a partial cabinet after lawmakers failed to reach a consensus on key postings, including interior and defence.

The prime minister and other ministers who secured parliamentary confidence took the constitutional oath of office on Thursday, according to the official Iraqi News Agency (INA), formally assuming their duties.

“The Council of Representatives votes to grant confidence to the government of Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi and its ministerial programme,” the prime minister’s media office said.

In Iraq, a government wins a confidence vote when parliament approves half plus one of its ministries.

Al-Zaidi’s government should include 23 ministers, but its lineup remains incomplete as key political parties continue to negotiate several portfolios.

Parliament approved 14 ministers during the session, but failed to reach consensus on several remaining posts, including the interior and defence portfolios.

Basim Mohammed was ‌appointed as the country’s new oil minister while Fuad Hussein was kept on as the foreign minister in the new government, lawmakers told the Reuters news agency.

Al-Zaidi presented his government programme during the parliament session – which was not broadcast live – but has yet to announce it publicly.

Youngest prime minister

Al-Zaidi, Iraq’s youngest prime minister at the age of 40, was chosen to form the new government on April 27 after President Nizar Amedi named him prime minister-designate and tasked him with forming a government.

He will face major challenges, including disarming Iran-backed militias, tackling entrenched corruption, and balancing ties between Washington ‌and Tehran.

The selection of al-Zaidi broke a months-long deadlock in which United States President Donald Trump had intervened, after former two-time Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had emerged as the coalition’s initial candidate.

Al-Maliki, who is close to Iran, was fiercely opposed by Trump. The US president warned that all support to Iraq would stop if he became prime minister.

Unlike his predecessors, al-Zaidi has no history in political office or government administration. Born in the capital, Baghdad, to a prominent family originating in the southern province of Dhi Qar, he built his career in the private and academic sectors.

He holds bachelor’s degrees in law and finance, as well as a master’s degree in banking and finance, and is a member of the Iraqi Bar Association.

Analysts note that al-Zaidi’s lack of political history is his greatest asset. In a deeply polarised landscape, his “blank slate” makes him a palatable choice domestically and internationally.

Saving petroleum products is very important

He said that in the present times, saving petroleum products is very important and every citizen should play his role in this. The DM said that the Prime Minister has appealed to the countrymen to bring small positive changes in their daily lives. If people start walking instead of driving for short distances, it will not only save fuel but will also help in environmental protection.

DM enumerated the benefits of walking

Appealing to the people, he said that walking is very beneficial for adopting a healthy lifestyle. This keeps the body healthy and the environment also remains safe. The DM said that the efforts of the administration should not be limited to just giving orders but the officers themselves should set an example so that a positive message goes to the society.

The District Magistrate said that environmental protection and saving resources is not the work of any one person or department but is the responsibility of the entire society. Such campaigns can be successful only with public participation. He also appealed to the officers and employees to walk or use public transport wherever possible while commuting to office.

Even the health department was not left behind

At the same time, Chief Medical Officer of Barabanki, Dr. Awadhesh Yadav has instructed the departmental officers and employees to use more public transport and less use of government and private vehicles. He said that all the officers and employees of the district have been instructed to minimize the use of private and government vehicles and use public transport wherever possible.

Everyone should actively participate in this appeal.

Dr. Awadhesh Yadav said that he himself rarely uses the government vehicle and it is used only when there is absolutely necessary work. He said that this is not just a formal appeal but a matter related to national interest and everyone should participate in it enthusiastically.

The CMO said that the country is paramount and if by changing small habits one can contribute to the national interest, then every person should come forward for this. He asked the health department employees to spread this message among the general public also so that more and more people can become a part of this initiative.

This initiative of Barabanki administration has now become a topic of discussion and people are seeing it as a positive message. It is believed that in the coming time, more such campaigns can be run in the district regarding environmental protection and fuel saving.

OIlers axe head coach Kris Knoblauch in first move to show Connor McDavid they know business

We all got the sense it was coming, but it still seems shocking that after two straight Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2024 and 2025, the Edmonton Oilers have told head coach Kris Knoblauch his services are no longer needed.

Of course, this was kind of obvious amid reports that the Vegas Golden Knights were blocking the Oilers from talking to head coach Bruce Cassidy.

However, while it’s another move that underscores how short the leash NHL coaches have these days, it was necessary to show Oilers superstar Connor McDavid that the front office means business.

McDavid will start a new two-year “show me” deal in Edmonton, and they’ll realistically only have a year to prove to him that their Cup-winning window hasn’t slammed shut.

Step one was making an aggressive coaching decision.

Knoblauch goes way back with McDavid and was his head coach in juniors. When he joined the team partway through the 2023-24 season, he turned them around and led them to a Cup Final loss to the Florida Panthers.

Kris Knoblauch

The next season ended in another loss to Florida, while this season ended with a first-round loss to the Anaheim Ducks.

In years past, a coach like Knoblauch would’ve built up enough goodwill to at least get one more year to prove that he can get the team back to the Cup Final and win it all. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore, and teams are getting more aggressive with coaching decisions.

Of course, this can’t be the only thing that happens this summer because coaching was far from the Oilers’ biggest problem.

I’d say the biggest is what it has been through the entire McDavid era: depth.

ALL-TIME TALENT, ZERO TITLES: THE MOST UNDERACHIEVING FRANCHISES IN NORTH AMERICAN SPORTS

Sure, McDavid and Leon Draisaitl put up mega numbers upfront, while blueliner Evan Bouchard does the same on the backend.

But the drop-off after those three is wild.

Just this season, McDavid had 138 points (a league high), Draisaitl had 97, and Bouchard had 95.

The next highest on the team? Ryan Nugent Hopkins with 57.

They needed to spread out the scoring because, as great as it is to have Connor McDavid lighting things up, he’s only on the ice for 22 minutes a game. Others need to step up in the other 38.

But you can get away with this if the goalies are playing lights out… but they are not.

This season, their top netminder is Connor Ingraham with a .899 save percentage and a 2.60 GAA.

So, while getting rid of Knoblauch and potentially bringing in a Bruce Cassidy or a Craig Berube may be a shock to the system for the team, they need to make some moves this summer.

And, you can bet that No. 97 will be keeping an eye on it.

US border patrol chief resigns after claims of sex with prostitutes abroad | US news

0

Mike Banks, the border patrol chief who oversaw the most aggressive militarization of the US southern border in recent history, has resigned with immediate effect.

“It’s just time,” Banks told Fox News in an interview. “I feel like I got the ship back on course from the least secure, most disastrous, most chaotic border to the most secure border this country has ever seen.”

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Banks’ abrupt exit.

The resignation comes weeks after the Washington Examiner reported that six current and former border patrol employees had accused Banks of regularly paying for sex with prostitutes during trips to Colombia and Thailand over more than a decade, and bragging about it to colleagues.

The behavior was said to have been investigated twice by CBP officials, with one inquiry reportedly ending abruptly while former homeland security secretary, Kristi Noem, was in office.

CBP described the matter as “closed” last month, with a spokesperson telling the Examiner the allegations “date back more than a decade and were reviewed years ago”.

The agency did not immediately respond to the Guardian on Thursday when asked for comment on the allegations.

Banks took over as border patrol chief in early 2025 and swiftly became central to the Trump administration’s controversial drive to reshape US immigration enforcement. He oversaw a dramatic expansion of prosecutions for unlawful border crossings, intensified coordination between border patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the rollout of broader interior enforcement operations across the country.

Among that agenda was Banks’s role in launching so-called national defense areas along the southern border. Last April, under his watch, the administration designated large stretches of federal land as military zones and transferred jurisdiction to the US army. By mid-2025, the zones covered nearly a third of the entire US-Mexico border, and were patrolled by at least 7,600 troops.

In an interview with Newsmax last November, Banks said border patrol agents would “go anywhere in the United States” to apprehend undocumented immigrants, and said that border patrol was helping ICE in 25 cities, while “adding more cities every day”.

Kid Rock dismisses critics of military flights as ‘just noise’ in defense

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Musician Kid Rock responded to criticism of his recent flights with the U.S. military, saying his commitment to the U.S. Armed Forces is about boosting morale, not personal perks.

Rock, whose full name is Robert Ritchie, joined the “Will Cain Country” podcast to discuss the “noise” regarding his recent flights with the U.S. military and share the origin of his decades-long journey to support service members.

“It really started with the bombing of the USS Cole,” Rock said. “They were playing my music when that ship got towed out of the harbor and 17 sailors lost their lives. So, we ended up playing a show in Virginia and giving all that money to those families.”

The USS Cole was attacked by al Qaeda suicide bombers in 2000. Rock said his patriotism took a new form after meeting those sailors.

“That really started just a whole ‘nother level of not just patriotism, but really doing my part to try and help out and go wherever the military called,” he said.

Rock described his work supporting troops as some of the “toughest work” he’s ever done, but also the “most rewarding.”

Last month, the artist faced criticism after he joined Secretary of War Pete Hegseth for a helicopter flight in Washington, D.C. The flight came after the U.S. Army investigated an unplanned flyover at Rock’s Nashville home in March.

While some media outlets and social media users questioned whether taxpayer dollars were being used for celebrity flights, Rock dismissed the criticism as “just noise,” noting he has visited bases and flown in military aircraft for over 20 years.

“You do stuff for the military, and they want to showcase to you what they do. So, whether they’re showing you their technology or letting you shoot a gun or participate in something, you know, that’s kind of what you do,” he said.

“I don’t need to sit here and prove what I’ve done.”

Rock said the purpose of his recent trip with Hegseth was to film content for Memorial Day and the America 250 celebration. He also used the opportunity to announce that his “Freedom 250” tour will give away 250 free tickets per show to veterans and their families.

In a post on X, Secretary Hegseth defended the partnership, calling Rock a “patriot” and a “huge supporter of our troops.”

Clarence Carter, US soul star who had hits with Patches and more, dies aged 90 | Soul

0

Clarence Carter, the US soul singer who had numerous hits including the transatlantic 1970 smash Patches, has died aged 90.

His management company confirmed his death to the Guardian, saying he died on Wednesday following complications with pneumonia.

Carter was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1936, and was blind from birth. His music career began with the duo Clarence & Calvin, later the C & C Boys, who recorded a number of singles during the early 1960s. When his partner Calvin Scott, who was also blind, was injured in a car accident, Carter went solo and had his first R&B chart hit in 1967 with the self-penned Tell Daddy. It inspired Etta James to write a cover version and riposte, Tell Mama, which reached the US Top 30.

In 1968, he released arguably his most enduring track, Slip Away – now with more than 45m plays on Spotify. The mournful yet steadily strutting ballad, with Carter pleading with a woman to cheat on her partner with him, reached No 2 on the R&B chart and he crossed over in the US pop chart for the first time, reaching No 6. The song has since been used in numerous film soundtracks, including The Commitments, Almost Famous and Licorice Pizza.

That year also brought another hit song, Too Weak to Fight, and the ribald Back Door Santa – “I ain’t like old Saint Nick / He don’t come but once a year” – which has endured as an offbeat Christmas classic, and was sampled in another: Run DMC’s Christmas in Hollis.

1968 was also the year he met future soul music legend Candi Staton, who became one of his backing singers before they married in 1970. Staton later said she married him “because he was blind … I’d gotten so tired of my ex-husband accusing me, every man I looked at. I was in prison. So I got somebody who couldn’t see. And I had a wonderful time with him.”

Carter introduced her to producer Rick Hall of the Muscle Shoals studio, which helped to kickstart her solo career. Carter co-wrote songs for Staton – including the witty, Grammy-nominated I’d Rather Be an Old Man’s Sweetheart (Than a Young Man’s Fool) – which are regarded as classics from that era of soul music, and they had a son, Clarence Carter Jr.

But he was unfaithful, and Staton wrote bitter songs about his infidelity. “I was angry Clarence had done me so wrong chasing women,” she later said. “We could be walking down the street and they’d come and hug him. I sang them to get back at him.” Staton also told the Guardian that Carter “went to the IRS and told them I hadn’t paid taxes. I took an overdose, but I had a vision of my children’s faces. I threw it all back up and never tried that again.” They divorced in 1973.

In the interim, Carter’s R&B hits continued to stack up, culminating in Patches, his cover of the track by soul group the Chairman of the Board. Carter brilliantly told its social-realist story of a father who pleas to his son to press on through hardship, and his impassioned performance took the song to No 4 in the US and No 2 in the UK, his only UK Top 40 hit. His rendition won its songwriters, Ronald Dunbar and General Johnson, the 1971 Grammy award for best R&B song, while Carter himself was nominated for best R&B vocal performance (male).

“Music is my life and it has been good to me,” he told the NME amid his UK chart success. “Since I lost my sight, music has not only entertained me and earned me my livelihood, but it has been a tremendous comfort to me. When I’m down and feeling low, I just get out my guitar and sing.”

Carter remained a fixture in the US soul scene until the mid-1970s, when the genre was eclipsed by the rise of disco, and his success waned. He had a brief return to success – including the lower reaches of the UK charts – with his sexually explicit 1988 single Strokin’, and continued to release a steady stream of albums during the 1990s.

Film director William Friedkin was a fan of Strokin’, using it in his film Killer Joe. He described Carter as “the Mozart of Southern music”.
